Rolling Classic: 2018 Chevrolet Suburban

March 6, 2018 by admin 8 Comments

The Chevy Suburban hits all the right notes.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban
No US model matches the Chevrolet Suburban in longevity.

The Chevrolet Suburban makes an important claim to fame and it doesn’t have anything to do with its size. Yes, the Suburban is one of the largest passenger vehicles you can purchase, but what’s significant about this model is that it is the oldest model name of any US vehicle, its history dating to 1935.

The first “Carryall Suburban” was essentially a station wagon bolted to a truck frame. It was derived from a vehicle built for commercial purposes since 1933, then offered to the public under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. During the war years, civilian production ceased, but a military transit version continued. It wasn’t until 2000 when the GMC version was renamed the Yukon XL.

Today, the Suburban soldiers on, now in its eleventh generation. The shorter wheelbase version is known as the Chevy Tahoe, a vehicle reviewed by Auto Trends recently.

Three Trims: 2018 Chevrolet Suburban

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban is underpinned by the same platform supporting the full-size Chevrolet Silverado series pickup trucks. The 2018 Suburban comes in LS ($51,495), LT ($56,595) and Premier ($66,195) trims with standard rear- (4×2) and available four- (4×4) wheel drive available. Add $1,295 for the destination charge and another $3,000 for four-wheel drive.

2018 Chevrolet SuburbanAll models come with a 5.3-liter V8 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. New for 2018 is the RST Edition available on the LT and Premier models, two new exterior colors and standard LED daytime running lights across the model line. Two new dealer-installed options roll out: a Borla performance exhaust system and a six-piston Brembo front brake package.

My test model was a 2018 Chevy Suburban LT four-wheel drive. This model retails for $67,075, as it included several packages, including a Luxury Package ($2,860, with front fog lights, front and rear park assist, a power liftgate, power-fold second- and third-row seats, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, rear cross-traffic alert and other upgrades). Chevy also added a Midnight Edition ($2,285) Package with blacked out trim, recovery hooks, a two-speed transfer case, axle and towing enhancements and hill descent control.

Other features included a power sunroof ($995), second-row bucket seats ($795) and an audio system ($495). The final price for my test model dressed in black with a cocoa/dune interior came in at $67,075.

Exterior Highlights

2018 Chevrolet SuburbanWhere the earliest Suburbans were wagons set on truck frames, the current model finds a balance between truck and wagon. The expected long roofline, high beltline and slab sides are very much of the truck variety, but the front fascia and rear liftgate deliver a smoother, kinder look to this model.

Standard features include projector-beam headlamps, LED daytime running lights and tail lamps, black assist steps and 18-inch aluminum wheels. The trim parade adds such features as automatic high beams, fog lamps, power heated and folding side mirrors, 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, a programmable power liftgate and body-side molding. Power-retractable assist steps are a package option on the Premier.

Interior Highlights

Yes, the Suburban can seat as many as nine, particularly if you opt for three rows of bench seating. It is an option some people want, but the other choices include bucket seats up front and captains chairs in the middle row. With seating for seven, eight or nine, the Suburban has you covered.

2018 Chevrolet SuburbanRegardless of what your seating arrangement is, the Suburban’s cabin is as cavernous as they come with huge amounts of space throughout. If there is a penalty seat it would be the third row, but only for exceptionally tall passengers. Legroom is tightest back there, but even with a middle row bench seat you can take your shoes off and slip your feet underneath, getting comfortable the best way you know how. Otherwise, if you don’t need the rear seat it folds flat into the floor.

As you might guess, the 2018 Suburban comes well-equipped, going beyond keyless entry and push-button start to supply numerous amenities. You’ll find full power accessories, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cloth seats, three-zone climate control, floor and overhead consoles and rear compartment underfloor storage.

Options include a tilt and telescopic steering column, a heated steering wheel, leather seats, heated and cooled front seats, power front seats with lumbar support and heated outboard second-row seats.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban

Performance Matters

One thing that surprised me about the Chevrolet Suburban is that it offers one engine choice and a 5.3-liter V8 at that. That’s the same engine powering the shorter wheelbase Tahoe, but at least the Tahoe now offers GM’s largest V8 gas engine displacing at 6.2-liters as an option with the RST.

But don’t look at the smaller engine as some type of deficiency, it isn’t. This engine supplies efficiency as the engine cranks out 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque and also shuts down half the cylinders under certain drive and load conditions. Add it all up and the V8 delivers a class-leading 23 mpg on the highway.

The V8 pulls away from a dead stop with sufficient power, then ups its game when zooming down the highway entrance ramp or passing that big rig on the road. Steering is effortless and just as it should be with a big SUV. And if you’re smart, you won’t even attempt to carve corners — the Suburban is designed to bring you and up to eight additional passengers, all your gear and your trailer from point to point. Allow it to do what it does best and you’ll feel right at home with the Suburban.

Technology & Safety

Chevrolet receives high marks in all things tech. In fact, it may have the best standard tech features of any brand, bar none. I’m including luxury brands, GM’s Cadillac marque is no exception.

Certainly, Chevrolet offers such features that cost extra when offered by some luxury brands, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. OnStar, a proprietary GM telematics system is still relevant today, especially from a security perspective.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban

The Chevrolet entertainment package begins with a six-speaker audio system and adds OnStar 4G LTE and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot that supplies access for up to seven devices. Further, you get Chevrolet MyLink Radio with Bluetooth, satellite radio, a CD player, a 110-volt outlet, five USB ports and an auxiliary input jack. Some models include a nine-speaker Bose audio system or a 10-speaker Bose surround sound audio system.

Other upgrades include a rear-seat Blu-ray entertainment package with second- and third-row displays, four wireless headphones and two additional USB ports.

When it comes to safety technologies, the expected rearview camera is present. You’ll also find on some models lane keep assist with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, low speed forward automatic braking and a safety alert driver seat. All models supply “teen driver,” a feature that enables parents to keep tabs on the driving habits of their young drivers.

Parting Thoughts: 2018 Chevrolet Suburban

There is so much to dissect when examining the Suburban, but at least the trim levels are kept to a manageable three. We think most buyers will choose the four-wheel drive version for the simple reason that if they ever need to go off-road, they can and with their peace of mind intact.

The middle LT trim supplies a reasonable starting point for this big SUV, adding leather, upgraded technologies and other important amenities without busting budgets. Still, the Suburban LT with four-wheel drive will cost you about $60,000 and that’s without the packages my test model had. At least the list price is before the usual generous discounts kick in.

Big SUVs remain extremely important for GM, with Chevrolet selling approximately 56,000 Suburbans last year on top of nearly 99,000 Tahoes. Add in about 84,000 GMC Yukon/Yukon XL models and nearly 38,000 copies of the Cadillac Escalade, and you get a glimpse of a segment that remains strong. Chevrolet remains at the forefront of the segment, delivering more of the big SUVs than any other brand.

Chevrolet Cruze Adds Hatchback and Diesel Options for 2017

January 1, 2017 by admin 9 Comments

Chevy’s small car is big on efficiency.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan.
2017 Chevrolet Cruze Premier.

Car sales are getting clobbered in a market where SUVs and pickup truck growth continues to expand. Even as we finish yet another strong sales year, manufacturers are shifting production capacity away from cars in favor of the vehicle types consumers want.

Yet, brands such as Toyota, Ford, Hyundai, Honda, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Nissan, Kia, and Mazda are not retreating from segments that have long provided a logical entry point to each brand. Indeed, both subcompact and compact cars afford a sensible gateway for manufacturers, enticing consumers to buy new and, hopefully, win their continued allegiance for decades to come.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is a compact model, originally available as a sedan since its 2011 US release, but is now supplemented by a hatchback and will soon offer a diesel variant. Both changes could reverse a recent slide in sales, one that saw double-digit losses throughout the 2016 calendar year. Some of that drop can be attributed to a shift in customer tastes, while a case can also be made for customers opting for the midsize and vastly improved Malibu sedan.

Chevrolet offers the 2017 Cruze sedan in L ($17,850), LS ($19,400), LT ($21,025), and Premier ($24,350) grades. The hatchback is offered in just two grades: LT ($22,115) and Premier ($24,350). All L, LS, and LT models come with a six-speed manual transmission; add approximately $1,000 for the automatic (not offered with the L). Prices include a $875 destination charge.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan.

The Cruze LS offers a pair of packages — interior protection ($200) and ground effects ($1,495). Both LT grades offer a convenience package, an $850 upgrade. Add $230 for a chrome appearance package. Further, LT and Premier customers can choose an RS package ($695 in the LT and $995 in the Premier).

The Premier grade also offers an $865 enhanced convenience package (e.g., heated rear outboard seats, wireless charging for devices, a 110-volt outlet); a $1,995 sun and sound with navigation package (e.g., power sliding sunroof, 9-speaker Bose audio system, Chevrolet MyLink with navigation, and advanced instrumentation); and a $795 driver confidence package (e.g., automatic headlamps with high beam detection, rear park assist, forward collision alert, and other safety features).

Sedan and Hatchback Choices

So, which body style should you choose? To be fair, my review vehicle was the Premier sedan, so I can tell you only about that body style. That said, both models sit on a 106.3-inch wheelbase and that means there is ample room inside.

From bumper to bumper, the sedan measures 183.7 inches; the hatchback comes in at 175.3 inches. The sedan’s trunk measures upwards of 14.8 cubic feet, while the hatchback offers 24.7 cubic feet behind the rear seat or 47.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan

Exterior Highlights

The 2017 Cruze sedan offers a sleek appearance with a lower grille larger than that of the upper grille. Body sculpting is evident around the available fog lamps, across the hood, and along the profile. That profile features a rising belt line and standard steel wheels. Alloy wheels are available. To the rear, you’ll find wraparound combination lamps, additional sculpting, and diffuser-like trim.

Beyond the available alloy wheels, optional equipment includes a sport body kit, LED daytime running lamps, fog lamps, and a rear spoiler. All-season tires are standard across the model line. Wheel sizes range from 15 to 18 inches; machined wheels with high-gloss black pockets are now available — 18-inch size only. Other equipment available includes power-folding and heated side mirrors.

Interior Highlights

With 42 inches of legroom, the Cruze offers midsize cabin space up front. To the rear, you’ll find 36 inches of legroom, which is about average for the segment. This front-wheel drive model seats five, although it is best used by four.

Swoopy lines dominate the dashboard with the instrument panel composed of two large and two small analog displays along with a digital driver’s information center. Standard cloth seats give way to leather seats in the Premier. Standard equipment includes keyless entry, power windows and door locks, a tilt and telescopic steering column, and air conditioning.

Also available is push-button start, automatic climate control, cruise control, a rear center fold-down armrest with a pair of cup holders, dual reading lights, a remote vehicle starter system, a power driver’s seat, and heated seats. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated steering wheel, and illuminated visors are also available.

Tech and Audio Features

The Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system is standard across the Cruze line. The audio system is comprised of a seven-inch color touchscreen with Bluetooth music streaming and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

All models come with a USB port and OnStar with 4GT LTE Wi-Fi. Navigation and various audio packages comprised of four, six, and nine speakers are available.

Safety Highlights

On the safety front, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has conducted only partial tests thus far on the 2017 Cruze. The sedan achieved top scores of “good” in two categories: moderate overlap front and side. The IIHS also acknowledged the sedan’s available, but basic, front crash prevention system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has yet to rate the 2017 Cruze, but the federal agency awarded the similar 2016 model with its top five-star crash test rating. All models are equipped with 10 airbags, a rearview camera, and the usual stability and traction control technologies.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan

On the Road

As of this writing, there is only one engine choice with the 2017 Cruze: a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine. Making 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, this engine will be joined by a turbo diesel this spring.

The gas engine offers excellent fuel economy, delivering as high as 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway in some models. These numbers are at the upper end of the fuel economy range and are achieved with the six-speed automatic transmission. Stay with the standard six-speed manual gearbox and your model will make upwards of 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.

As for the diesel, it’ll displace at 1.6 liters compared with the 2.0-liter turbo-diesel offered earlier. This means that the new engine should better the previous four banger’s 44 mpg on the highway. No word about performance numbers, but we’re expecting some significant torque.

Even with the diesel, Chevrolet has ignored not just the performance side of the house, but consumers wanting something more than the base engine. While the base engine gets the job done, it is slow off the mark and just lacks the oomph customers may be expecting. A normally aspirated 2.0-liter gasoline engine or something slightly larger would be ideal, but Chevrolet isn’t offering it.

I give the Cruze high marks in several areas, including its quiet cabin, relatively smooth ride, and decent handling. There isn’t anything exciting about this car’s drive, but at least its stellar fuel economy and nicely laid out interior are strong attributes. Move away from the base “L” model and you’ll find a well-equipped little sedan or hatchback for your consideration.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan

Parting Thoughts

The Chevrolet Cruze checks off some of the boxes shoppers want, including value, efficiency, and technology. However, its weakest point is performance, with only one gasoline engine offered. In effect, Chevrolet has decided not to challenge the likes of the Ford Focus ST, Volkswagen Golf GTI, or the Subaru WRX by offering an SS variant with a more powerful engine paired with a short-throw manual gearbox and tied in with a sport suspension.

That said, two new features will only help make a case for the Cruze. Adding a hatchback enables Chevrolet to challenge the Focus as well as give customers an alternative to the Mazda3, Volkswagen Golf, and the Kia Forte5, among others. And by offering a diesel option this spring, Chevrolet fills a void left by Volkswagen when the German automaker had to pull its engine from the market following an emissions scandal of its own making.

All in all, the Chevrolet Cruze is light years ahead of every small Chevy offered previously. That fact alone makes the Cruze a model to put on your small car shopping list.

Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback Set for 2017 Debut

January 11, 2016 by admin 1 Comment

The second-generation Chevy Cruze sedan is out. Beginning this fall, a hatchback variant will finally be offered in the US market.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback
http://autotrends.org/images/chevrolet-cruze-hatchback-1701.jpg

It almost seems like eons have passed since the Chevrolet Cobalt and the earlier Cavalier represented the bow tie brand’s compact offering. Since 2011 it has been all Cruze, a far superior model to any previous small Chevrolet car.

The second-generation Cruze sedan is now in place and should help Chevrolet compete in a market dominated by the Toyota Corolla and Honda’s Civic. Other strong players include the Ford Focus, Nissan Sentra, Kia Forte, Volkswagen Golf, Mazda 3, and the Hyundai Elantra.

Detroit Auto Show Preview

In a segment with few hatchbacks, the Cruze has fit right in. However, Chevrolet sees market potential and will add a hatchback body style in time for the 2017 model year. That model was unwrapped days ahead of the start of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Here’s what we know about the Cruze hatchback:

1. From Europe, with love. The Cruze hatchback is not a new body style. Since the Cruze’s introduction the hatchback design has been sold in other markets, particularly in Europe, where it is nearly as popular as the sedan.

2. The sedan and hatchback are the same length between the wheels. Some manufacturers offer hatchbacks and sedans based on differing wheelbase lengths. Typically, the hatchback is shorter, but GM would have none of that. Instead, both body styles sit on a 106.3-inch wheelbase, providing generous rear seat legroom and 47.3 cubic feet of storage capacity when the rear seat is folded.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback

3. The design differences are subtle. From the front, the sedan and hatchback are alike. From the sides, the hatchback has a more rakish roof line. Each body style has a unique rear fascia.

4. Turbo is standard. One thing Chevrolet won’t do is have the two body styles share complete trim levels. Instead, the hatchback will be available in just two trims when it goes on sale in the fall — LT and Premier. Thus, all models will be powered by a 1.4-liter, turbocharged gasoline engine, the same one used in corresponding sedan versions.

5. Get your tech on. New cars continue to offer the latest technologies and the Cruze hatchback is no exception. The available 4G LTE Wi-Fi will allow for connectivity of up to seven devices. Furthermore, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support will be possible through the hatchback’s Chevrolet MyLink display.

6. And then there is safety. Like the sedan, the Cruze hatchback gets 10 standard airbags, including knee air bags up front. GM’s OnStar technology will also provide automatic notification in the event of an accident. You can also order up lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, side blind zone alert, and rear park assist. A Teen Driver feature is designed to promote safe driving by novice drivers.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback

Some Like it Hot

How important is the Chevrolet Cruze to GM? Since it rolled out in 2008, more than 3.5 million of them have been sold. Further, 35 percent of Cruze owners are new to Chevrolet, a product GM says has helped grow Chevrolet’s market share.

As for bringing the Cruze hatchback to the market, timing may be everything. Said Alan Batey, president, General Motors North America and Global Chevrolet.“With 9 percent market growth in small hatchbacks last year, it’s the perfect time to bring the Cruze Hatch to America.” It also corrects a decision made in GM’s pre-bankruptcy days to keep the hatchback out of the market, one that the company realizes was wrong.

If you’re in Detroit during the NAIAS, the Cruze hatchback and other Chevrolet products will be on display throughout out the show’s week-plus long run.

Driven: 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab LT 4×4

December 14, 2015 by admin 10 Comments

Now in its third model year, the current generation Chevrolet Silverado continues to ride the crest for pickup trucks, as its sales are up by nearly 14 percent year-do-date through November. This comes even as demand for the brand’s new Colorado midsize pickup truck draws additional attention to Chevrolet trucks, without siphoning sales from the nameplate’s best selling product line.

Even so, Chevrolet is taking nothing for granted as some of its Ford, Ram, Toyota and Nissan competitors introduce new or updated models for 2016. This year, Silverado shoppers will find a truck outfitted with numerous improvements, including a new front design featuring a more striking horizontal layout, fresh LED lighting and a sculpted hood. Indeed, the Silverado’s grille also varies from model to model, a practice gaining wider use, including in the Toyota Tundra.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab LT 4×4
2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab LT 4×4.

A 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab LT 4×4 was a recent test project, a vehicle that pushes the upper echelon of the light-duty, full-size pickup truck segment. This model offers you your choice of 4.3-liter, V-6; 5.3-liter, V-8; and 6.2-liter, V-8 gasoline engines. The first engine comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission; the second engine offers a 6- or 8-speed automatic; the top-of-the line engine is paired with the 8-speed standard automatic.

As tested, the smaller V-8 was the engine supplied — as with the other two choices, active fuel management is also present. AFM represents technology that shuts down four cylinders (two in the V-6) when operating the truck at constant speeds, such as on the highway. AFM does not kick in when the truck is called upon for heavier duty work, such as when trailering.

Just how much fuel saved isn’t quite clear, but with a fuel economy rating of 16 miles per gallon in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, this 4×4 doesn’t gulp gasoline as much as some models, although you’ll still pay handsomely at the pump thanks to its 26-gallon fuel tank. Fortunately, gasoline prices nearly everywhere (at publication) are below $2 per gallon across much of the country and is diminishing “pain at the pump” with it.

Crew cab models are where its at too and these trucks are not just for work crews. Regular cabs, though still available, have a small audience and are available in standard and long box layouts. So-called “double” or extended cabs provide a somewhat happy medium between regular and crew cabs, but legroom and back seat comfort is often lacking. Thus, crew cabs have become the de facto choice for families and businesses alike — the former because of the sedan-like room, the latter for squeezing in as many as six guys to handle the work.

Exterior changes, including a remote locking tailgate and standard LED tail lamps in the LTZ and the High Country editions, and power-articulating assist steps available in the High Country, were among the other updates made for the 2016 model year. Inside, the more notable changes have everything to do with technology, including phone integration with the Chevrolet MyLink telematics system for improved connectivity, which should lead to safer driving. That means both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, making it easier to make calls, acquire driving directions, and listen to music, without taking your eyes off the road.

CarPlay, integrated with Siri voice control, kicks in by pressing and holding the voice control button on the steering wheel. The system doesn’t override your ability to control the system by means of the touch screen or knobs, but it does supply a preferable way to connect without requiring your eyes to dart back and forth between the screen and the road ahead. That’s a win for mitigating distracted driving.

All models offer a center console color screen — a 7-inch display is available in the WT and is standard in the LS, while an 8-inch screen is found in the LT, LTZ and other upper trim level models. As before, Chevrolet MyLink works amidst OnStar 4G LTE with a Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling office-like connectivity wherever you go.

Quite easily, you could pay upwards of $50,000 for this pickup truck, topping $60,000 with a High Country edition outfitted with the larger V-8 engine, a rear-seat entertainment system, a high-end audio system, and a bedliner. Fortunately, deep discounts usually kick in, as Chevrolet truck dealers dispense such savings and probably with not much prompting to do so.

Crew cab seating pegs the comfort quotient with oversized and stuffed bucket seats up front, and a split-folding bench seat in the rear. The front seats are made for the big guys, coming in larger than seats found in your typical sedan. That means you ride in comfort, with enough back and hip support to chase stiffness away, especially after a long day in the mobile office.

I’ve always appreciated the cabin layout of the large trucks, with all controls sensibly placed and uncluttered. Six analog dials mark the instrument panel, supplying a traditional look along with the requisite digital driver’s information display. To the left of the steering wheel is the panel containing controls for trailering, 4×2 and 4×4 management, as well as front lighting. Along the center console you have the display screen as well as switches and knobs for managing the audio and climate control systems.

Storage space is generous and goes well beyond the in-door pockets with beverage holders and the large glove box. Between the front seats are the connection points — 12-volt, USB and auxiliary input port — along with a smartphone holder, an open storage area, two cup holders, and an oversized as well as a deep covered storage holder-cum-arm rest. Additional pockets are found on either side of the console divide as well.

Shift this pickup truck in gear and you’re ready to roll. Depending on the model selected and the trailering package installed, the Silverado 1500 can pull up to 6 tons. That’s 12,000 pounds of towing capacity for your work trailer or camper, reaching the peak of light-duty towing. Its also a number wholly sufficient for most people, although others will consider HD 2500 and HD 3500 in an effort to extend that reach, with gooseneck trailering also possible.

The Chevrolet Silverado shifts through all six forward gears seamlessly, quickly moving up to highway speeds or at least as fast as you might expect with three tons of mass at work. Maintain your speed with the accelerator or cruise control and take note of the instrument panel — the V8 readout will switch to V4 whenever minimal performance is needed, enabling this pickup to achieve its maximum efficiency. The second you need the extra power, full V-8 power is regained and you’ll hardly notice the difference.

Pickup trucks are prized for outstanding utility, superior performance and interior comfort. Where such models don’t shine is with its on-road characteristics, although electric power-assisted steering makes taking tight turns a relative non-issue. Improved braking and a better controlled ride are additional stand out features of the Silverado and for most competing trucks.

Take this 4×4 off road and you’ll enjoy its full capabilities. With or without the Z71 off-road package, the Silverado effortlessly transitions from an on-road maven to an off-road beast. With the Z71 package you get many of the features serious 4×4 enthusiasts demand, including Rancho shocks, front and rear skid plates, and an automatic locking rear differential.

Much of my time with the Silverado was accomplished on smooth pavement, although one stretch of gravel road and a patch of clay slough allowed me to make the switch to 4×4, a transition accomplished in under 10 seconds with a flick of the dial. Throughout my romp, 4H was the choice with 4Lo at the ready, although it was never needed. The Silverado maintained its grip and composure throughout my all-too-short adventure.

What I really wanted to do was repeat the off-road experience I had the previous week in a Nissan Titan XD, an Arizona adventure with its share of ascensions, berms, and declensions. Alas, time was not on my side, but I must say I doubt there is much terrain beyond the Silverado’s reach.

Chevrolet makes carrying payload a snap with that capacity topping one ton in most models. All models come with standard rail protectors as well as an available spray-in bedliner. You can also get LED under-rail box lights and moveable tie-downs in a bid to better see what you’re doing and have the flexibility needed for whatever you’re carrying. The CornerStep (side step) bumpers along with the pocket hand grips enhance ease of bed access and egress.

One important fact about pickup truck shopping is that brand loyalty is strong, especially as owners fiercely defend their respective brands. Still, there is always a segment of people willing to make a switch and that’s something the truck brands work diligently to minimize. In the Silverado, Chevrolet continues to provide a model that refuses to play second fiddle to anyone, especially the Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500 series.

Stepping it Up With the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado High Country 4×4

How do you cater to the pickup truck buyer that wants the next big thing? Usually, that means offering more horsepower or a higher towing rating. It can also mean rolling out yet another sub-model, a niche edition that has all the chrome embellishments, striping, and interior pomp that defines some models.

Chevrolet Silverado High Country 4×4

In GM’s case, you give customers the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado High Country, a 4×2 or 4×4 crew cab model that answers similar models from Ford, Ram, and Toyota. A 4×4 version of this western-themed truck was a recent weekly drive, a hulking display of chrome, high-end power and luxury appointments wrapped in a four-door truck body.

I am not a big pickup truck fan. Or what I should say is that I am not a devotee of full-size pickup trucks. My truck tastes (and needs) run smaller as in the Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier, a segment that will soon expand to include the latest iteration of the Chevrolet Colorado.

Thats not to say I don’t appreciate the big pickup trucks and those that drive them there is a reason why these vehicles sell so well and are prized by families, sportsmen, and commercial accounts alike. And you shouldn’t misunderstand my not a fan status as hostility: when such vehicles arrive I try to use them as you would, minus the towing and payload pile ons.

Western-Themed Pickup Trucks

That Chevrolet developed the High Country should elicit an its about time response from Silverado faithful. Then again, the High Country Chevrolet intrudes into GMC Sierra territory, a truck that is as opulent as anything its sibling brand has to offer.

In years past, GMC would have squawked, but in the new GM it is Chevrolet that upholds the company, accounting for more than two-thirds of the companys US sales. If its Chevy dealers wanted the High Country there was nothing that was going to stop GM from supplying it to them.

And Chevrolets entry is also a clear response to what its competitors are doing. The Ford F-150 line is bolstered by several special high-end models, including the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited editions. The Ram 1500 offers three Laramie editions to choose from: Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and the Laramie Limited. And Toyota has gotten into the act with its Platinum and 1794 Edition, the latter paralleling the F-150 King Ranch, as well as the 1500 Laramie editions, and now the Silverado High Country.

Chrome-Cladded Crew Cab

Its chrome, baby! That was my first reaction when the High Country arrived. This model is marked by a unique slatted chrome grille, a chrome skid plate and chrome touches on the side mirrors, the door handles and on the trim.

Special high country badging is found directly above the Silverado name on both sides and the opposite side at the rear. At the rear of the truck near the tail lamps 4×4 placarding was present. This model was outfitted with 20-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels set within all-season tires. All-terrain tires are optional.

And the newest feature for Chevrolet and GMC trucks was also present: CornerStep inlays on both sides of the rear bumper to make climbing on back easier. Its a smart feature that is best appreciated once it has been tried. A 5-foot, 8-inch box is standard; as equipped the test model was outfitted with the optional 6-foot, 6-inch box.

Where Western Looks and Luxury Converge

The High Country gives the Silverado a decidedly western look, but not so much that you’re put off by embossing or overwhelmed by some odd color scheme that makes the interior look busy. Embossing is on the front headrests, but not on the rear seats. And, mercifully, it isn’t slapped on the steering wheel, across the dashboard or on the glove box.

The seats are clad in leather, a Saddle Brown look that is at once elegant as it is restrained. That same covering is found across the instrument panel and on the doors, luxurious touches that are welcome.

What sets the High Country apart from the pack are numerous special goodies that arent offered elsewhere or otherwise are part of a package. This model includes all the amenities found in the LTZ and adds in 12-way power adjustable front seats, a Bose audio system, a power-sliding rear window, as well as front and rear parking assist.

Choose the $1,345 premium package that came with the test model and you get a heated steering wheel, power adjustable pedals, a trailer brake controller, forward collision alert and lane departure warning. Additional features include a power sunroof, navigation, under seat storage, a tonneau cover, and tubular assist steps.

Seating, Connectivity and Compartments

Get behind the wheel of the High Country and you’re supported by a firm, but comfortable seat. Chevrolet has the instrument panel set up with two large analog dials flanking four smaller dials located above the digital driver information center. To the left of the steering wheel are trailering and drive control switches. On the steering wheel itself are both cruise and secondary controls.

The center stack is highlighted by an 8-inch touchscreen display with buttons and dials underneath. The Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system is one of the better ones out there fairly easy to figure out and just as easy to use. At the bottom of the panel are three USB ports, 12 volt outlets and a 120-volt outlet. Two more USB ports, an auxiliary port, and an S/D card are located inside the deep console compartment that divides the front seats.

Speaking of compartments, there are so many places to stash your stuff including a dual glove box, multiple in-door pockets and the front setback pockets. Fold up part or all of the split bench rear seat and additional in-cabin space can be had. Sure, you have the truck bed to carry your stuff too, but the in-cabin storage possibilities are excellent.

The Bottom Line

With its 6.2-liter V-8 engine, the Silverado High Country has no lack of power to draw upon 420 horsepower, in fact. Its acceleration is excellent, the electric steering is effortless, and braking is superb. The High Country is designed to do the job of a work truck while delivering an outstanding cabin experience.

You’ll pay upwards of $55,000 to get a High Country 4×4 and you’d be hard-pressed to get 20 mpg. Neither its price nor its less than stellar fuel economy are likely deterrents for shoppers of this Country Cadillac or Texas Limousine.

Fleet Favorite Chevrolet Impala Seeks to Attract a Consumer Audience

April 12, 2013 by admin 1 Comment

All-new Chevrolet Impala rolls out.

You know that you have a problem on your hands when the chief shoppers of your product are fleet buyers. In the auto industry, “fleet” typically translates into “rental car” companies, not consumers. The latter group is what car manufacturers should prefer, as consumers are more likely to pay closer to full price, which also helps that model retain its value over the long haul. Fleet sales increase market share, but owning a “fleet fav” is not what most car shoppers desire.

Chevrolet Impala

The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala has arrived.

From Fleets to Consumers

The Chevrolet Impala is a fleet favorite and for that reason it hasn’t been attracting the kind of support that GM would like for its flagship Chevy to garner. Indeed, the Detroit Bureau pegs that fleet percentage at 70 percent, a number Chevrolet would like to see lowered to about 30 percent. At the same time, Chevrolet would like Impala’s annual sales of approximately 170,000 units to increase and the new sedan will be produced at two plants in anticipation of a boost in demand.

The next generation Chevrolet Impala arrives in Chevrolet showrooms this month as a 2014 model, one that will offer both four cylinder and V-6 engine choices. The flagship sedan is priced from $27,535 and offers updated technologies and new content.

2014 Chevrolet Impala Specifications

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala comes in within fractions of an inch of the outgoing model, weighing slightly more too at 3,800 pounds. Despite no big difference in size and weight, its base engine is a 2.5-liter inline four. This 16-valve engine is rated at 196 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 186 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm. Paired with its six-speed automatic transmission, its estimated few economy is 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Chevrolet ImpalaBuyers can choose a 3.6-liter V-6 engine, a 24-valve motor that makes 305 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 264 foot-pounds of torque at 5,300 rpm. It, too, is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and is expected to get 19 mpg around the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Like the midsize Chevrolet Malibu, the Chevrolet Impala will also offer a partial hybrid model: the Impala eAssist, outfitted with a 2.4-liter four cylinder engine, an electric motor and a six-speed automatic transmission. Its estimated fuel economy rating will place it only behind the Toyota Avalon Hybrid, with the Chevy delivering 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. That’s a distant second, however, as the fully hybridized Avalon is rated at 40 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.

Cabin Amenities and Features

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala is sold in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels. Seating surfaces range from cloth for the LS, cloth/vinyl for the LT and perforated leather for the LTZ. Microfiber-trimmed seats are available for LT and LTZ models.

The centerpiece of the Chevrolet Impala is its Chevrolet MyLink interface with it security keypad. Its a secured storage system too, one that can only be accessed with the driver’s personal identification number (see PIN This 2014 Chevrolet Impala). Thus, both the personal information you have stored on the computer screen and the personal items you have squirreled away can remain safely out of harm’s way.

Find New Roads Campaign

The “Chevy Runs Deep” ad campaign is now dead, replaced by a “Find New Roads” initiative rolled out in Jan. The Impala is part of that campaign which includes a special lease offer of $279 per month for 36 months with $2,799 due at signing for an Impala LT with a V-6 engine. That deal is important as it can make this all-new, five-passenger front-wheel-drive sedan easily available to more consumers.

PIN This 2014 Chevrolet Impala

February 22, 2013 by admin 1 Comment

Chevrolet is still calling the Impala its flagship sedan, despite its plans to introduce the burly full-size Australian-built Chevrolet SS for the 2014 model year. Thats understandable since the SS is more of a niche player or will only be sold stateside, while the Chevrolet Impala is the brands standard bearer. At least that is so among family sedans.

Secure Computing Storage

For 2014, the Chevrolet Impala is all new, a large front-wheel-drive sedan that made an early preview at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The five passenger Impala is a volume leader and is the best selling vehicle in its segment. Beginning with the 2014 edition it will also offer a technological advantage not found elsewhere: secure storage.

That secured storage isn’t simply a glove box or other lockable compartment, rather it begins with the computer information that is so easily accessible to nearly anyone in todays cars. Specifically, Chevrolet will include a valet mode option that will enable owners to protect their personal information that can be retrieved on the sedans 8-inch screen through its Chevrolet MyLink system.

Valet Mode

What Chevrolet did is to provide a keypad interface where owners can key in their four-digit personal identification number, repeating the process again to verify it, then touching a digital lock button that tells the system to block everyone out. Besides blocking users on the touchscreen, the related keys at the base of the screen are disabled. To reactivate access, simply key in your PIN.

The Impala keypad access feature represents its valet mode or what comes in handy when you turn your car keys over to an attendant. This security arrangement, not available on competing models, gives owners the assurance that their stored personal information cannot be retrieved. That information is extremely delicate, providing personal details about route information and address books that any owner would rather keep away from prying eyes.

Secure Physical Storage

The center stack display also offers another feature: the faceplate can retract to open a small storage compartment large enough to handle certain personal items such as a cell phone, a wallet or an MP3 player.

The Impala also benefits from next generation Chevrolet MyLink technology. The newest version of this award-winning system makes it possible for users to choose up to four graphic appearances as well as to click and drag icons, just as you would do with a tablet or smartphone.

Chevy Impala Specs

The 2014 Chevy Impala is built on a 111.7-inch wheelbase and is 201.3 inches long by 73 inches wide by 58.9 inches tall. This vehicle weighs 3,800 pounds and offers 105 cubic feet of passenger volume. It has an 18.8 cubic-foot trunk.

The standard engine is a 3.6-liter direct injection V-6 that makes 305 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 264 foot-pounds of torque at 5,200 rpm. A 2.5-liter four cylinder engine is also available, rated at 195 horsepower and 187 foot-pounds of torque. Also, a special Impala eAssist package is equipped with a 182-horsepower 2.4-liter four cylinder engine. Each Chevy Impala is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Top Competitors

Among the Impalas main competitors are the Dodge Charger, Ford Taurus, Hyundai Azera, Nissan Maxima and the Toyota Avalon. An early spring 2013 release is planned.

At a Glance: 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

February 18, 2013 by admin 4 Comments

2014 Chevrolet Silverado
The face of the all-new Chevrolet Silverado.

Among pickup trucks, the full-size Chevrolet Silverado is one of the best sellers. Include its GMC Sierra twin in the mix and GM sells nearly as many big pickup trucks as does Ford. For 2014 the Chevrolet Silverado is all-new, the latest generation in a string of models that have upheld the brands truck heritage.

The new model is not a radical design departure from the 2013 pickup truck. You will recognize its styling cues, while noting the more robust body lines. This truck offers improved aerodynamics and built-in cooling features, and is powered by a family of new cast aluminum engines.

New Engine Family

Those engines are new versions of three tried and true truck engines that have long been used in the Chevrolet Silverado. Each engine has a new cylinder head design, features direct injection fuel systems and a smaller combustion chamber. Cylinder deactivation is used across the board as is continuously variable valve timing, all part of the EcoTec3 nomenclature assigned to this engine family. Hello EcoTec3; good-bye Vortec.

The standard engine is a 4.3-liter V-6, followed by V-8 engines displacing at 5.3- and 6.2-liters. Chevrolet says that all three offer improved torque, better overall power and improved efficiency. Each engine is married with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Quieter Cabins

Truck cabins have seen substantial improvement in recent years, with many interiors rivaling sedans. A quiet cabin is often elusive, but thanks to new inlaid doors for reduced wind noise, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is expected to come in much quieter.

Chevrolet describes the Silverado’s cabin as more functional as well as comfortable. In a nod to customer demand for crew cabs, Chevrolet designed the Silverado’s interior to offer sedan comfort, what it says, sets a benchmark for full-size trucks.

Soft touch materials are found throughout the cabin and most models are outfitted with a gauge cluster that includes a 4.2-inch driver information center. All cabin controls are laid out within easy reach, offering sensible and functional access. For instance, the integrated trailer brake control found on some models is placed up high and to the left the steering wheel for ease of driver access.

Technology and Safety

Chevrolet MyLink, an available infotainment system, provides linking capabilities for as many as 10 devices. MyLink features voice recognition, a feature that enables users to make phone calls, browse media services, plug in destinations and enjoy music with audibly placed commands. Each model is outfitted with multiple USB ports and comes equipped with both 12- and 110-volt power outlets.

Safety remains a big selling point for all passenger vehicles, including pickup trucks. The new Silverado offers a strengthened steel frame with the main rails and key cross members solidified. A number of safety features found elsewhere in the broad GM product line up are coming to the Chevrolet Silverado too including forward collision alert, lane departure warning, active front safety seat, and front and rear park assist. All large Chevrolet trucks are equipped with stability control, hill start assist and trailer sway control.

As before, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado will be sold in 2WD and 4WD, and offer numerous cabin and truck bed configurations. Add in the various trim levels and you can make a truck that is uniquely your own.

Pickup Truck Competition

The new Chevrolet Silverado comes to the market following an update of the Ram 1500 and as a new Toyota Tundra rolls out. The Ford F-150 and Nissan Titan are expected to be updated within the next 12 to 18 months too, giving full-size pickup truck buyers a choice of new trucks across the board. Chevrolet, for its part, intends to compete hard for new customers as this profitable segment continues to recover following the housing bust of 2009.
