CHEVROLET SUBURBAN

Bigger Yet: 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs

December 11, 2019 by admin 1 Comment

Chevrolet Tahoe (l) and Chevrolet Suburban (r).

Chevrolet’s largest SUVs are completely overhauled for 2021, all-new models that are also larger than ever. The Chevrolet Tahoe (standard wheelbase) and Chevrolet Suburban (stretched wheelbase) are what make the bow-tie brand the top seller in a segment with few non-GM players, most notably the Ford Expedition. Count the Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada as competitors as well, at least with the Tahoe.

We’ve been expecting new Chevrolet SUVs ever since GM updated its full-size pickup trucks in 2019. Based on the same architecture underpinning the Chevrolet Silverado (and GMC Sierra), the new SUVs roll out next summer. We’ll see new GMC Yukon/Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV models as well. Production output for all three brands is handled at GM’s manufacturing plant in Arlington, Texas, which is under renovation to accommodate the new and larger models.

There is a lot to digest about the new Chevrolet models, so we’ll explore the three main highlights.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe.

1. A new rear suspension.

The most significant change for the Tahoe and Suburban isn’t the larger size, roomier cabin or expanded storage space, although the latter two benefit from the new independent rear suspension. Gone is the live axle and leaf springs currently used, exchanged for an independent rear multilink suspension arrangement with coil springs. As a result, Chevrolet lowers the floor of its two large SUVs, which supplies additional cargo room and more space for the second- and third-row passengers.
The benefits of the new suspension system include superior ride and handling. It’s also beneficial for off-roading as this setup allows vehicles to flex better. True, you’re not likely to take either the Tahoe or Suburban on tough trails navigated by the Jeep Wrangler, but you should see improved movement on sandy surfaces.

2021 Chevrolet Suburban.

2. Bigger and roomier.

How much larger are the two Chevrolet SUVs? The 2021 Tahoe will sit on a 120.9 wheelbase, up from 116 inches. Its overall length measures 210.7 inches, compared to the current 204 inches.

As for the Chevy Suburban, it’ll ride on a 134.1-inch wheelbase, up from 130 inches. Its overall length grows to 225.7 inches, up from 224.4 inches. Thus, the difference between the Tahoe and Suburban narrows slightly with the new model.

Inside, the cargo space increases appreciably, to a total of 122.9 cubic feet in the Tahoe and 144.7 cubic feet in the Suburban. One of the most significant changes in the Tahoe’s it its standard cargo space which measures 25.5 cubic feet behind the third row, up from the scant 15.3 cubic feet currently offered.

Another area where the Tahoe shines is with its third-row legroom. The current model offers just 24.8 inches and that’s suitable only for children. For 2021, the space measures 34.9 inches, which is tolerable for most adults. That’s also near the 36.7 inches offered by the Suburban.

3. Three engine choices.

Every Tahoe and Silverado model except for the High Country come with a 5.3-liter V8 engine. The standard engine makes 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. As for the High Country, it gets a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The third engine choice is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine, making 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All three work with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

While the two gas engines are well known, the diesel is new to the product line and a first for the segment. It’s a niche engine for Chevrolet, one that could help the automaker improve its fuel economy ratings, especially if the highway numbers approach 30 mpg.

The Verdict

We haven’t driven the new Chevrolets yet, but on paper, the 2021 models offer compelling updates that should interest consumers. The current models start at $49,000 (Tahoe) and $51,700 (Suburban), plus the freight cost. We expect a cost increase and we soon know just how much the turbo-diesel option adds to it.

Chevrolet Tahoe v. Chevrolet Suburban

November 1, 2019 by admin 3 Comments

The Suburban is the larger of two big Chevy SUVs.

The largest of all utility vehicles are the various Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Ford, and Lincoln models based on their respective company’s full-size truck platforms. They’re among the most substantial passenger vehicles you can buy, prized for their passenger-carrying capabilities, storage space, power, and towing strength.

Chevrolet markets a pair of models under the Tahoe and Suburban names. The GMC equivalents are known as the Yukon and Yukon XL, while Cadillac markets the Escalade and Escalade ESV. In reality, the two Chevrolet models are nearly the same, although there are a few distinctions of note.

Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban

What’re the differences between the Tahoe and Suburban? Mostly, it has everything to do with size.

The Tahoe is big, but the Suburban is bigger still.

The Tahoe sits on a 116-inch wheelbase and measures 203.9 inches long. As for the Suburban, that same platform is stretched to 130 inches with overall length pulled out to 224.4 inches.

Storage capacity heightens those differences.

The 2020 Tahoe has 15.3 cubic feet of storage capacity behind the third-row seat. Behind the second row, there is 51.7 cubic feet. Fold down the second and third rows and there is 94.7 cubic feet of storage capacity available.

Of course, if you need maximum storage capacity, the 2020 Suburban is a clear choice. This one measures 39.3/76.7/121.7 cubic feet, which translates into a substantial increase in the standard and available storage space.

Seating for up to nine.

You can choose your Tahoe in two seating configurations with room for seven or eight passengers. As for the Suburban, a third option is offered: seating for nine. The latter is achieved by choosing an available front bench seat. Happily, that seat can be converted to seat two with the center seat folded.

Third-row legroom.

Some of us cannot imagine sitting in the third row of any vehicle. Other than possible access and egress challenges, the seats are generally not as comfortable as found in the first two rows.

Importantly, legroom is often sacrificed. Here, the Tahoe offers just 24.8 inches of legroom to 34.5 inches in the Suburban. Thus, the Tahoe’s third row is suitable only for children, while the Suburban can hold adults.

That space is slightly roomier than the 33.5 cubic inches in the Chevrolet Traverse, which is the brand’s largest crossover utility vehicle with room for seven or eight.

More Alike Than Not

Nearly everything else about the Tahoe and Suburban is alike, including the exterior design, cabin layout, and mechanicals. Both come with standard rear-wheel drive and available four-wheel drive. The Tahoe starts at $49,000, while the Suburban costs $51,700. The Tahoe has a slight edge in towing, pulling up to 8,600 pounds to the Suburban’s 8,300 pounds.

Lastly, both the 2020 Tahoe and 2020 Suburban are set for a full overhaul for 2021. This follows the 2019 makeover of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, the two pickup truck models that share the architecture with the Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac models.

Rolling Classic: 2018 Chevrolet Suburban

March 6, 2018 by admin 8 Comments

The Chevy Suburban hits all the right notes.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban
No US model matches the Chevrolet Suburban in longevity.

The Chevrolet Suburban makes an important claim to fame and it doesn’t have anything to do with its size. Yes, the Suburban is one of the largest passenger vehicles you can purchase, but what’s significant about this model is that it is the oldest model name of any US vehicle, its history dating to 1935.

The first “Carryall Suburban” was essentially a station wagon bolted to a truck frame. It was derived from a vehicle built for commercial purposes since 1933, then offered to the public under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. During the war years, civilian production ceased, but a military transit version continued. It wasn’t until 2000 when the GMC version was renamed the Yukon XL.

Today, the Suburban soldiers on, now in its eleventh generation. The shorter wheelbase version is known as the Chevy Tahoe, a vehicle reviewed by Auto Trends recently.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban

Three Trims: 2018 Chevrolet Suburban

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban is underpinned by the same platform supporting the full-size Chevrolet Silverado series pickup trucks. The 2018 Suburban comes in LS ($51,495), LT ($56,595) and Premier ($66,195) trims with standard rear- (4×2) and available four- (4×4) wheel drive available. Add $1,295 for the destination charge and another $3,000 for four-wheel drive.

2018 Chevrolet SuburbanAll models come with a 5.3-liter V8 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. New for 2018 is the RST Edition available on the LT and Premier models, two new exterior colors and standard LED daytime running lights across the model line. Two new dealer-installed options roll out: a Borla performance exhaust system and a six-piston Brembo front brake package.

My test model was a 2018 Chevy Suburban LT four-wheel drive. This model retails for $67,075, as it included several packages, including a Luxury Package ($2,860, with front fog lights, front and rear park assist, a power liftgate, power-fold second- and third-row seats, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, rear cross-traffic alert and other upgrades). Chevy also added a Midnight Edition ($2,285) Package with blacked out trim, recovery hooks, a two-speed transfer case, axle and towing enhancements and hill descent control.

Other features included a power sunroof ($995), second-row bucket seats ($795) and an audio system ($495). The final price for my test model dressed in black with a cocoa/dune interior came in at $67,075.

Exterior Highlights

2018 Chevrolet SuburbanWhere the earliest Suburbans were wagons set on truck frames, the current model finds a balance between truck and wagon. The expected long roofline, high beltline and slab sides are very much of the truck variety, but the front fascia and rear liftgate deliver a smoother, kinder look to this model.

Standard features include projector-beam headlamps, LED daytime running lights and tail lamps, black assist steps and 18-inch aluminum wheels. The trim parade adds such features as automatic high beams, fog lamps, power heated and folding side mirrors, 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, a programmable power liftgate and body-side molding. Power-retractable assist steps are a package option on the Premier.

Interior Highlights

Yes, the Suburban can seat as many as nine, particularly if you opt for three rows of bench seating. It is an option some people want, but the other choices include bucket seats up front and captains chairs in the middle row. With seating for seven, eight or nine, the Suburban has you covered.

2018 Chevrolet SuburbanRegardless of what your seating arrangement is, the Suburban’s cabin is as cavernous as they come with huge amounts of space throughout. If there is a penalty seat it would be the third row, but only for exceptionally tall passengers. Legroom is tightest back there, but even with a middle row bench seat you can take your shoes off and slip your feet underneath, getting comfortable the best way you know how. Otherwise, if you don’t need the rear seat it folds flat into the floor.

As you might guess, the 2018 Suburban comes well-equipped, going beyond keyless entry and push-button start to supply numerous amenities. You’ll find full power accessories, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cloth seats, three-zone climate control, floor and overhead consoles and rear compartment underfloor storage.

Options include a tilt and telescopic steering column, a heated steering wheel, leather seats, heated and cooled front seats, power front seats with lumbar support and heated outboard second-row seats.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban

Performance Matters

One thing that surprised me about the Chevrolet Suburban is that it offers one engine choice and a 5.3-liter V8 at that. That’s the same engine powering the shorter wheelbase Tahoe, but at least the Tahoe now offers GM’s largest V8 gas engine displacing at 6.2-liters as an option with the RST.

But don’t look at the smaller engine as some type of deficiency, it isn’t. This engine supplies efficiency as the engine cranks out 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque and also shuts down half the cylinders under certain drive and load conditions. Add it all up and the V8 delivers a class-leading 23 mpg on the highway.

The V8 pulls away from a dead stop with sufficient power, then ups its game when zooming down the highway entrance ramp or passing that big rig on the road. Steering is effortless and just as it should be with a big SUV. And if you’re smart, you won’t even attempt to carve corners — the Suburban is designed to bring you and up to eight additional passengers, all your gear and your trailer from point to point. Allow it to do what it does best and you’ll feel right at home with the Suburban.

Technology & Safety

Chevrolet receives high marks in all things tech. In fact, it may have the best standard tech features of any brand, bar none. I’m including luxury brands, GM’s Cadillac marque is no exception.

Certainly, Chevrolet offers such features that cost extra when offered by some luxury brands, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. OnStar, a proprietary GM telematics system is still relevant today, especially from a security perspective.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban

The Chevrolet entertainment package begins with a six-speaker audio system and adds OnStar 4G LTE and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot that supplies access for up to seven devices. Further, you get Chevrolet MyLink Radio with Bluetooth, satellite radio, a CD player, a 110-volt outlet, five USB ports and an auxiliary input jack. Some models include a nine-speaker Bose audio system or a 10-speaker Bose surround sound audio system.

Other upgrades include a rear-seat Blu-ray entertainment package with second- and third-row displays, four wireless headphones and two additional USB ports.

When it comes to safety technologies, the expected rearview camera is present. You’ll also find on some models lane keep assist with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, low speed forward automatic braking and a safety alert driver seat. All models supply “teen driver,” a feature that enables parents to keep tabs on the driving habits of their young drivers.

Parting Thoughts: 2018 Chevrolet Suburban

There is so much to dissect when examining the Suburban, but at least the trim levels are kept to a manageable three. We think most buyers will choose the four-wheel drive version for the simple reason that if they ever need to go off-road, they can and with their peace of mind intact.

The middle LT trim supplies a reasonable starting point for this big SUV, adding leather, upgraded technologies and other important amenities without busting budgets. Still, the Suburban LT with four-wheel drive will cost you about $60,000 and that’s without the packages my test model had. At least the list price is before the usual generous discounts kick in.

Big SUVs remain extremely important for GM, with Chevrolet selling approximately 56,000 Suburbans last year on top of nearly 99,000 Tahoes. Add in about 84,000 GMC Yukon/Yukon XL models and nearly 38,000 copies of the Cadillac Escalade, and you get a glimpse of a segment that remains strong. Chevrolet remains at the forefront of the segment, delivering more of the big SUVs than any other brand.

Revealed: 2015 Chevrolet Suburban

September 12, 2013 by admin 1 Comment

Model names like Corolla, Civic and Beetle seem to have been around forever, but it is the Chevrolet Suburban that takes the prize as the longest continual model in the world. Come 2015 it will celebrate its 80th anniversary, representing 12 generational changes dating to the heart of the Great Depression.

2015 Chevrolet Suburban
2015 Chevrolet Suburban.

80th Anniversary Model

To mark its anniversary, an all-new model will make its debut in the first quarter of 2014. That model, the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, will be joined by the smaller Tahoe as well as the similar GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. All four models will preserve the body-on-frame truck characteristics that have long defined this line. Unibody construction? Don’t count on it for many more years.

The release of the next generation Chevrolet Suburban comes as large SUV sales continue to rise. This, despite gas prices that are well above $3 per gallon across the country, approaching or topping $4 per gallon in some states. Through the first six months of this year, Chevrolet Suburban sales are up 16 percent, keeping pace with industry-wide growth.

GM is bullish about its big SUVs, profitable vehicles that maintain a loyal customer base. These vehicles are popular with large families, outdoor enthusiasts and are oftentimes marshaled as fleet vehicles, providing the livery support that many companies want. Said Dan Amman, GM executive vice president and CFO, “This is an important and profitable segment and we have set the bar high to ensure we provide our customers with great quality and performance they expect and deserve.”

Direct Injection Small Block V-8

The standard engine for the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban is GM’s small-block V-8 displacing at 5.3 liters. This engine makes 355 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 383 foot-pounds of torque at 4,100 rpm. It features direct fuel injection with cylinder deactivation, the latter shuts down four cylinders at highway cruising speed to conserve gasoline. This engine is teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Chevrolet Suburban adds 14 inches to the Tahoe’s 116-inch wheelbase and is 224 inches long. That’s 20 more inches than the Tahoe. The width for both vehicles is 80.5 inches; height comes in at 74.4 inches. Chevrolet Suburban curb weight ranges from 5,576 to 5,815 pounds, shedding just over 100 pounds in the 4×2 model while maintaining nearly the same weight as the current 4×4 Suburban.

Chevrolet Suburban Amenities and Options

The twelfth generation Chevrolet Suburban brings in many new features including keyless entry with push-button start, an eight-inch color screen with the latest version of Chevrolet MyLink, up to six ports and six power outlets including a three-prong 110-volt outlet, an available rear seat entertainment system with dual screens and a Blu-Ray DVD player, fold flat second- and third-row seats, and a conversation mirror.

A 360-degree radar system is also new, part of a safety package that includes crash avoidance and passenger protection. Other safety features included or available are: forward collision alert, front parking assist, lane departure warning with lane keeping assist, rear traffic cross alert and adaptive cruise control. A center stack airbag, unique to GM, will be included with both the Tahoe and Suburban.

The exterior is marked by the latest Chevrolet truck/SUV fascia and includes projector-beam headlamps. Choose the LTZ edition and high-intensity discharge headlamps and light-emitting diode daytime running lamps are included.

GM says that the next-generation Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe is quieter than the current edition with improved steering and braking feel. This model features a stronger frame, a wider rear track, magnetic ride control with the LTZ edition, standard 18-inch wheels and available 20- and 22-inch wheels, variable-assist power steering, and four-wheel disc brakes.

Made in Texas, USA

GM taps its assembly plant in Arlington, Texas, to build its large Chevrolet and GMC SUVs. That plant will begin production of the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban later this year, continuing a long string of full-bodied SUVs that have played an integral part in the North American auto industry.
