What is the Peugeot 5008?

The Peugeot 5008 is a compact crossover SUV released in its current layout in 2017. Prior to this, the 5008 was a multipurpose vehicle, but Peugeot, now part of Stellantis, figured it’s more profitable to transform it into an SUV.

Moreover, the Peugeot 5008 is closely related to its smaller variant, the Peugeot 3008, the biggest difference being how the 5008 is a 7-seater.

Many people enjoy the Peugeot 5008 because it’s a highly practical SUV that allows buyers to drive their families around in comfort. The recipe is fairly similar to other 3-row SUVs available in America, similar to the Dodge Durango or Chevrolet Traverse, just smaller and better fit for dense cities.

Exterior Design

Initially, the Peugeot 5008 was a multipurpose vehicle, which for all intents and purposes was quite sleek and not obtrusive. First revealed in 2009, the design was quite futuristic for the time, and the interior wasn’t all that shabby in that regard either.

However, in 2017 a myriad of changes arrived, transforming the apparently undesirable MPV into a crossover SUV. Frankly, the design was even better, with Peugeot already getting a hold of their vision with the Peugeot 308. The front end looks eerily similar to the aforementioned 308, especially when looking at the headlights.

The rear-end was also quite futuristic, with Peugeot setting the tone regarding the old-school bar-shaped taillight, which nowadays is trendy.

In 2020, the Peugeot 5008 received a facelift, bringing the design back in line with their new ideology, resulting in an aggressive stylistic choice. Lines are sharp, the cat-like headlights are present here too, the grill is cleverly blending into the front bumper, while the rear gets a significant spoiler for the car’s size.

Overall, multiple decisions were made to make the 5008 look modern and shorter in height, which in the end blended quite well. Thus, the 5008 doesn’t look that tall and ungracious.

Engine Choice

Peugeot 5008 profile

At the moment, the Peugeot 5008 has two engine choices, which frankly isn’t great by any stretch of the imagination. Moreover, the choices aren’t fantastic, to begin with: turbocharged 1.2-liter in-line three and a 1.5-liter turbodiesel in-line four.

Both engines have an output of 131 hp in terms of power, and 170 lb-ft, respectively, 220 lb-ft of torque. Whichever engine you pick, it will power the front wheels via either a manual transmission or an automatic transmission, depending on the country.

With the engines alone, the prospect is quite grim. However, the Peugeot 5008 isn’t that heavy, weighing in at around 3100 lb. If we were to compare it to other SUVs and cars on the American market, the car is quite underpowered. However, for the European, African, and Asian markets, the engines are respectable enough and power won’t be a significant issue.

Older models had either a 2.0-liter turbodiesel, or 1.6-liter gas, which had a bit more power, but Peugeot dropped them due to a variety of concerns. If we were to talk about a hybrid powertrain, there isn’t one available on the 5008, but there’s one available on the Peugeot 3008.

Driveability and Performance

Even if the Peugeot 5008 is quite voluminous, the car is maneuverable and tossable enough. You’ll notice a bit of wallowing and body roll, but when driven around sensibly, the car behaves wonderfully.

Moreover, the visibility is great too, making it easy to park around, for example, in the busy streets of Paris. However, don’t expect to have a fantastic time around tight corners and mountainous roads, seeing how the Peugeot 5008 is quite long, somewhat heavy, and a bit slow.

Notwithstanding, being the driver of the car is a slightly different story. As all things go with Peugeot, the seating position is awkward for several people. You might struggle to see the speedometer, or you won’t be able to see properly past the steering wheel, as happened to a few owners and testers.

On the inside, the car is a lovely place to be in. The build quality is amazing, with great sound deadening and no rattles whatsoever. Seeing the amenities available, visibility, and room, the passengers also have a great time.

However, the third row is a bit cramped if you plan on driving adults. Another significant caveat is that with the third row up, the trunk space is almost non-existent. Thus, it allows you to store a few large shopping bags at most.

Peugeot 5008 Final Thoughts

If you require a fancy workhorse, the Peugeot 5008 seems to be an alright choice. You can carry all your family as comfortably as possible, while also having the room to haul an entire apartment if the need arises.

Moreover, the car is wonderfully built, having a myriad of amenities and plenty of comfort, allowing you to drive long distances with ease.
