Genesis G70

Genesis G70: Affordable, Luxury Sedan

Genesis is now firmly established as a luxury marque, with three sedans to choose from. This fall, its first SUV arrives, giving the brand the volume vehicle it needs. Within a few more years, the Genesis lineup should number six distinct models, including an electric vehicle.

We recently drove the G70, the smallest of the three sedans and the one we see as probably the strongest threat to established European players such as the BMW 4 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.


2020 Genesis G70 Review


The 2020 Genesis G70 starts at $35,450, plus a $995 freight charge. It comes with standard rear-wheel drive and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Models equipped with the available turbocharged V6 engine and all-wheel drive cost $46,650. For 2019, one year after its introduction, the G70 is unchanged except for equipment shuffling.

Exterior

Genesis is finding its way in the luxury sphere just fine, thank you very much. There is a connection between all three sedans, but each one utilizes unique grilles and LED accent lighting touches. Still, the overall look is stately, with sporty highlights quickly evident.

Our test 3.3T supplied the best blend of luxury and sportiness with its elegant lighting, long wheelbase, short overhangs, boomerang side vent trim, and red Brembo brake calipers that punctuate the 19-inch sport wheels set within summer tires. Otherwise, the standard features include 18-inch wheels, twin-tipped exhaust tips, heated side mirrors, and an automatic opening trunk.



Interior

It is a stretch to say the G70 seats five people, but it is common to offer seatbelts for a handful of passengers in this class. Nevertheless, the G70 offers excellent seating for two with supportive and comfortable seats up front and a bench seat in the rear. Rear legroom is very tight, especially when the front seats are pushed back. Ideally, those seats will hold two youngsters – if you need room for four or five adults, the G80 is the far better choice.

One thing we’re thankful is that the bolstering for the G70 isn’t overwrought – it is just right. On the sport trim the driver’s seat features power side bolsters, which allows for the customization you want. That’s preferable over seats with hard, inflexible bolsters (here’s looking at you Recaro) that offer a take it or leave it proposition.

Opt for the available Prestige package and the quilted leather seats will impress. The red contrast stitching on the black leather is especially fetching. The metal-covered pedals add sportiness. Overall, the interior is inviting, sporty, and sophisticated. We like that Genesis did important things such as tilting the instruments panel and center stack toward the driver. It renders a small cockpit vibe and that’s something we like.



Safety

The 2020 G70 comes with a decent roster of driver-assist safety features. The standard features include high beam assist, forward collision avoidance assistance with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and smart cruise control with full stop and go.

Two available features worth considering are the surround-view monitor and the heads-up display. The first one utilizes four cameras to expand the driver’s viewpoint significantly while also rendering a bird’s eyes view for ease of parking. The second one simply takes the important driver information, including speed, navigation, and safety alerts, and projects that into a full-color display on the windshield.

Technology

We’re impressed with the tech offerings accompanying the 2020 G70. For starters, it comes with a 6-speaker audio system with satellite radio and HD Radio, an 8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, and two USB ports. The standard features should satisfy the majority of shoppers.

That said, the upgrades are noteworthy and include a 15-speaker Lexicon audio system, a wireless charging pad, and navigation. The only missing ingredient is a 110-volt power outlet.



Performance

Genesis supplies two engine choices with the 2020 G70, beginning with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The second choice is a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. Both work with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and rev-matching.

Of special note is that the transmission is a “shift-by-wire” arrangement. That means there are no mechanical parts connecting the transmission to the wheels. Instead, the computer signals each shift point.

What about a manual transmission? Is one offered? Happily, that answer is yes, although it is only offered with the base engine and represents a $3,500 add on. This feature, though, should gladden the heart of enthusiasts as it also includes a limited-slip differential. We’re happy it is still offered as key competitors, including BMW and Mercedes-Benz, no longer offer three-pedal fun.

Upgrading to the V6 brings in a few performance extras, including a sport-tuned suspension, a Brembo performance braking system, and a limited-slip differential. Our rear-wheel-drive tester came with the V6 and its special performance benefits.

The G70 V6 supplies excellent step-off acceleration and ample passing power. The twin-turbo arrangement means quick spooling with inconsequential lagtime. This was the second time in as many years we’ve driven a G70 with the engine upgrade and continue to enjoy all its advantages, including its sub-5-second 0-60 mph time.

We found the steering feedback precise, with improvements realized through its various drive modes. This sedan manages very well and strikes a near-perfect balance between ride and handling. You’ll attack corners with ease and pull out with confidence. The beefy Brembo brakes bring this sedan to a quick stop.

We also realized the G70 matches the BMW 3/4 Series in every driving department – it is tossable, fun to drive, and fast. We doubt the standard engine is a slouch. That it still offers a manual gearbox option is reason to seriously consider that particular powertrain.



Competitive Set

The entry-level sedan market remains a strong one with nearly every player represented. Beyond the BMW 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, this class offers the Cadillac CT4, Jaguar XE, Volvo S60, Audi A4, Lincoln MKZ, Lexus IS, Infiniti Q50, and the Acura ILX. The G70 shares its mechanical underpinnings with the Kia Stinger, but its in-house competitor isn’t a luxury model.


Our Recommendation


We could tell you to get the standard model with rear-wheel drive (and opt for the manual gearbox if so inclined) and call it a day. That said, it’s kind of hard to overlook the 3.3T and all the power it brings to bear.

To make things easier on you, choose the standard model if a car such as the BMW 330i is on your list. Otherwise, if you’re considering a BMW M4 coupe or convertible (sorry, there is no M3 sedan), then the 3.3T makes sense.

Ultimate Luxury: 2020 Genesis G90

One of the descriptions for “genesis” is “beginning” and that’s an appropriate name for Hyundai’s luxury marque.

The Genesis G90 was the brand’s first standalone model when it launched in 2017. Three years later and this full-size sedan is currently sold alongside the midsize G80 and the compact G70 sedans. A GV80 SUV rolls out later this year as Genesis begins shifting its focus to the utilities.

The Genesis G90 is a competitive product in a niche segment. This big sedan offers high style and a limousine-like riding experience. The G90 doesn’t have years of prestige to build on like its German and Lexus competitors, but it makes a strong effort. Whereas the others can become very costly, the G90 holds its own – the most expensive model costs less than $80,000. Its fully loaded competitors top out well above $100,000.



2020 Genesis G90 Review


Genesis offers the 2020 Enclave in two configurations: 3.3T ($72,200) and 5.0 ($75,700). Add $1,025 for the destination charge.

Both configurations come with standard rear-wheel drive. Upgrading to all-wheel drive adds $2,500. There are no package offerings with any G90.



Exterior

If it’s a long canvas you want, the G90 delivers. This sedan is sleek with a modern design, marked by an oversized, diamond-shaped gaping grille. The look is appealing, but it’s also controversial. Some might say the grille is polarizing.

Genesis makes great use of LEDs as they separate the frontal lighting and even make an appearance along the sides within the ornamentation which is affixed just ahead of the front doors. It’s a dramatic touch you’ll notice anytime you unlock the doors.

The G90 has a fair amount of chrome – on the wheels, surrounding the windows, and across the rocker panels, and wrapping the base of the rear. Inasmuch as the grille may surprise some, it’s the rear deck design that can be difficult to accept. The roofline falls to the trunk, almost like a hatchback, but not quite. The trunk itself is taller than most, giving the G90 a bustle-back look popularized in the 1930s and again 50 years later in the Cadillac Seville, Lincoln Versailles, and the Chrysler Imperial. But it’s not a clear-cut design and that’s what makes it so curious.

Interior

The largest luxury sedans offer excellent space for five. But don’t blame the rear passengers if they prefer to limit their numbers to two each as they spread out and enjoy their space. And who could blame them? Each of the outboard spots makes a strong run in seat comfort versus the front row chairs.

Credit Genesis with choosing only the finest materials and carefully crafting the cabin with them. Fine leathers, rich woods, and chrome touches underscore that it means business. And they’re carefully laid out with the pleasing visual feel and touch you’d expect in this class.

It’s the special touches that get noticed too, including the analog clock, the deep alcove for the cell phone that also includes a wireless charger, the split-opening center storage compartment, and the elegant interior lighting.
Now back to the rear seat – what’s odd is that it doesn’t fold down to supply access to the trunk. That’s probably not a big deal in this segment.



Safety

One thing we noticed about some of the G90’s competitors (with Lexus the lone exception), is that they charge extra for the advanced driver-assist safety technologies we expect in our cars. Not only that, they’re often bundled with other features and that gets silly and expensive.

Genesis takes a wise approach to the market. The G90 comes with such features as active lane control, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and a surround-view camera system.

This year, Genesis upped its game by adding lane-centering management, automatic emergency braking for reverse gear, and an upgraded collision warning system. Thus, you’ll find all the major features included.



Technology

Just as Genesis supplies a strong roster of standard safety equipment, likewise the brand knocks things out of the park with technology, beginning with a 12.3-inch display. That’s the size you’ll find in the most expensive models of this day.

A 17-speaker, 900-watt Lexicon audio system is standard as is the previously mentioned wireless charging pad. Genesis includes subscription-free HD Radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, and multiple USB ports. The 5.0 model adds the rear entertainment system and cooled outboard seats.



Performance

Genesis could have supplied one engine choice with the G90 and that would have satisfied most shoppers. Instead, we have two engine choices and the differences between the two are small.

It all begins with a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine with a rating of 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. The other choice is a 5.0-liter V8 engine with 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Our Genesis—supplied test model had the turbo, although we’ve driven cars equipped with the V8. Our finding is that they deliver similar performance, with the V8 supplying an edge in step-off acceleration, while the V6 nearly matches it in passing power. Both engines work with a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission.

There is another factor shoppers should consider: available all-wheel drive. Yes, the standard rear-wheel-drive system does great with the adaptive dampers benefitting the buttery ride. Choose all-wheel drive and you’ll notice an improvement in handling, particularly on twisty roads and when cornering. No, the G90 on account of its size doesn’t have the handling chops of the sporty G70, but that’s not its design: comfort is. We’d gladly put the G90 against all comers in the ride comfort department.

If there is anything we’d like to see improve it would be in its fuel economy. No matter the configuration, the G90 drinks its gasoline – you’d be hard-pressed to average 20 mpg on most trips.



Competitive Set

Not many luxury marques offer traditional full-size sedans these days. From Germany, we have the Audi A8L, BMW 7 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The Lexus LS is the lone big sedan offering from Japan.

The U.S. offerings aren’t nearly as large and include the Lincoln Continental. Like the Continental, the Cadillac CT6 is another model to consider.


Our Recommendation

You can’t go wrong with a G90 in either configuration. We give a slight edge to the V8 over the turbocharged V6, but the differences between the two are simply quite small. As pointed out, the 5.0 adds the rear entertainment system and cooled outboard seats. Opt for all-wheel drive if you live in a snowy climate.

All in all, the G90 establishes does a laudable job in fulfilling its mission. Its price point may be its greatest appeal, especially as it bundles nearly everything you want without charging extra.

It’s a Wrap: 2018 in Review

Happy New Year to you and yours! The ending of one year and the start of another should give us pause, allowing us to reflect on what once was as well as assess our lives as we look forward.

As an automotive journalist, I like to keep tabs on my progression, especially as the industry continues to change and I adapt to it. On a personal note, I’ve seen writing clients go and new ones arrive. But that’s common in a landscape that’s never static.

What hasn’t changed is this website itself, with Auto Trends Magazine launching in April 2008 and, aside from a short-term shut down due to hacking in 2016, we’re still at it. That’s quite a noteworthy accomplishment as not a few sites fold after a few years or are sold off to an internet publishing house.

A big part of what this site is about is the car reviews you’ll find, typically on a weekly basis. For 2018, 62 vehicles were offered by manufacturers for my review, which is more than one per week. That said, there were a few weeks, including a span of two months, when no cars were available. Thus, we alternated between famine and feast for about half the year.

As you might guess, crossovers led the pack, representing 29 of the models tested. At one point a string of 11 consecutive utility vehicles was presented, which gave this writer a nice cross-section of the market, ranging from the Nissan Kicks to the Land Rover Range Rover Velar.

Of the 29, the most interesting one was the 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL). This model successfully maintains Jeep ruggedness and off-road prowess, therefore it is no surprise to me that it is so popular. Personally, I’m looking forward to the release this spring of the Jeep Gladiator pickup truck, which is based on the Wrangler platform.

Five of the 62 vehicles were pickup trucks, which kind of surprises me that there weren’t more. Of the five, three were Silverados, underscoring Chevrolet’s interest in getting its pickup truck out there. The Nissan Titan and Ford F-150 Raptor rounded out the truck reviews, the latter representing the most powerful model of its kind.

This past year also included an uncommon body style among my reviews, when not one, but three wagons were presented. I got to drive the Buick Regal TourX, Jaguar XF Sportbrake, and the Volvo V60, and was impressed by all three. If you haven’t considered a wagon before, each model offers a nice combination of car riding and utility, although it is doubtful that any one of them will change the market. By the way, the lone minivan tested was the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, which is a laudable vehicle in terms of passenger space and fuel efficiency.

Manufacturers may be shifting to crossovers, but 24 car models were still presented, plus the three wagons. Among the near two dozen models were a handful of hybrids, including the Hyundai Ioniq and Toyota Avalon Hybrid. One model was my very first electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf. That model gave me a tremendous insight into life with an EV.  Specifically, that an owner has to adjust the way he drives, let alone plan charge times carefully, are big concerns. I’m still not convinced we’re ready for a wholesale shift to all things electric. Hybrids yes, pure electric vehicles no.

I’m often asked, “what is your favorite car?” Although I don’t have a number one, I do very much appreciate the Jaguar F-Type. Happily, a “400 Sport” model found its way to me early in the year, a special single-year model with an extra boost in horsepower. I also got to test the Ford Mustang GT and the Kia Stinger GT, the latter offering a performance side we hadn’t seen before from this Korean manufacturer.

Several new models were among the 62, including all three wagons, as well as the Kia Stinger and the Genesis G70. The Hyundai Kona and Veloster Turbo; Toyota Camry, CH-R and Corolla Hatchback; Volvo XC40 and V60; Nissan Kicks; and Subaru Ascent were either all-new or reflected a key redesign.

I ended 2018 the way I started it: behind the wheel of the Subaru Forester utility vehicle. That model was followed by the Nissan Rogue, which kicks off my 2019 reviews.

As for traveling, 2018 began strongly, then faded fast. My last car-related excursion was in May, but I also took in more than a dozen locally based automotive events from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and beyond. My first scheduled trip for 2019 is the Chicago Auto Show in February, continuing a tradition started three years ago.

Raise the Stakes: 2019 Genesis G70

With the G70, Genesis now has a trio of luxury sedans to consider.

Things are getting serious at Genesis Motors. When launching the upscale brand in 2015 with two sedans, the Hyundai Motor Group promised to populate its luxury marque with six models.

This year, Genesis released its third model, the compact G70 sedan, making its strongest case yet as a luxury manufacturer. Indeed, where the midsize G80 and full-size G90 sedans established toeholds in their respective segments, the G70 is going after the heart of the matter, in this case, models such as the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Audi A4, among others.

Yes, Genesis is delivering its sedans first, with two SUVs to follow. A sixth model, perhaps a hybrid sports car, will flesh out Genesis’ product line.

And if you think Genesis Motors will rest on its laurels come 2020, you have another thing coming. The Korean luxury brand aims to take on the world, and will likely do battle with Lexus, Jaguar, Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti, and other luxury brands moving forward.

2019 Genesis G70 Overview

The G70 may be the best example of Genesis’ bona fides, a sedan with a strong presence and the luxury and performance chops to back it up. It is Genesis’ riskiest model yet, as it invades territory long dominated by a few players. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have the strongest entries (and they’re also new for 2019), with competitors such as the Lexus IS, Cadillac ATS and the Jaguar XE offering a modest presence.

2019 Genesis G70Genesis offers the 2019 G70 in five trims, with each one based on a particular engine and drivetrain. The base model comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This rear-wheel-drive model starts at $34,900. Add $995 for the destination fee.

The second model is the all-wheel-drive version of the base model. This one starts at $36,900. Yes, there is a six-speed manual gearbox available with the base rear-wheel-drive model only. Here, your cost is $37,900.

The fourth trim is powered by a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This one retails for $43,750. If you prefer all-wheel drive, then your cost is $45,750.

2019 Genesis G70You’ll also find various package upgrades, including 2.0T Elite Package ($5,000), 2.0T Dynamic Package ($9,000; $8,000 on the all-wheel drive) and 2.0T Sport Package ($10,000; $9,000 on the all-wheel drive). You’ll also find a 3.3T Elite Package ($1,750), 3.3T Dynamic Package ($4,250) and 3.3T Sport Package ($5,750) choices. We’ll mention items from those packages as we discuss various other features moving forward.

Importantly, the 2019 Genesis G70 matches the starting price of the 2019 BMW 3 Series. The G70’s top-end pricing is lower than the BMW and its amenities list goes deeper. What it doesn’t offer to U.S. customers is diesel or hybrid variants. We think the latter will eventually become commonly found in Genesis’ future product plans.

A Matter of Style

You may have heard that the Genesis G70 is related to the Kia Stinger. This is true. The corporate cousins share a common platform, although the G70 is slightly smaller than the Kia. It also takes its own styling direction — the silhouettes of the two models are quite dissimilar.

Up front, the G70 has a strong fascia, amplified by a gaping grille covered in mesh. Sleek wing-like headlamps touch the top of the grille. Large dugouts for the lower intake, stress this model’s aggressive demeanor.

2019 Genesis G70The G70’s profile features a long hood, a high beltline and a sloping roofline leading to a notched rear deck. Important design elements include boomerang accented side vents, which are common to sports cars, sport alloy wheels set within performance tires, red Brembo brakes and just enough body sculpting to keep things interesting.

From the rear, the fascia features an oversized trunk lip spoiler that serves as a bulge transecting the length of the trunk. Wraparound tail lamps, dual chrome exhaust tips, and a diffuser complete the look.

Yes, there are some differences between trims. My description applies to the top-trim model, which was my test vehicle and topped $52,000.

2019 Genesis G70Inside, the G70 delivers an elegant, yet straightforward cabin. It isn’t cluttered with knobs and switches or overrun by complex lines or secreted compartments. Much like the BMW 3 Series, the layout features analog readouts, sizable round dials, and a minimalist persona.

The quilted leather seats are the eye candy of choice for the G70. The visual appeal is complemented by passenger comfort, with the front seats offering a proper amount of bolstering and support. The rear seat is comfortable too, but like the BMW, legroom comes at a premium. Unless the driver or front passenger elect to have their seats pulled forward, you’ll soon realize that the rear seat is best left for children.

Standard interior features include a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, imitation leather seats, power front seats with driver power lumbar support, climate control and full power accessories. Optional features include alloy pedals, Nappa leather seating surfaces with sport quilting, heated and ventilated front seats, and aluminum trim.

Technology and Safety

Some luxury manufacturers make obtaining technology expensive. That is if you want such add-ons as Apple CarPlay, expect to pay $300 or more for the service. Most mainstream manufacturers include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for no charge. The same can be said for Genesis.

The standard color display measures seven inches. You’ll also find a rearview camera with parking guidelines, Bluetooth connectivity, a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio and HD Radio, and three USB ports. Optional features include a 15-speaker Lexicon audio system and full navigation.

Driver-assist safety technologies build on any model’s core safety systems, including brake assist, a suite of airbags, and crash test scores. We don’t yet have test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but we’re confident this Genesis will do fine.

All models come with forward collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, blind-spot collision warning with rear cross-traffic collision warning, smart (adaptive) cruise control with stop and go, driver attention warning, and high beam assist. This is a remarkable suite of advanced safety features and they’re included at no extra charge. Much of the competition is gradually adding features to the standard equipment list, but Genesis has the full package included.

On the Road With the 2019 Genesis G70

What flavor is your Genesis G70? My preferred model is the middle trim with the base engine and a manual transmission. I’m of the school where “rowing your own” is the preferred choice. When I’ve driven a BMW 3 Series with a manual gearbox, you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

Alas, Genesis sent the top-trim model my way. But I have no complaints with that decision whatsoever — it just means I’m not able to make comments about rev shifting and clutch uptake. In any case, BMW and Mercedes-Benz no longer offer manuals with their compact sedans, a decision that disappoints some enthusiasts to no end. Paddle shifters, anyone?

2019 Genesis G70If you opt for the base G70 engine, you’ll have 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque at the ready. These are good numbers, although if you want stronger performance to go with adroit maneuvering and a firm ride, an engine upgrade is in order.

That’s exactly what was under the hood of my test model — a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. It delivers an outstanding 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds or two full seconds faster than the standard engine.

One of the first things I noticed about the G70 is its fairly hushed, but still aggressive exhaust note on ignition. The low hum suggests something strong is at play, a fact confirmed by engaging the gas pedal. Copious amounts of power is at the ready and quickly tapped with no hesitation felt.

While power is certainly a G70 attribute, where this model’s strength lies is in its handling. Take the Genesis on a twisty road and it remains poised and stays planted on the sharpest turns. Indeed, the combination of Michelin sport tires and excellent suspension tuning ensure success in all your driving endeavors.

The G70 reminds me of the 3 Series in a very important way — it makes most any driver look skilled when entering and leaving corners or while hanging with the twisties. By the way, rear-wheel-drive models get a limited-slip differential.

Is there any downside to the G70? Yes. And that would be its harsh-at-times ride. There is no escaping the fact that when the Sport drive mode is chosen, the ride loses whatever softness is left, while also supplying a real connection with the road. That connection includes magnifying bumps and other road insults, which means you’ll want to choose smooth pavement wherever it can be found.

Parting Thoughts: 2019 Genesis G70

Mission Accomplished. Or at least, Mission Compact Luxury Sedan.

Genesis Motors rounds out its sedan line in an important way, delivering a model that should attract entry-level luxury model shoppers. Yes, Genesis absolutely needs to transition to SUVs, but you have to admire the brand for concentrating on its core competencies before launching an SUV.

Aiding the G70’s cause are robust services that go with it, including complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles with corresponding valet service. That service includes picking up and delivering the G70 for scheduled maintenance and supplying a courtesy replacement vehicle. You’ll also find three years of connected car services, satellite radio along with regular multimedia and navigation updates.

The 2019 Genesis G70 arrives this fall.

The 2019 Genesis G70 is one of three sedans sold by Hyundai’s luxury brand. It has several things we like, including standard rear-wheel drive, an available 6-speed manual gearbox and tough looks. Its arrival, though, comes as the market tilts heavily to SUVs.

Updates for 2019

The 2019 G70 is an all-new model. Its joins the midsize G80 and the large G90 sedans in rounding out Genesis’ sedan lineup. The next three models scheduled to appear in the Genesis portfolio include at least two SUVs and one not-yet-announced body type. They can’t arrive fast enough as sedan sales are small.

Shopping for a 2019 Genesis G70

As a compact luxury sedan, the Genesis G70 takes on the industry’s strongest models, including the pacesetting BMW 3 Series. Other competitors in this segment include the Cadillac ATS, Lexus IS, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4 and the Infiniti Q50.

The Genesis G70 has room for five, although rear space is tight, especially concerning legroom. Its trunk is very small too, measuring just 11 cubic feet. That’s still larger than the 2018 ATS Sedan’s 10.4 cubic feet, but less than the 13 cubic feet in the Audi A4.

2019 Genesis G70

There are two engine choices available and both offer distinct power advantages. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine good for 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Also available is a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 engine with an output of 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque.

Both engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission. However, the base engine with rear-wheel drive supplies an optional 6-speed manual gearbox. That’s an increasingly uncommon option in this segment. Besides standard rear-wheel drive, customers can choose all-wheel drive.

The most efficient G70 is the standard rear-wheel-drive model with the automatic transmission. This one earns 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. That’s a combined 3 mpg better than the manual. Opt for the V6 and your EPA-estimated fuel economy comes in as high as 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Trims to Consider

Genesis offers the 2019 G70 2.0T in six trim levels: Advanced, Elite, Prestige, Dynamic, Sport and Sport M/T, while G70 3.3T variants are available in four trim levels: Advanced, Elite, Prestige and Sport.

All prices do not include the $995 destination charge.

Standard equipment includes LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators, 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin all-season tires and a hands-free smart trunk.

All models come with a proximity key with push-button start, stainless steel front door sill plates, a 12-way power driver’s seat including four-way power lumbar, power windows with front and rear automatic up and down, an 8-way power passenger’s seat, an electronic parking brake, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. Also, dual automatic climate control, a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with HomeLink, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, imitation leather seats, illuminated front vanity mirrors with sliding sun visors, a rear seat folding armrest with cup holders, and a front map light and pin light. Further, you’ll find a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, a rearview camera with parking guidelines, and steering wheel audio, cruise and phone controls.

You’ll also find HD Radio, three USB ports (two front, one rear), a 7-inch color LCD multi-information display, Genesis Connected Services telematics, an 8-inch display audio screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a rearview camera with parking guidelines

Advanced ($34,900 RWD, $36,900 AWD)

The above listed standard equipment is covered in this trim. Select the all-wheel-drive option and this model gains a heated steering wheel.

Choose the twin-turbo 3.3 engine and the price starts at $43,750 ($45,750 for all-wheel drive).

Elite ($39,900 RWD, $41,900 AWD)

Building on the Advanced trim, the Elite adds such features as full LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, power-folding, auto-dimming exterior mirrors with approach lights, and a sunroof. You’ll also find a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, leather seats, navigation and a 15-speaker Lexicon audio system.

Choose the twin-turbo 3.3 engine and the price starts at $45,500 ($47,500 for all-wheel drive).

Prestige ($44,900, AWD Only)

The middle trim features low-beam assist, Nappa leather seats, a power driver seat cushion extension, front passenger four-way power lumbar support, heated rear seats, a surround-view monitor, a heads-up display (HUD) and a Qi wireless charging pad.

Choose the twin-turbo 3.3 engine and the price starts at $45,500 ($47,500 for all-wheel drive).

Dynamic ($48,000 RWD, $50,000 AWD)

Building on the Prestige trim, the Dynamic model adds two performance elements: 19-inch alloy wheels with Michelin PS4 summer tires and a limited-slip differential for rear-wheel drive models only.

Sport ($49,500 RWD, $51,500 AWD)

The Sport level builds on the Dynamic trim and adds such exterior embellishments as a dark chrome grille, copper headlight accents and dark tint taillight covers.

Launch Editions

Genesis will offer a pair of launch editions. The Design begins at $48,750 and the Dynamic comes in at $50,750. Add $2,000 for all-wheel drive.

Standard safety features include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection (FCA), Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW), Rear Cross-traffic Collision Warning (RCCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go (SCC), High Beam Assist (HBA) and Driver Attention Warning (DAW).

Buyer’s Choice

We’re going to weasel out from selecting a recommended trim. Likely, your choice will have everything to do with the type of driver you are.

If performance is your passion, then the base engine with the manual gearbox may be right for you. That said, the V6 engine supplies the kick that takes the rear-wheel-drive version from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

Decisions, decisions…but the choices are quite good no matter how you look at it.

Genesis to Separate From Hyundai Showrooms

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury marque takes the next step.

Launched in November 2015, the Genesis brand has quietly and steadily continued to transition away from Hyundai to stand on its own. Hyundai’s luxury marque is currently composed of just two models, with a third sedan on the way. By 2020, the Genesis nameplate should include six models — three sedans and three SUVs.

Standalone Genesis Showrooms

The big news right now has everything to do with the way the Genesis markets its products. Currently, Hyundai dealerships carry the Genesis, carving out showroom space to present its two models. Certainly, that’s not an ideal way to advance a luxury brand, something Hyundai Motors will rectify by awarding standalone Genesis dealerships to top-tier retailers.

The Hyundai-Genesis split follows a seven-year test of the brand with American consumers. Beginning with the Hyundai Genesis Sedan, followed by the Genesis Coupe and Hyundai Equus, consumer interest and acceptance was quickly confirmed. Indeed, the Genesis sedan quickly became one of the top sellers in the segment. Moreover, consumers expressed interest in a standalone brand, much in the same way Toyota maintains Lexus.

To begin the transition, Hyundai replaced the Equus with an all-new Genesis G90, while an updated Genesis sedan received the Genesis G80 name. However, the Genesis Coupe did not make the transition and ultimately Hyundai discontinued it. Even so, we may yet see a Genesis sport coupe at some point, but it isn’t a priority for the brand.

The first standalone Genesis showroom opened in early January in Korea. Dubbed “Genesis Gangham,” the new showroom sits in Seoul’s Samsung-dong, Gangnam-Gu, the city’s prime business district. The showroom features a “launch bay,” where the drive experience begins. There, shoppers have a choice of five test drive courses on public roads around the district.

US Market Showrooms

As for the US market, Hyundai plans to give some of its 350 elite-level dealers priority to apply for standalone dealerships, according to Automotive News. For the 2019 model year, Hyundai dealers not making the cut will quit selling Genesis product, but will receive compensation from the automaker to cover inventory, training and equipment to service Genesis models and for helping raise Genesis awareness.

Genesis plans to award approximately 100 locations in 48 markets across the United States. Top markets include such major cities as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York as well as San Francisco, Miami and Washington, DC. Some markets will have just one Genesis showroom. Genesis will announce its initial franchise recipients in the coming months, requiring showrooms to open no later than the end of 2020.

As for the upcoming product, the compact G70 sedan is on sale in Korea and arrives in the US this Spring. The Genesis G70 targets such models as the BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

As for the first of three Genesis SUVs, the GV80 Fuel Cell Concept revealed at the 2017 New York International Auto Show likely points to what’s in store. That said, Auto Trends believes the main model will feature a conventional gas-powered drivetrain with a fuel cell or hybrid optional. Hyundai Motors is deeply invested in vehicle electrification, perhaps serving as variants on conventional models such as the GV80.

Strong Luxury Sales

Hyundai Motors’ “go slow” approach to growing the Genesis brand comes as US auto sales pulled back slightly in 2017, following seven consecutive years of growth. Luxury model growth has slowed also, but consumers continue to flock to many models with higher price points. Launching a new brand is an extremely expensive and laborious proposition, a cost Hyundai Motors’ will spread out for several years to come.
