About the 2021 Genesis GV80

August 11, 2020 by admin 2 Comments

Genesis gains its first SUV.

The Genesis GV80 breaks new ground for the marque, delivering standard
5-passenger seating with available 7-passenger seating.

Hyundai’s Genesis brand has three sedans to show for it, but we’re still waiting the debut of its first utility vehicle. Fortunately, that wait is nearing an end as this luxury marque intends to release the GV80 SUV this fall.

When the GV80 arrives it will face stiff competition from well-established BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus models. But just as Genesis has shown no hesitancy with rolling out its trio of sedans, the all-new GV80 should find a place in the market.

Here are some important facts about the Genesis GV80:

1. Seoul debut. The GV80 made its global debut in January at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) west of Seoul. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 global pandemic soon followed and forced the cancellation of the New York International Auto Show in April where it would have made its North American debut. Design studios in Korea, Germany, and the United States collaborated on developing the new model.

2. A competitive starting price. Genesis prices the GV80 from $49,925, including a $1,025 destination fee. No competitor starts this low with most models costing from two to tens of thousands of dollars more. Its top price comes in around $72,000 in a segment where $90,000 or more for a fully loaded model is possible.

The 14.5-inch touch-screen display is fetching on all counts.

3. Two gasoline engines, no diesel. In Korea, Genesis showcase a GV80 with a diesel engine. Unfortunately, that engine isn’t destined for America. Instead, the base engine is turbocharged gas 2.5-liter that routes power to the rear wheels utilizing an 8-speed automatic transmission. Also available is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. An 8-speed automatic transmission is also standard. Both options feature available all-wheel drive (a $1,850 upgrade). An electronic limited-slip rear differential is included with the top trim. The preliminary performance numbers are as follows: 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque for the standard engine and 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque with the V6.

4. Wheels and suspension. The GV80 rides on standard 20-inch alloy wheels set within all-season radials. You’ll find 22-inch wheels with the top trim. Also available is an adjustable suspension system that supplies a softer ride on the top-trim Prestige.

5. Synthetic or real leather seats. The standard GV80 model comes with imitation leather or real hides. The top-trim Prestige trim (Standard and Advanced are the other two) features leather seats. We like that 12-way and heated front seats are standard. Ventilation and a heated steering wheel are included with the Advanced trim while the Prestige trim adds heated rear seats. Other features include wood trim and velvet suede headliner.

6. Leading-edge tech gear. Technology and luxury go hand in hand. That’s true with most models and the GV80 does not disappoint. Resting on top of the dashboard above the center stack is a huge 14.5-inch split touch-screen display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, Bluetooth, and a complement of USB ports are just a few of the many tech features present. Among the upgrades are a Lexicon audio system and a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument cluster.

Unique styling elements set the GV80 apart from the Genesis sedans.

7. Loaded with standard driver-assist gear. On the safety front, the GV80 has the features customers want and expect. Every model comes with automatic high beams, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Rear automatic emergency braking comes with the Prestige trim only.

More to Follow

Once the GV80 debuts, we’ll see an update to the G80 sedan. In fact, the two share a common platform. Two additional Genesis models are planned, including a second SUV. We also expect that Genesis will get its first electric vehicle, although we’re not certain what body style is planned for this all-electric vehicle.

Genesis G70: Affordable, Luxury Sedan

July 21, 2020 by admin 1 Comment

Genesis is now firmly established as a luxury marque, with three sedans to choose from. This fall, its first SUV arrives, giving the brand the volume vehicle it needs. Within a few more years, the Genesis lineup should number six distinct models, including an electric vehicle.

We recently drove the G70, the smallest of the three sedans and the one we see as probably the strongest threat to established European players such as the BMW 4 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

2020 Genesis G70 Review

The 2020 Genesis G70 starts at $35,450, plus a $995 freight charge. It comes with standard rear-wheel drive and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Models equipped with the available turbocharged V6 engine and all-wheel drive cost $46,650. For 2019, one year after its introduction, the G70 is unchanged except for equipment shuffling.

Exterior

Genesis is finding its way in the luxury sphere just fine, thank you very much. There is a connection between all three sedans, but each one utilizes unique grilles and LED accent lighting touches. Still, the overall look is stately, with sporty highlights quickly evident.

Our test 3.3T supplied the best blend of luxury and sportiness with its elegant lighting, long wheelbase, short overhangs, boomerang side vent trim, and red Brembo brake calipers that punctuate the 19-inch sport wheels set within summer tires. Otherwise, the standard features include 18-inch wheels, twin-tipped exhaust tips, heated side mirrors, and an automatic opening trunk.

Interior

It is a stretch to say the G70 seats five people, but it is common to offer seatbelts for a handful of passengers in this class. Nevertheless, the G70 offers excellent seating for two with supportive and comfortable seats up front and a bench seat in the rear. Rear legroom is very tight, especially when the front seats are pushed back. Ideally, those seats will hold two youngsters – if you need room for four or five adults, the G80 is the far better choice.

One thing we’re thankful is that the bolstering for the G70 isn’t overwrought – it is just right. On the sport trim the driver’s seat features power side bolsters, which allows for the customization you want. That’s preferable over seats with hard, inflexible bolsters (here’s looking at you Recaro) that offer a take it or leave it proposition.

Opt for the available Prestige package and the quilted leather seats will impress. The red contrast stitching on the black leather is especially fetching. The metal-covered pedals add sportiness. Overall, the interior is inviting, sporty, and sophisticated. We like that Genesis did important things such as tilting the instruments panel and center stack toward the driver. It renders a small cockpit vibe and that’s something we like.

Safety

The 2020 G70 comes with a decent roster of driver-assist safety features. The standard features include high beam assist, forward collision avoidance assistance with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and smart cruise control with full stop and go.

Two available features worth considering are the surround-view monitor and the heads-up display. The first one utilizes four cameras to expand the driver’s viewpoint significantly while also rendering a bird’s eyes view for ease of parking. The second one simply takes the important driver information, including speed, navigation, and safety alerts, and projects that into a full-color display on the windshield.

Technology

We’re impressed with the tech offerings accompanying the 2020 G70. For starters, it comes with a 6-speaker audio system with satellite radio and HD Radio, an 8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, and two USB ports. The standard features should satisfy the majority of shoppers.

That said, the upgrades are noteworthy and include a 15-speaker Lexicon audio system, a wireless charging pad, and navigation. The only missing ingredient is a 110-volt power outlet.

Performance

Genesis supplies two engine choices with the 2020 G70, beginning with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The second choice is a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. Both work with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and rev-matching.

Of special note is that the transmission is a “shift-by-wire” arrangement. That means there are no mechanical parts connecting the transmission to the wheels. Instead, the computer signals each shift point.

What about a manual transmission? Is one offered? Happily, that answer is yes, although it is only offered with the base engine and represents a $3,500 add on. This feature, though, should gladden the heart of enthusiasts as it also includes a limited-slip differential. We’re happy it is still offered as key competitors, including BMW and Mercedes-Benz, no longer offer three-pedal fun.

Upgrading to the V6 brings in a few performance extras, including a sport-tuned suspension, a Brembo performance braking system, and a limited-slip differential. Our rear-wheel-drive tester came with the V6 and its special performance benefits.

The G70 V6 supplies excellent step-off acceleration and ample passing power. The twin-turbo arrangement means quick spooling with inconsequential lagtime. This was the second time in as many years we’ve driven a G70 with the engine upgrade and continue to enjoy all its advantages, including its sub-5-second 0-60 mph time.

We found the steering feedback precise, with improvements realized through its various drive modes. This sedan manages very well and strikes a near-perfect balance between ride and handling. You’ll attack corners with ease and pull out with confidence. The beefy Brembo brakes bring this sedan to a quick stop.

We also realized the G70 matches the BMW 3/4 Series in every driving department – it is tossable, fun to drive, and fast. We doubt the standard engine is a slouch. That it still offers a manual gearbox option is reason to seriously consider that particular powertrain.

Competitive Set

The entry-level sedan market remains a strong one with nearly every player represented. Beyond the BMW 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, this class offers the Cadillac CT4, Jaguar XE, Volvo S60, Audi A4, Lincoln MKZ, Lexus IS, Infiniti Q50, and the Acura ILX. The G70 shares its mechanical underpinnings with the Kia Stinger, but its in-house competitor isn’t a luxury model.

Our Recommendation

We could tell you to get the standard model with rear-wheel drive (and opt for the manual gearbox if so inclined) and call it a day. That said, it’s kind of hard to overlook the 3.3T and all the power it brings to bear.

To make things easier on you, choose the standard model if a car such as the BMW 330i is on your list. Otherwise, if you’re considering a BMW M4 coupe or convertible (sorry, there is no M3 sedan), then the 3.3T makes sense.

Ultimate Luxury: 2020 Genesis G90

May 26, 2020 by admin 1 Comment

One of the descriptions for “genesis” is “beginning” and that’s an appropriate name for Hyundai’s luxury marque.

The Genesis G90 was the brand’s first standalone model when it launched in 2017. Three years later and this full-size sedan is currently sold alongside the midsize G80 and the compact G70 sedans. A GV80 SUV rolls out later this year as Genesis begins shifting its focus to the utilities.

The Genesis G90 is a competitive product in a niche segment. This big sedan offers high style and a limousine-like riding experience. The G90 doesn’t have years of prestige to build on like its German and Lexus competitors, but it makes a strong effort. Whereas the others can become very costly, the G90 holds its own – the most expensive model costs less than $80,000. Its fully loaded competitors top out well above $100,000.

2020 Genesis G90 Review

Genesis offers the 2020 Enclave in two configurations: 3.3T ($72,200) and 5.0 ($75,700). Add $1,025 for the destination charge.

Both configurations come with standard rear-wheel drive. Upgrading to all-wheel drive adds $2,500. There are no package offerings with any G90.

Exterior

If it’s a long canvas you want, the G90 delivers. This sedan is sleek with a modern design, marked by an oversized, diamond-shaped gaping grille. The look is appealing, but it’s also controversial. Some might say the grille is polarizing.

Genesis makes great use of LEDs as they separate the frontal lighting and even make an appearance along the sides within the ornamentation which is affixed just ahead of the front doors. It’s a dramatic touch you’ll notice anytime you unlock the doors.

The G90 has a fair amount of chrome – on the wheels, surrounding the windows, and across the rocker panels, and wrapping the base of the rear. Inasmuch as the grille may surprise some, it’s the rear deck design that can be difficult to accept. The roofline falls to the trunk, almost like a hatchback, but not quite. The trunk itself is taller than most, giving the G90 a bustle-back look popularized in the 1930s and again 50 years later in the Cadillac Seville, Lincoln Versailles, and the Chrysler Imperial. But it’s not a clear-cut design and that’s what makes it so curious.

Interior

The largest luxury sedans offer excellent space for five. But don’t blame the rear passengers if they prefer to limit their numbers to two each as they spread out and enjoy their space. And who could blame them? Each of the outboard spots makes a strong run in seat comfort versus the front row chairs.

Credit Genesis with choosing only the finest materials and carefully crafting the cabin with them. Fine leathers, rich woods, and chrome touches underscore that it means business. And they’re carefully laid out with the pleasing visual feel and touch you’d expect in this class.

It’s the special touches that get noticed too, including the analog clock, the deep alcove for the cell phone that also includes a wireless charger, the split-opening center storage compartment, and the elegant interior lighting.
Now back to the rear seat – what’s odd is that it doesn’t fold down to supply access to the trunk. That’s probably not a big deal in this segment.

Safety

One thing we noticed about some of the G90’s competitors (with Lexus the lone exception), is that they charge extra for the advanced driver-assist safety technologies we expect in our cars. Not only that, they’re often bundled with other features and that gets silly and expensive.

Genesis takes a wise approach to the market. The G90 comes with such features as active lane control, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and a surround-view camera system.

This year, Genesis upped its game by adding lane-centering management, automatic emergency braking for reverse gear, and an upgraded collision warning system. Thus, you’ll find all the major features included.

Technology

Just as Genesis supplies a strong roster of standard safety equipment, likewise the brand knocks things out of the park with technology, beginning with a 12.3-inch display. That’s the size you’ll find in the most expensive models of this day.

A 17-speaker, 900-watt Lexicon audio system is standard as is the previously mentioned wireless charging pad. Genesis includes subscription-free HD Radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, and multiple USB ports. The 5.0 model adds the rear entertainment system and cooled outboard seats.

Performance

Genesis could have supplied one engine choice with the G90 and that would have satisfied most shoppers. Instead, we have two engine choices and the differences between the two are small.

It all begins with a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine with a rating of 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. The other choice is a 5.0-liter V8 engine with 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Our Genesis—supplied test model had the turbo, although we’ve driven cars equipped with the V8. Our finding is that they deliver similar performance, with the V8 supplying an edge in step-off acceleration, while the V6 nearly matches it in passing power. Both engines work with a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission.

There is another factor shoppers should consider: available all-wheel drive. Yes, the standard rear-wheel-drive system does great with the adaptive dampers benefitting the buttery ride. Choose all-wheel drive and you’ll notice an improvement in handling, particularly on twisty roads and when cornering. No, the G90 on account of its size doesn’t have the handling chops of the sporty G70, but that’s not its design: comfort is. We’d gladly put the G90 against all comers in the ride comfort department.

If there is anything we’d like to see improve it would be in its fuel economy. No matter the configuration, the G90 drinks its gasoline – you’d be hard-pressed to average 20 mpg on most trips.

Competitive Set

Not many luxury marques offer traditional full-size sedans these days. From Germany, we have the Audi A8L, BMW 7 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The Lexus LS is the lone big sedan offering from Japan.

The U.S. offerings aren’t nearly as large and include the Lincoln Continental. Like the Continental, the Cadillac CT6 is another model to consider.

Our Recommendation

You can’t go wrong with a G90 in either configuration. We give a slight edge to the V8 over the turbocharged V6, but the differences between the two are simply quite small. As pointed out, the 5.0 adds the rear entertainment system and cooled outboard seats. Opt for all-wheel drive if you live in a snowy climate.

All in all, the G90 establishes does a laudable job in fulfilling its mission. Its price point may be its greatest appeal, especially as it bundles nearly everything you want without charging extra.

The Head-Turning, Attention-Getting Hyundai Palisade

September 10, 2019 by admin 14 Comments

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade once again ups Hyundai’s luxury game.

It’s been a decade since Hyundai ventured beyond its mainstream status by issuing a stream of upscale and performance models. The Equus and Genesis sedans brought a Hyundai luxury level unknown to Americans, while the Genesis coupe demonstrated the brand’s performance chops.

All three models are gone, with just one reassigned to Hyundai’s new Genesis luxury marque. The only remaining upscale model was the Azera sedan, but it, too, has been discontinued.

Beginning this model year, Hyundai once again ventures into an upscale territory in the form of its three-row, midsize Palisade crossover. The new vehicle replaces the outgoing Santa Fe XL, but its platform is derived from that earlier model.

Perhaps the most noteworthy fact about the 2020 Palisade is that it delivers many luxurious amenities and advanced technologies for a mainstream price. While it is apparent Hyundai has the Buick Enclave, Subaru Ascent, and Mazda CX-9 in mind as natural competitors, don’t be surprised if this model is cross-shopped by Acura, Lincoln, and Volvo owners.

The all-new Palisade is available in SE, SEL, and Limited trims.

Hyundai Palisade Overview

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade is a front-wheel drive, midsize crossover utility vehicle with room for seven or eight. All models come with a V6 engine and an automatic transmission. Shoppers may opt for all-wheel drive.

Hyundai offers the Palisade in three trims: SE ($32,645), SEL ($34,595), and Limited ($45,795). These prices include the $1,095 destination charge. Choose all-wheel drive and you’ll add $1,700 to your cost.

Only the middle SEL trim offers package choices. A Convenience Package ($2,200) swaps out the middle-row captain’s chairs for a bench seat, increasing passenger seating capacity to eight. Other upgrades include front parking sensors, an automatic leveling rear suspension, LED taillights, a hands-free liftgate, a wireless phone charger, additional USB ports, and a 115-volt power outlet.

Choosing the Premium Package ($2,400) requires opting for the Convenience Package. This package adds such features as Bi-LED headlamps, leather seating surfaces, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, a power-folding third-row seat, and premium materials on the dashboard and armrests.

Two other packages are also available. A Power Sunroof Package ($900) brings in the sunroof and LED interior lights and map lamps. This package does not include a corresponding upgrade. A Drive Guidance Package ($1,250) also builds on the Convenience Package. Here, you’ll find a navigation system and a 10.25-inch screen, highway drive assist, satellite and HD Radio, and a Blue Link connected car system.

The top view of this photo shows the Palisade’s dashboard. The bottom view zooms in on the center console and its unusual gear shift display.

Hyundai Palisade Highlights

There is much to consider about the Hyundai Palisade. Our driving impressions follow, but in the meantime, we’ll explore this model’s highlights.

1. Premium styling, mainstream price.

We’re impressed by the Palisade’s look, which is a considerable improvement over the outgoing Santa Fe XL. The front fascia is dominated by an oversized grille with a thick chrome surround. At the corners are LED lighting elements, including extended vertical daytime running lights honed in by stacked headlights. An unusual split lower grille adds sportiness and flair. The Palisade’s profile features beautiful lines and body sculpting, a thick “C” pillar, and multispoke alloy wheels. The rear fascia is no less impressive with its take on LED lighting. The dual exhaust ports are coupled and located on the right, adding yet another sporty touch. This styling reflects the Limited edition, our test model. That a fully loaded model can be had for under $50,000 should capture the attention of shoppers desiring a luxury SUV.

2. Roomy, upscale interior.

We haven’t seen an eight-passenger Hyundai model before, thus the Palisade breaks new ground. It does so in a segment dominated by models offering eight-seat passenger space. Separating the Hyundai Palisade from the pack is its modern and upscale interior. And that cabin is nothing less than spectacular, especially in Limited garb. Cloth seats are standard with the SE and SEL (leather is optional with the SEL), while Limited models feature quilted and stitched premium leather. Heated and cooled second-row seats and window shades add much comfort. As for the third row, it’s comfortable too, but like nearly every other model in this class (the Volkswagen Atlas an important exception), is more comfortable for children. Not so much for adults.

Quilted leather seats adorn the Limited model.

3. One powertrain and your choice of drivetrain.

All Palisades are governed by a 3.8-liter V6 engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Rated at 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, this engine offers just a smidgen of extra power over the 3.3-liter V6 powering the Santa Fe XL. Notably, the XL comes in at 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. Each Palisade trim comes with standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. Both models have a 5,000-pound towing capacity when properly equipped.

4. Enhanced tech features rivaling the top luxury models.

Hyundai delivers few surprises with the Palisades’s standard tech features and that’s a good thing. You’ll find an 8-inch touchscreen display bundles with an audio system, Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone compatibility, Bluetooth, and five USB ports. It is in the Limited trim where Hyundai pulls out all the stops. Here, you’ll find a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, two third-row USB ports, and a 115-volt power outlet. Also, the Limited adds a few features that are also available with the SEL. These include a 10.25-inch color display, navigation, satellite and HD Radio, BlueLink connected car services, and expanded Bluetooth capabilities (for connecting up to two devices).

5. Standard and available advanced safety features.

Hyundai certainly has safety features in mind with the 2020 Palisade, including standard automatic headlights, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with full stop and go, trailer sway control, and driver attention warning. But it is with the middle trim where the automaker ups its game as this model adds blind-spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, and safe exit assist. Further, highway drive assist and parking distance warning (front) are optional.

Fold-down the third-row seat for expanded cargo space.

Behind the Wheel

Hit the road and the Palisade delivers sufficient, although not spectacular power. It steadily accelerates from a dead stop and when pressing the pedal to the floor, this SUV responds satisfactorily. That said, we wonder how well this powertrain would manage under a full load and when pulling thousands of pounds of trailering weight behind it.

Models equipped with all-wheel drive, such as our test vehicle benefit from power sent to the rear wheels under certain conditions. Consider this an advantage that manifests itself when roads are wet. You can even activate a “lock” mode to ensure power remains evenly split between the front and the rear.

For a high-profile vehicle, the Palisade stays relatively poised, including when tackling twisty roads. It stays properly centered with body roll minimized through the turns. Hyundai’s all-wheel-drive system includes torque vectoring, which helps mitigate roll. That said, you can expect front-wheel-drive versions to deliver loads of roll.

There is one thing we need to point out about the Palisade and that is its push-button transmission system. Located at the base of the center console immediately below the controls for the audio system, this arrangement is unusual, especially for a Hyundai model. To the right of the transmission layout are various switches and knobs controlling drivetrain connect, drive modes, and other behavior (i.e., descent control, trailering, and slippery conditions).

A large V6 engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission combine to move this SUV.

Auto Trends Recommends

As much as we were smitten with our top-trim all-wheel-drive Limited model, we think the SEL trim is a great place to start. Opt for all-wheel drive for its superior handling characteristics, then choose the Convenience and Drive Guidance packages to complete your build. At this point, your cost is $40,645, which is quite reasonable. Special military, first responders, and college grad incentives may lower your final cost accordingly. Either way, there is big value waiting in Hyundai’s most luxurious SUV to date.

Raise the Stakes: 2019 Genesis G70

October 25, 2018 by admin 6 Comments

With the G70, Genesis now has a trio of luxury sedans to consider.

2019 Genesis G70

Things are getting serious at Genesis Motors. When launching the upscale brand in 2015 with two sedans, the Hyundai Motor Group promised to populate its luxury marque with six models.

This year, Genesis released its third model, the compact G70 sedan, making its strongest case yet as a luxury manufacturer. Indeed, where the midsize G80 and full-size G90 sedans established toeholds in their respective segments, the G70 is going after the heart of the matter, in this case, models such as the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Audi A4, among others.

Yes, Genesis is delivering its sedans first, with two SUVs to follow. A sixth model, perhaps a hybrid sports car, will flesh out Genesis’ product line.

And if you think Genesis Motors will rest on its laurels come 2020, you have another thing coming. The Korean luxury brand aims to take on the world, and will likely do battle with Lexus, Jaguar, Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti, and other luxury brands moving forward.

2019 Genesis G70 Overview

The G70 may be the best example of Genesis’ bona fides, a sedan with a strong presence and the luxury and performance chops to back it up. It is Genesis’ riskiest model yet, as it invades territory long dominated by a few players. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have the strongest entries (and they’re also new for 2019), with competitors such as the Lexus IS, Cadillac ATS and the Jaguar XE offering a modest presence.

2019 Genesis G70Genesis offers the 2019 G70 in five trims, with each one based on a particular engine and drivetrain. The base model comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This rear-wheel-drive model starts at $34,900. Add $995 for the destination fee.

The second model is the all-wheel-drive version of the base model. This one starts at $36,900. Yes, there is a six-speed manual gearbox available with the base rear-wheel-drive model only. Here, your cost is $37,900.

The fourth trim is powered by a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This one retails for $43,750. If you prefer all-wheel drive, then your cost is $45,750.

2019 Genesis G70You’ll also find various package upgrades, including 2.0T Elite Package ($5,000), 2.0T Dynamic Package ($9,000; $8,000 on the all-wheel drive) and 2.0T Sport Package ($10,000; $9,000 on the all-wheel drive). You’ll also find a 3.3T Elite Package ($1,750), 3.3T Dynamic Package ($4,250) and 3.3T Sport Package ($5,750) choices. We’ll mention items from those packages as we discuss various other features moving forward.

Importantly, the 2019 Genesis G70 matches the starting price of the 2019 BMW 3 Series. The G70’s top-end pricing is lower than the BMW and its amenities list goes deeper. What it doesn’t offer to U.S. customers is diesel or hybrid variants. We think the latter will eventually become commonly found in Genesis’ future product plans.

A Matter of Style

You may have heard that the Genesis G70 is related to the Kia Stinger. This is true. The corporate cousins share a common platform, although the G70 is slightly smaller than the Kia. It also takes its own styling direction — the silhouettes of the two models are quite dissimilar.

Up front, the G70 has a strong fascia, amplified by a gaping grille covered in mesh. Sleek wing-like headlamps touch the top of the grille. Large dugouts for the lower intake, stress this model’s aggressive demeanor.

2019 Genesis G70The G70’s profile features a long hood, a high beltline and a sloping roofline leading to a notched rear deck. Important design elements include boomerang accented side vents, which are common to sports cars, sport alloy wheels set within performance tires, red Brembo brakes and just enough body sculpting to keep things interesting.

From the rear, the fascia features an oversized trunk lip spoiler that serves as a bulge transecting the length of the trunk. Wraparound tail lamps, dual chrome exhaust tips, and a diffuser complete the look.

Yes, there are some differences between trims. My description applies to the top-trim model, which was my test vehicle and topped $52,000.

Standard exterior features include automatic headlights, high beam assist, LED lights, heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips, and a hands-free automatic opening trunk. Options include full LED headlights, Genesis logo approach lights, 19-inch wheels, summer tires, and a limited-slip differential

2019 Genesis G70Inside, the G70 delivers an elegant, yet straightforward cabin. It isn’t cluttered with knobs and switches or overrun by complex lines or secreted compartments. Much like the BMW 3 Series, the layout features analog readouts, sizable round dials, and a minimalist persona.

The quilted leather seats are the eye candy of choice for the G70. The visual appeal is complemented by passenger comfort, with the front seats offering a proper amount of bolstering and support. The rear seat is comfortable too, but like the BMW, legroom comes at a premium. Unless the driver or front passenger elect to have their seats pulled forward, you’ll soon realize that the rear seat is best left for children.

Standard interior features include a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, imitation leather seats, power front seats with driver power lumbar support, climate control and full power accessories. Optional features include alloy pedals, Nappa leather seating surfaces with sport quilting, heated and ventilated front seats, and aluminum trim.

Technology and Safety

Some luxury manufacturers make obtaining technology expensive. That is if you want such add-ons as Apple CarPlay, expect to pay $300 or more for the service. Most mainstream manufacturers include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for no charge. The same can be said for Genesis.

The standard color display measures seven inches. You’ll also find a rearview camera with parking guidelines, Bluetooth connectivity, a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio and HD Radio, and three USB ports. Optional features include a 15-speaker Lexicon audio system and full navigation.

2019 Genesis G70

Driver-assist safety technologies build on any model’s core safety systems, including brake assist, a suite of airbags, and crash test scores. We don’t yet have test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but we’re confident this Genesis will do fine.

All models come with forward collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, blind-spot collision warning with rear cross-traffic collision warning, smart (adaptive) cruise control with stop and go, driver attention warning, and high beam assist. This is a remarkable suite of advanced safety features and they’re included at no extra charge. Much of the competition is gradually adding features to the standard equipment list, but Genesis has the full package included.

On the Road With the 2019 Genesis G70

What flavor is your Genesis G70? My preferred model is the middle trim with the base engine and a manual transmission. I’m of the school where “rowing your own” is the preferred choice. When I’ve driven a BMW 3 Series with a manual gearbox, you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

Alas, Genesis sent the top-trim model my way. But I have no complaints with that decision whatsoever — it just means I’m not able to make comments about rev shifting and clutch uptake. In any case, BMW and Mercedes-Benz no longer offer manuals with their compact sedans, a decision that disappoints some enthusiasts to no end. Paddle shifters, anyone?

2019 Genesis G70If you opt for the base G70 engine, you’ll have 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque at the ready. These are good numbers, although if you want stronger performance to go with adroit maneuvering and a firm ride, an engine upgrade is in order.

That’s exactly what was under the hood of my test model — a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. It delivers an outstanding 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds or two full seconds faster than the standard engine.

One of the first things I noticed about the G70 is its fairly hushed, but still aggressive exhaust note on ignition. The low hum suggests something strong is at play, a fact confirmed by engaging the gas pedal. Copious amounts of power is at the ready and quickly tapped with no hesitation felt.

While power is certainly a G70 attribute, where this model’s strength lies is in its handling. Take the Genesis on a twisty road and it remains poised and stays planted on the sharpest turns. Indeed, the combination of Michelin sport tires and excellent suspension tuning ensure success in all your driving endeavors.

The G70 reminds me of the 3 Series in a very important way — it makes most any driver look skilled when entering and leaving corners or while hanging with the twisties. By the way, rear-wheel-drive models get a limited-slip differential.

Is there any downside to the G70? Yes. And that would be its harsh-at-times ride. There is no escaping the fact that when the Sport drive mode is chosen, the ride loses whatever softness is left, while also supplying a real connection with the road. That connection includes magnifying bumps and other road insults, which means you’ll want to choose smooth pavement wherever it can be found.

Parting Thoughts: 2019 Genesis G70

Mission Accomplished. Or at least, Mission Compact Luxury Sedan.

Genesis Motors rounds out its sedan line in an important way, delivering a model that should attract entry-level luxury model shoppers. Yes, Genesis absolutely needs to transition to SUVs, but you have to admire the brand for concentrating on its core competencies before launching an SUV.

Aiding the G70’s cause are robust services that go with it, including complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles with corresponding valet service. That service includes picking up and delivering the G70 for scheduled maintenance and supplying a courtesy replacement vehicle. You’ll also find three years of connected car services, satellite radio along with regular multimedia and navigation updates.

On the Road With a 2018 Genesis G80

September 6, 2018 by admin 8 Comments

Luxury meets value with the Genesis G80

2018 Genesis G80
The Genesis G80 is available in three trims. It has three engine choices and an automatic transmission.

Hyundai launched the Genesis luxury brand launched in 2016 with plans to steadily expand it to six models. Carved out of Hyundai, this marque is comprised of G70 (compact), G80 (midsize) and G90 (full-size) sedans. Two SUVs will soon follow; a third model of a not-yet-determined body style should arrive in 2021.

Genesis competes with a host of luxury brands, including Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. Its traditional rear-wheel-drive architecture gives it the right to take on the best models in the business.

Recently, a Genesis G80 sedan was delivered for my inspection. It is a model I’m very familiar with, both under the Genesis moniker and when it was marketed as the Hyundai Genesis. I’ve always liked this sedan, which is stylish, generously appointed and attainable.

2018 Genesis G80

2018 Genesis G80 Overview

The 2018 Genesis G80 seats five and comes with standard rear-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. This model has three engine choices — each one is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Pay a visit to the Genesis G80 splash page and you’ll find 10 trim choices for your consideration. In reality, there are three trims, with each one corresponding to the engine choice. Thus, the standard prices are as follows: 3.8 ($41,750); 3.3T or Sport ($55,250); and 5.0 ($57,000). Add $975 for the destination charge and another $2,500 for all-wheel drive.

The 3.8 is where the package options kick in. The Premium Package ($5,000) builds on the standard features, adding LED foglights, a power tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof, a Lexicon 14-speaker surround sound audio, a 7-inch color LCD multi-information display, wireless device charging (front) Qi standard, front and rear parking sensors, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, and manual rear side window shades.

You can also upgrade to the Ultimate Package ($10,100), which builds on the standard trim and Premium Package. Here, you’ll find shift-by-wire, full LED headlights with dynamic bending light (DBL) technology, premium leather seating surfaces, a power driver seat cushion extender and side bolster, genuine matte-finish wood trim and aluminum trim, a heads-up display, a multi-view camera system, a 9.2” HD touchscreen, Lexicon 17-speaker surround sound audio, a power trunk lid, and a dual mode front vent control and CO2 Sensor.

2018 Genesis

Your Choice of Engines

Credit Genesis with giving the G80 three engine choices and very good ones at that.

2018 Genesis G80The standard engine displaces 3.8 liters, generating 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. It is also the most efficient one too, making 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. This one runs on regular gasoline.

A twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque is the second engine choice. Models equipped with this engine make 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway and take premium gasoline.

The third engine choice is the lone V8, which displaces 5.0 liters and has an output of 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The EPA-estimated fuel economy comes in at 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. You’ll fuel with premium gasoline too.

Equipped the Way You Want

Genesis is big on value and that’s evident by just how well this model is equipped. We’ll look at the three main trims and what you get with each one.

Genesis G80 3.8

The G80’s roster of standard equipment is strong, beginning with the exterior.

2018 Genesis G80This model comes with Bi-Xenon HID headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRL), high beam assist, power-folding and heated dual side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, 18-inch alloy wheels and a hands-free open trunk.

Inside, the G80 has push-button start to go with keyless entry. This model also comes with a leather-wrapped and power-controlled tilt-and-telescopic steering column, leather seats, 12-way power front seats with dual automatic climate control, and an automatic-dimming rearview mirror. A drive mode select allows you to choose between normal, eco and sport modes.

Among tech features, the 2018 G80 includes a 7-speaker audio system with satellite radio and a CD player.

2018 Genesis G80Genesis also includes an 8-inch color touch-screen with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, Bluetooth and two USB ports. Genesis also provides three years complimentary connected car services and three years SiriusXM Travel Link services.

Among safety tech you’ll find a rearview camera with parking guidelines, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and driver attention alert. Genesis also includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

Genesis G80 Sport (3.3T)

2018 Genesis G80Besides the twin-turbo V6 engine, the Genesis G80 Sport adds such features as a panoramic power glass tilt and slide sunroof and a vehicle anti-theft system with engine mobilizer.

Inside, this trim has a power rear sunshade. All other tech and safety features remain the same.

Genesis G80 5.0

The V8 engine is the most significant difference at this trim level. The other one is the addition of front fog lights.

On the Road

My test Genesis G80 3.8 with rear-wheel drive came with zero options. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t well equipped as noted above. It just means you can find a midsize luxury sedan in the low-$40,000 range and that alone is good news.

What you have with the standard model is a quiet, comfortable riding sedan. Step-off acceleration is adequate and passing power is satisfactory. The transmission is properly matched with this engine, shifting through cogs quickly with no hunting detected.

The steering is light to the touch with limited feedback. On twisty roads and when pulling out of corners, its lack of handling precision becomes evident. Not in a disturbing way, but as a matter of fact. And that fact is a sedan like the BMW 5 Series is still difficult to beat.

Hours of backcountry road traveling gave me a good feel for what the Genesis G80 is all about. It is not a corner carver, but it acquits itself everywhere else and that’s what customers expect in this segment. In the G80, Genesis found what most customers want and delivers it.

2018 Genesis G80

Parting Thoughts: Genesis G80

The 2018 Genesis G80 delivers solid value for the segment. A number of competing models start around $50,000 and usually offer a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the base engine. The Audi A6, Cadillac CTS and Lexus GS are three such models that come to mind.

Notably, when comparing this model to the Lexus, there is a near $5,000 price difference between Genesis and Lexus and even then you’re comparing a V6 engine to a small turbo four. Choose the GS 350 F Sport and you’ll pay $52,260 or just over $10,000 more than the G80 for a V6 that also makes 311 horsepower. Sure, the Lexus has better handling, but in all other areas, these two sedans are nearly equal.

As for the model of your choosing, adding the Ultimate Package gives you a well-equipped sedan, one that is priced like the Lexus, but with more features. Here, you get the most bang for the buck, although if enhanced performance is important to you, then you’ll look at the two other engine choices instead.

About the 2019 Genesis G70

September 1, 2018 by admin 6 Comments

Updated September 19, 2018, to include model year price information.

We have fresh information about the Genesis G70.

2019 Genesis G70
The 2019 Genesis G70 arrives this fall.

The 2019 Genesis G70 is one of three sedans sold by Hyundai’s luxury brand. It has several things we like, including standard rear-wheel drive, an available 6-speed manual gearbox and tough looks. Its arrival, though, comes as the market tilts heavily to SUVs.

Updates for 2019

The 2019 G70 is an all-new model. Its joins the midsize G80 and the large G90 sedans in rounding out Genesis’ sedan lineup. The next three models scheduled to appear in the Genesis portfolio include at least two SUVs and one not-yet-announced body type. They can’t arrive fast enough as sedan sales are small.

Shopping for a 2019 Genesis G70

As a compact luxury sedan, the Genesis G70 takes on the industry’s strongest models, including the pacesetting BMW 3 Series. Other competitors in this segment include the Cadillac ATS, Lexus IS, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4 and the Infiniti Q50.

The Genesis G70 has room for five, although rear space is tight, especially concerning legroom. Its trunk is very small too, measuring just 11 cubic feet. That’s still larger than the 2018 ATS Sedan’s 10.4 cubic feet, but less than the 13 cubic feet in the Audi A4.

2019 Genesis G70

There are two engine choices available and both offer distinct power advantages. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine good for 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Also available is a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 engine with an output of 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque.

Both engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission. However, the base engine with rear-wheel drive supplies an optional 6-speed manual gearbox. That’s an increasingly uncommon option in this segment. Besides standard rear-wheel drive, customers can choose all-wheel drive.

The most efficient G70 is the standard rear-wheel-drive model with the automatic transmission. This one earns 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. That’s a combined 3 mpg better than the manual. Opt for the V6 and your EPA-estimated fuel economy comes in as high as 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

2019 Genesis G70

Trims to Consider

Genesis offers the 2019 G70 2.0T in six trim levels: Advanced, Elite, Prestige, Dynamic, Sport and Sport M/T, while G70 3.3T variants are available in four trim levels: Advanced, Elite, Prestige and Sport.

Also, dual automatic climate control, a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with HomeLink, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, imitation leather seats, illuminated front vanity mirrors with sliding sun visors, a rear seat folding armrest with cup holders, and a front map light and pin light. Further, you’ll find a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, a rearview camera with parking guidelines, and steering wheel audio, cruise and phone controls.

You’ll also find HD Radio, three USB ports (two front, one rear), a 7-inch color LCD multi-information display, Genesis Connected Services telematics, an 8-inch display audio screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a rearview camera with parking guidelines

Advanced ($34,900 RWD, $36,900 AWD)

The above listed standard equipment is covered in this trim. Select the all-wheel-drive option and this model gains a heated steering wheel.

Choose the twin-turbo 3.3 engine and the price starts at $43,750 ($45,750 for all-wheel drive).

Elite ($39,900 RWD, $41,900 AWD)

Building on the Advanced trim, the Elite adds such features as full LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, power-folding, auto-dimming exterior mirrors with approach lights, and a sunroof. You’ll also find a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, leather seats, navigation and a 15-speaker Lexicon audio system.

Choose the twin-turbo 3.3 engine and the price starts at $45,500 ($47,500 for all-wheel drive).

Dynamic ($48,000 RWD, $50,000 AWD)

Building on the Prestige trim, the Dynamic model adds two performance elements: 19-inch alloy wheels with Michelin PS4 summer tires and a limited-slip differential for rear-wheel drive models only.

Sport ($49,500 RWD, $51,500 AWD)

The Sport level builds on the Dynamic trim and adds such exterior embellishments as a dark chrome grille, copper headlight accents and dark tint taillight covers.

Launch Editions

Genesis will offer a pair of launch editions. The Design begins at $48,750 and the Dynamic comes in at $50,750. Add $2,000 for all-wheel drive.

Standard safety features include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection (FCA), Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW), Rear Cross-traffic Collision Warning (RCCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go (SCC), High Beam Assist (HBA) and Driver Attention Warning (DAW).

2019 Genesis G70

Buyer’s Choice

We’re going to weasel out from selecting a recommended trim. Likely, your choice will have everything to do with the type of driver you are.

If performance is your passion, then the base engine with the manual gearbox may be right for you. That said, the V6 engine supplies the kick that takes the rear-wheel-drive version from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

Decisions, decisions…but the choices are quite good no matter how you look at it.

Genesis to Separate From Hyundai Showrooms

January 29, 2018 by admin 4 Comments

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury marque takes the next step.

Genesis Gangham
Genesis Gangham, the first standalone showroom for Hyundai’s luxury brand.

Launched in November 2015, the Genesis brand has quietly and steadily continued to transition away from Hyundai to stand on its own. Hyundai’s luxury marque is currently composed of just two models, with a third sedan on the way. By 2020, the Genesis nameplate should include six models — three sedans and three SUVs.

Standalone Genesis Showrooms

The big news right now has everything to do with the way the Genesis markets its products. Currently, Hyundai dealerships carry the Genesis, carving out showroom space to present its two models. Certainly, that’s not an ideal way to advance a luxury brand, something Hyundai Motors will rectify by awarding standalone Genesis dealerships to top-tier retailers.

The Hyundai-Genesis split follows a seven-year test of the brand with American consumers. Beginning with the Hyundai Genesis Sedan, followed by the Genesis Coupe and Hyundai Equus, consumer interest and acceptance was quickly confirmed. Indeed, the Genesis sedan quickly became one of the top sellers in the segment. Moreover, consumers expressed interest in a standalone brand, much in the same way Toyota maintains Lexus.

To begin the transition, Hyundai replaced the Equus with an all-new Genesis G90, while an updated Genesis sedan received the Genesis G80 name. However, the Genesis Coupe did not make the transition and ultimately Hyundai discontinued it. Even so, we may yet see a Genesis sport coupe at some point, but it isn’t a priority for the brand.

The first standalone Genesis showroom opened in early January in Korea. Dubbed “Genesis Gangham,” the new showroom sits in Seoul’s Samsung-dong, Gangnam-Gu, the city’s prime business district. The showroom features a “launch bay,” where the drive experience begins. There, shoppers have a choice of five test drive courses on public roads around the district.

Genesis G70 Sedan
The all-new Genesis G70 sedan arrives April 2018.

US Market Showrooms

As for the US market, Hyundai plans to give some of its 350 elite-level dealers priority to apply for standalone dealerships, according to Automotive News. For the 2019 model year, Hyundai dealers not making the cut will quit selling Genesis product, but will receive compensation from the automaker to cover inventory, training and equipment to service Genesis models and for helping raise Genesis awareness.

Genesis plans to award approximately 100 locations in 48 markets across the United States. Top markets include such major cities as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York as well as San Francisco, Miami and Washington, DC. Some markets will have just one Genesis showroom. Genesis will announce its initial franchise recipients in the coming months, requiring showrooms to open no later than the end of 2020.

New Genesis Product

As for the upcoming product, the compact G70 sedan is on sale in Korea and arrives in the US this Spring. The Genesis G70 targets such models as the BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

As for the first of three Genesis SUVs, the GV80 Fuel Cell Concept revealed at the 2017 New York International Auto Show likely points to what’s in store. That said, Auto Trends believes the main model will feature a conventional gas-powered drivetrain with a fuel cell or hybrid optional. Hyundai Motors is deeply invested in vehicle electrification, perhaps serving as variants on conventional models such as the GV80.

Strong Luxury Sales

Hyundai Motors’ “go slow” approach to growing the Genesis brand comes as US auto sales pulled back slightly in 2017, following seven consecutive years of growth. Luxury model growth has slowed also, but consumers continue to flock to many models with higher price points. Launching a new brand is an extremely expensive and laborious proposition, a cost Hyundai Motors’ will spread out for several years to come.

Midsize Luxury Sedan: 2017 Genesis G80

November 3, 2016 by admin 8 Comments

The Genesis G80 has arrived, a rebadged and upgraded version of the previous Hyundai Genesis Sedan. The new model takes direct aim at the midsize luxury sedan market and does so with available well-equipped trim choices at very competitive prices.

2017 Genesis G80

Model Year Updates

The Genesis G80 is a new model name and one of two sedans tasked with launching the Genesis marque. In reality, the 2017 G80 represents a refresh of the 2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan.

Besides the name change, the G80 reflects an equipment upgrade. Previously available active safety items such as lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control are now standard. You’ll also find Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

The 2017 Genesis G80 is offered in seven model or package choices: Standard 3.8 RWD ($41,400), Standard 3.8 AWD ($43,900), 3.8 Premium Package RWD ($46,150), 3.8 Premium Package AWD ($48,650), 3.8 Ultimate Package RWD ($50,350), 3.8 Ultimate Package AWD ($52,850), and a 5.0 Ultimate Package AWD ($54,550).

Prices do not include a $950 destination charge.

Exterior Overview

The elegant look of the previous Genesis Sedan returns, but with an updated grille and a new as well as more pronounced roofline. The sedan’s long sweeping lines and pronounced rear deck should remind you of similar European models with distinct profile creasing, rocker panel trim, and beautifully designed wheels adding flair and prominence.

All models are equipped with premium alloy wheels — 18 or 19 inches. You’ll also find automatic projector headlights, auto-leveling headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, dual power folding heated side mirrors with approach lights, and dual or quad exhaust tips. The power trunk lid and front fog LED lights are optional.

Interior Highlights

Midsize luxury sedans would be classified as large cars elsewhere and that’s exactly how the Genesis G80 measures up. This sedan offers honest to goodness room for five with excellent head, shoulder, hip, and legroom up front. In the rear compartment, leg room is a bit more constrained, especially if the driver’s seat is pushed completely back. This sedan also offers 15.3 cubic feet of storage space.

There is much to consider when examining the G80’s interior. As before, a large swathe of genuine wood trim covers the lower dashboard from the center stack to the rear door. The seats are covered in available full-grain leather with twin stitching. Metal grain or aluminum accents and high-end soft touch materials only enhance the look.

The 5.0 edition has more standard features; package upgrades on 3.8 trims may match most of what the top-trim G80 has to offer. Standard equipment includes a power driver’s seat with an extension, a power tilt and telescopic steering column, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and power accessories.

Available features include a panoramic tilt-and-slide sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. All Genesis models are covered by a five-year, 60,000-mile new vehicle warranty; a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty; and a seven-year, unlimited mile anti-perforation warranty.

Cutting-Edge Technologies

Technology fans will automatically be drawn to the Genesis G80 and all it has to offer. One standard feature is the automatic trunk opening system that senses your approach and opens the trunk automatically — no need to kick your foot under the rear bumper.

The available head’s-up display (HUD) provides such information as your speed, the local speed limit, audio system data, and advanced driver assistance data, including blind spot detection. All models include a proximity key for door unlock and push-button start.

On the media and navigation fronts, an available 900-watt, 17-speaker Lexicon Discrete Logic 7 audio system is sure to please. This system rivals the best audio packages out there and includes Gracenote album art, voice recognition, and 30 GB of music download via USB. Integrated technologies include both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Key Safety Features

Fresh out of the gate, the 2017 G80 has garnered the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ award, its highest honor. This means the G80 received top scores in all five crash testing categories. The sedan also received a “superior” score for its standard crash avoidance & mitigation technology.

Besides the previously mentioned driver assist technologies, the G80 comes with high beam assist and a suite of nine airbags. Other luxury sedans matching the G80’s top score include the Acura RLX, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo S80, and the Audi A6.

On the Road

What do you expect to find under the hood of a midsize luxury sedan? A turbo-diesel engine? A twin-turbo gas engine? Typically, these two choices accompany the established European players, but neither are currently offered in the Genesis G80.

Instead, you have a choice of two gasoline engines. Standard is a 3.8-liter V6 engine making 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. Also available is 5.0-liter V8 engine creating 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Only the V6 offers standard rear-wheel drive with available all-wheel drive. The V8 offers rear-wheel drive only. The EPA rates the RWD V6 at 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The V8 comes in at 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Yes, V8s are thirsty animals.

Our test model was powered by the V8. It does everything you expect: excellent off-the-mark acceleration, strong passing power, and so-so fuel economy. This sedan is quiet, rides smoothly, and brakes firmly.

2017 Genesis G80

Genesis says that the front shock towers of composed of aluminum, utilizing a diamond-strut bar for front structure rigidity leading to precise steering response. I concur that this arrangement does as advertised, enabling the G80 to navigate twisty roads with exactness. The rear features a multi-link suspension with an emphasis on enhancing lateral suspension stiffness and overall ride comfort.

Buyers preferring all-wheel drive have no powerplant choice, but the V6 engine. The AWD system distributes torque between the front and rear axles, sending more to the latter operating in sport mode. In any case, all powertrain choices feature a four-mode drive mode system — eco, normal, sport, and snow.

Parting Thoughts

So, now we have Genesis. That’s one more luxury brand to consider on top of Lexus, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz, Lincoln, Acura, Jaguar, LandRover, Volvo, and Audi. I didn’t even include Alfa Romeo, Porsche, Tesla, and a few other marques of distinction.

Why consider Genesis? For a few reasons: it is a new brand, prices are reasonable, equipment levels are generous, and this marque isn’t like all the rest. Why drive something everyone else owns when you can be one of the first on your block to opt for the G80? At least that’s the thinking of some.

On the other hand, if you want a diesel or performance model, you’re out of luck. At least for right now. Also, you’re limited to just two model lines and they’re both large sedans. Utility vehicles and at least one coupe will follow, but you can’t purchase one right now. At least not from Genesis.

Some critics will point to Genesis’ Hyundai roots as if that’s a bad thing. It shouldn’t be, as Hyundai quality and resale values are sky high. Besides, didn’t we hear the same thing about Lexus when Toyota launched its own luxury brand more than a quarter of a century ago? In a few years Genesis brand cachet should improve, but be forewarned: prices may increase as well.

In all, you can’t go wrong considering the Genesis G80, especially if you’re an individual who prizes independent thinking and appreciates the brand’s trailblazing in a highly competitive segment. This writer thinks Genesis will take hold and is confident that it’ll attract its own share of core followers. The brand won’t challenge the market leaders anytime soon, but that shouldn’t keep Genesis off your shopping list.

Hyundai Unveils its Genesis Way

November 9, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

Hyundai is going its own way as it launches its Genesis marque.

2016 Hyundai Genesis
The 2016 Hyundai Genesis sedan will become the 2017 Genesis G80.

In case you hadn’t heard, Hyundai has decided to launch its own luxury brand and will call it “Genesis,” the same name it uses for one of its high-end sedans. The Genesis brand will roll out in 2017 as two of its current models the Hyundai Genesis and Equus become the Genesis G80 and G90, respectively.

Korean automaker Hyundai has long considered its luxury options and originally decided its Hyundai nameplate was good enough to battle Lexus, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz and other luxury makes. But Genesis will not do something competing manufacturers have done — make a clean break from its mainstream brand.

Genesis Builds on Hyundai

Instead, Hyundai will rely on its existing dealer network to promote the Genesis brand with the new models offered under the same roof. Where Japanese makes such as Toyota have worked diligently to launch and maintain Lexus as a separate entity, Hyundai is less concerned about the possible confusion and seems intent on building upon that.

Gradually, Hyundai plans to launch a series of rear-wheel drive models bearing the Genesis name and is poised to take on such models as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Cadillac CTS, and the Lexus LS, to name a few. Once the original three sedans are launched, the automaker plans to add a coupe, crossover, and an SUV. Targeted models may include the BMW 4 Series, Audi Q5, and the Infiniti QX80.

To get there, the Genesis brand will rely upon the capable shoulders of Belgian car designer Luc Donckerwolke, formerly with Bentley. Donckerwolke left the Volkswagen Group a few months before the Volkswagen diesel scandal was revealed and will be tasked with presenting a new look for the Genesis brand.

Hints of that look may have already been seen in the Hyundai Vision G Concept Coupe unveiled at Pebble Bech this year, a four-door model that may point to the upcoming G80. Regardless, in Donckerwolke, Hyundai gains a designer whose handiwork appears on such models as the Lamborghini Murciélago and Bentley’s Flying Spur.

Strong Challengers in Place

Moving directly into the luxury realm is not without its challenges as well as its challengers. Several brands are deeply entrenched — Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW are a few that come to mind. Audi, despite its Volkswagen problems, is backed by the largest car manufacturer in the world. Cadillac and Lincoln are now receiving billions of dollars in new funding from GM and Ford, respectively. Even smaller brands such as Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo have gained new life as new owners have stepped in. Acura and Infiniti will also stand in the way.

But challenge is not a word that has stopped Hyundai in the past. In the 1980s, when it was new to the car making business, its Excel subcompact introduced low-cost Korean cars to the US market. But it brought with it a reputation for shoddy build quality, something Hyundai has gradually overcome.

Today, the Hyundai and sister Kia brands are near the top of the leading quality surveys. Further, the parent Hyundai Kia Automotive Group is now the fourth largest car manufacturer in the world. Hyundai-Kia has the muscle and the deep pockets to go with it.

Product Mix and a Changing Market

Perhaps the biggest challenge for the Genesis marque may be its product mix. By going with sedans initially, it will miss out on crossovers and SUVs, body styles that are contributing to the rise of not a few luxury brands. Then again, by the time Genesis gains hold, consumer tastes might shift again, especially if fuel prices rise and luxury cars become popular again.
