Blacked Out: GMC Sierra Double Cab

August 7, 2015 by admin 3 Comments

This blacked-out Sierra “Elevation Edition” makes for a stylish truck.

America’s love affair with pickup trucks is a strong one. During the last recession, it seemed as if the segment might not recover from its beating down as sales fell to less than half the historic highs.

But don’t tell that to the millions of Americans who cannot imagine life without their Fords, Rams, Chevrolets and GMCs as well as their Nissans and their Toyotas. Pickup trucks are the most versatile vehicles on the market, doing triple duty as a family carrier, a payload hauler and as a trailering maven. There are no other vehicles on the market as versatile. Moreover, when some models are outfitted with advanced technologies and high-end cabins, there is yet another reason for people to consider purchasing one.

GMC Sierra Double Cab

GM has shipped a variety of GMC and Chevrolet pickup trucks to me, especially in the past year. I’ve driven the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Sierra. Double and crew cabs only — not a single regular cab was sent. The absence of a regular cab shouldn’t be too surprising as the take rate for these body styles is now down to the single digits. Most people want a crew cab, a small number choose a double cab and very few people want the traditional regular cab.

A 2015 GMC Sierra Double Cab 4×2 was a recent weekly driver. This model was different for a few reasons: it wasn’t equipped with navigation, there was no backup camera, and satellite radio was absent. I hadn’t seen a polyurethane-wrapped steering wheel in years, but that’s what this Sierra had. And on the face of that steering wheel was only one set of switches — for cruise control — fastened as a lonely outpost on the left side of the wheel.

But the Double Cab wasn’t entirely stripped: where it lacked certain desirable amenities, it still came with a tilt steering column, power accessories, an audio system and USB ports. Perhaps the most fascinating matter about the Sierra is that it was dressed entirely in black — including the bumpers, the side mirror cladding, the door handles and the wheels. A sporty look, no doubt, and quite unusual for a GMC.

The upgrades were apparent from a cost perspective too, what elevated the base $30,695 sticker price and added $5,425 worth of options.

Double Cab Elevation Edition

Those options included replacing the base 4.3-liter V-6 engine with the small-block 5.3-liter V-8 engine ($1,095). Both engines come paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. You have to choose the 6.2-liter V-8 to get the eight-speed automatic. A spray-on bed liner added $475, but it was the Elevation edition ($3,855) that added the special goodies.

Such niceties included 20-inch, black painted wheels, halogen projector headlamps, front fog lamps, power heated side mirrors, and all the black cladding spoken about earlier. That blackness extended to the grille and, with the LED lights on, they provided a distinctive touch.

The Elevation edition also brought in LED lighting for the cargo box, front recovery hooks (in black, of course), color-keyed carpeting, remote keyless entry and a 110-volt power outlet. Inside, the cabin is dressed in black. And in gray too. The blackness is nearly everywhere except for the seats, the headliner and the door inserts. Gray gives the interior some much needed pop.

Room for Six

The tested double cab offered room for six. That means where the usual front center console is located, a folding console was put in its place. That middle seat position is very important to some people. That it can be used as a seat or converted to a console is a bonus. However, sitting in that position for any length of time is a test of your personal mettle — the front, middle seat does not have the support or the bolstering of the other two front seats. A pre-teen should fit, but a teenager’s legs would slap against the dash.

The rear seat was a fold up bench seat. No 60-40 split here — you either fold the entire seat or you leave it down. When folded, it offers an excellent place for interior storage.

The Sierra Double Cab provides other storage areas including a dual glove box. The front doors have two drink holder spots each and three other areas for storage. The rear seat doors come with one drink holder a piece and also include storage. Drop down the front console and you are treated to three cup holders, storage crannies, a smart phone holder and an interior storage compartment. That compartment also includes a 12-volt outlet, an auxiliary input port, and two USB ports. Yet another storage compartment is located at the base of the center stack.

Someday, GM will deliver a Sierra or Silverado with the 4.3-liter, V-6 engine for me to test drive. Prior to the engine’s upgrade coinciding with the 2014 new edition, that base motor made a paltry 195 horsepower. The latest edition received a 50 percent power boost without forced induction and is now rated at 285 horsepower. That’s still well below the 355 horsepower offered by the small-block V-8, itself compared with the 420 horsepower offered by the big V-8.

Six Tons of Towing Capabilities

But V-8 engines have a certain mystique about them, especially when the V-6 is also naturally aspirated. Towing is king with pickup trucks and the test model had a base 9,500-pound towing rating or 12,000 pounds with the trailering package. Credit the available 3.42 rear axle with providing 2,000 extra pounds of towing goodness.

As far as my personal driving impressions for the GMC Sierra, you can learn more by visiting an earlier review here. Concerning the look offered by the Elevation edition, sport truck enthusiasts should give it more than a cursory glance.

Chevrolet Silverado Z71: Top-End Pickup

June 12, 2015 by admin 3 Comments

Chevrolet Silverado Z71

Within the past year I’ve had the opportunity to drive six pickup trucks produced by General Motors: three Chevrolet models and three GMC models. The differences between these trucks was small, except where size comes in, such as with the full-size Silverado versus the midsize Colorado.

Z71 It Is

This past week yet another Chevrolet truck pulled up to my driveway. This model was officially called the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 4WD LTZ Crew Cab. That’s a mouthful, so I simply referred to it as the Z71 for the entire week.

Chevy truck fans know that the Z71 is an off-road beast — badging on the grille and on the front doors attest to this. This model has certain features unique to it including, a special chrome grille design, recovery hooks, an underbody transfer case shield (4WD models only), hill descent control, all-terrain tires, an automatic locking rear differential, and a Z71 off-road suspension system with Rancho monotube shocks.

You also get the Z71 appearance package with a special gauge cluster, bumper treatments and exclusive finish trim. And you will pay for this too, as the crew cab 4×4 is priced from $45,810. The test model added nearly $12,000 to the final price — a $2,495 engine upgrade; $2,000 in custom sport trim; $995 for a power sunroof; $995 for special white tricolor paint; $845 for a driver alert package; plus another $3,000 in amenities and convenience features.

High Prices, Big Discounts

Big pickup truck pricing may scare some customers, but there is one thing you should know: discounting is rampant and at the time of publication discounts and incentives totaling $8,000 on crew cab models was available. Personally, I have heard of discounts of $10,000 or more on some pickup truck models, at least for those with a sticker price north of $50,000. Drive a hard bargain and you should be satisfied with your deal.

Said pickup truck specimen came with the 6.2-liter, V-8 engine and all the power you can possibly want. And that’s a good thing for the trailering type consumer — you have nearly six tons (11,900 pounds) of towing capacity. Furthermore, payload comes in at upwards of 2,210 pounds for the smaller V-8 (2,050 for the 6.2-liter engine), more than enough to haul five big guys and all the stuff you can fit in the bed.

On the road, this truck rolls with ease. Notably, the off-road tires don’t make handling a chore. Suffice to say, I did not take this model off road as I’ve done so several times before.

The Z71 is more than able to handle every slough, berm, sabulous path, and craggy surface. I am sure that there are areas where you won’t want to take it, but your off-road options are more attainable than they are not.

Chevrolet Silverado Z71

Upscale Interior

Trucks like the Z71 are often called a “Country Cadillac” although they don’t quite match the interiors found in the truck-based Cadillac Escalade SUV. Nevertheless, the cabin is roomy, quiet and comfortable — offering a stark contrast to its “down and dirty” capabilities. Oddly, Chevrolet painted the front and rear bumpers to give the pickup a bit of an upscale look. But then that’s just one more area of the truck you will have to keep clean after you finish mudding.

You can order a Z71 with the 40/20/40 split bench seat and make room for three up front, but you probably won’t want to as the bucket seats are much more comfortable and sensible. In the test model the seats came sheathed in leather, with stitched soft touch material covering the dashboard, placed around the center console and across the door inlays.

The weekly driver seated five and did so without compromise. It also was outfitted with numerous accessories, including keyless entry; a tilt and telescopic steering column; power accessories; a six-speaker audio system, and Chevrolet MyLink with an 8-inch screen; navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, USB ports, an auxiliary jack and an SD card slot. Bluetooth connectivity and an OnStar directions and connections plan were also present.

Moreover, Chevrolet extended the upscale touches by bringing in dual-zone climate control, visor vanity mirrors, an automatic dimming rear mirror, heated and cooled front seats, a power sliding rear window, a rear window defogger, and a power sunroof. Consequently, you end up with a vehicle that combines a top-end interior with formidable off-road prowess, a pairing that bringing in the best of both worlds.

Chevrolet Silverado Z71

Key Safety Features

On the safety front, all trucks come equipped with daytime running lights. Stability control, traction control, and six airbags are also included.

Lane departure warning is available as part of a driver alert package. Furthermore, the federal government gives this truck a top crash rating — consider its tall profile and two-and-one-half ton weight as key factors in its favor.

Chevrolet Silverado Z71

Pickup Truck Market Strength

Some analysts pronounced doom and gloom on the Chevrolet and GMC truck lines when Ford announced a few years back that its next generation F-150 pickup truck would feature an aluminum-based body. Prognostications had the nascent Ford clobbering its competitors in fuel economy and performance, but it hasn’t worked out that way.

Indeed, Chevrolet and GMC sales are up this year with the combined Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra line outselling the Ford F-150 again. Ford has been gradually and carefully building up production of its large truck, but sales through May 2015 were down by 1.1 percent year-over-year. On the other hand, Silverado and Sierra sales are up 13.8 and 5.7 percent, respectively.

Then there is also the matter of the General’s midsize truck line, something that Ford doesn’t offer. Another 47,500 Colorados and Canyons have been sold through the first five months of the year, enabling GM to seize the king of the pickup truck mantle. Indeed, that represents at least 50,000 more Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks than Ford in a segment that is up 10 percent year-to-date.

Ultimately the Silverado Z71 may be a niche model, but it satisfies the consumer who wants the best of two worlds: around town practicality and off-road deftness.

Like a Rock: Chevrolet Silverado

May 22, 2015 by admin 6 Comments

The Chevrolet Silverado offers rock solid performance with three new engines to show for it. The Silverado is the type of truck is fit for both work and family with three cabin choices available.

2015 Chevrolet Silverado
2015 Chevrolet Silverado.

Chevrolet and its GMC consort provide the only compilation of heavy-duty, full-size and midsize pickup trucks in the industry. While Ford is chasing aluminum in a bid to reduce weight and increase fuel mileage, General Motors is staying the course with its steel trucks. And not that the company had much choice: the 2014 model year marked the onset of the current generation of its large trucks — GM’s plans were thoroughly in place when Ford announced its initiative. Thus, it will be another four or five years before GM can make a change.

Is GM worried about Ford’s supposed engineering edge? No one is quite certain, although the automaker is not showing concern. And why should they? Demand for both brands is strong as lower gas prices and a broad number of models have coalesced to help GM outdistance Ford as the largest constructor of passenger trucks.

Rear-Wheel Drive Tester

I’ve had the pleasure of driving an assortment of GMC and Chevrolet pickup trucks over the past year, including the new midsize twins. A Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab was a recent weekly driver and it delivered the one thing that had been absent to date: a 4×2 or rear-wheel drive configuration. In the test model I didn’t mind the extra doors as it gave me extra interior storage space with the rear seat folded up.

As for the generational transmutation between the current and the previous truck, GM played it relatively safe by carefully modernizing the design, updating the sheet metal, overhauling the engine and introducing the third generation of its large pickup truck engines.

The two smaller engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission while the largest V-8 is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. And for the first time cylinder deactivation comes to the V-6, what shuts down two of the cylinders in certain driving conditions. In doing so, the top fuel mileage for the Chevrolet Silverado is now pegged at 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

In effect, GM chose engine finagling over aluminum engineering to nearly match Ford’s turbocharged V-6, coming in at just 2 mpg under. As for Ford’s naturally aspirated V-6, the Silverado’s fuel economy is dead even.

However, fuel economy is not the concern that it is in 2015 as it was more than a year earlier when prices were averaging a dollar or more per gallon higher than they are today. What’s big on a full size pickup truck owner’s list is payload and towing. The V-6’s payload is 1,800 pounds and its standard towing is 5,600 pounds (7,100 with the 4×4). With trailering packages for the V-8 engines, maximum towing passes 11,000 pounds.

Three EcoTec3 Engines

GM’s EcoTec3 engines — the 4.3-liter V-6 (285 horsepower and 305 foot-pounds of torque), a 5.3-liter V-8 (355 horsepower and 383 foot-pounds of torque) and a 6.2-liter V-8 (420 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque) come with two other features besides cylinder deactivation: direct injection and variable valve lift technology. Furthermore, the powertrain trio are outfitted with an advanced combustion system, ideal when trailering on a hot day — GM says the engines “reduce the need to trim back spark advance to control detonation,” what typically happens when towing on a hot day. In addition, emission output has been reduced.

Typical for this class is that you can order a Silverado in regular, extended (Double) and crew cab editions. Notably, there is an important distinction between the extended Silverado and the extended F-150. Whereas the Chevrolet has front-hinged, rear doors you get rear-hinged doors with the Ford. However, with the Ford, you must open the front door to get to the back door, an extra step the Chevrolet eliminates.

On the negative side, both extended cab models are tight getting in and out and lack sufficient leg room. If you have a work crew, invest in the crew cab.

Exterior Demeanor

Pickup trucks are among the largest passenger vehicles on the planet and they look it. The Chevrolet Silverado is marked by a substantial, horizontal chrome grille flanked by stacked headlamps over a chrome bumper. A generously proportioned lower grille opening is present.

A muscular hood gives way to strong shoulders, slab siding and wheel well character lines. At the rear is a lift and fold tailgate. Access is provided by way of the corner step bumpers on either side. The Double Cab is outfitted with a six-foot-six-inch box, the crew cab has a 5-foot-eight-inch box; an eight-foot box is standard with the regular cab.

Interior Design

It is nearly impossible to convey the number of trim levels, package options and other permutations that Chevrolet offers with its Silverado line. For the most part, those differences pertain to audio, navigation and seating arrangements — the bones are essentially the same.

Notwithstanding some differences, the Double Cab 4×2 has a roomy front cabin, tight rear quarters and lots of plastic. That plastic is of both the softened and hardened varieties. It covers the dashboard, surrounds the instrument panel and center stack, and is found on the doors and door handles.

Padded material covers the armrests and door inlays and the seats are covered in stitched cloth. Even the steering wheel is polyurethane. Rubberized vinyl floor coverings are included.

All Silverado models come equipped with remote keyless entry, a tilt steering wheel, power accessories, air conditioning and cruise control. The instrument panel is a six-analog layout with large tachometer and speedometer readings flanking a digital driver information center. At the top of the panel are battery, radiator, fuel and oil gauges.

So, the center stack is the preeminent focal point of today’s vehicles, right? It is that way in the Silverado too. But you will have to pay for it. Indeed, a 4.2-inch color display is included — tiny by today’s standards —and it does include a three-month SiriusXM satellite trial subscription. Navigation is extra and there is no backup camera — a feature that will be universally applied to US-spec vehicles beginning in 2016.

Beneath the display are knobs and buttons for the audio system with additional knobs and buttons for climate control below that. Two big switches for disconnecting traction control and activating the box light are also present. At the base of the stack is a storage compartment and a 12-volt outlet.

To the left of the steering wheel is where you would find the controls for the 4×4 models. To the far right is a two compartment glove box. Up above is sunglasses storage and reading lights. All four doors come with bottle holders and storage cubbies.

Seating For Six

The Silverado Double Cab was the first pickup truck I’ve driven with six seating positions. Surely, you get the requisite bucket seats up front, but you also get a flip up middle seat that doubles as a storage compartment. Let’s just say that this particular seat position should only be used in a pinch. And that means for short drives and with an equally short passenger. Leave the compartment in place and you get three cup holders, storage nooks, a place to hold your cell phone, two USB ports, an auxiliary input port and a 12-volt outlet.

Consider the rear seat sufficient for holding three people, but with a few caveats: legroom comes at a premium and the seat is much too thinly padded to be considered comfortable. So, instead, I drove around with the seat folded up most of the time, enjoying the sizable interior storage space gained.

The driver’s seat is supportive and manually operated — you must upgrade to get the power-operated seats.

A Proven Workhorse

As tested, the media fleet special was priced from $31,940 and added several packages including the smallest of the V-8 engines ($1,095). A custom wheel package ($1,290) brought in 20-inch silver painted aluminum wheels and chrome embellishments. Other options included a stunning deep ocean blue metallic finish ($495), a spray-on liner ($475) and a trailer package with auto locking rear differential ($770). With discounting included, the final price came in at $35,660.

Initially I had thought that I was getting the V-6 engine and had hoped as much, knowing that its near 50 percent boost in performance has made it a worthy power plant. So worthy that it no longer is consigned to base work trucks as it is now available across the Silverado line.

The small-block V-8 is a proven workhorse and likely the powertrain of choice for most Silverado shoppers. While one of Chevrolet’s competitors is resorting to turbocharging to gain some much desired boost, the V-8 is naturally-aspirated and delivers the required performance. Pairing it with an 8-speed automatic would extend its usefulness and give this truck an optimum combination of performance and efficiency. Altogether you get what you need and for pickup truck buyers that amounts to everything.

If there is a particular deficiency with the Silverado line it would have nothing to do with light weighting, but everything to do with a diesel option. Presently, only a turbo-diesel is available with the heavy-duty trucks. At this instant, Ram has a turbo-diesel and beginning in 2016 the Nissan Titan will gain one too. Its an option that is not all that important when fuel prices are relatively low, but when the competition heats up and gas prices with it, diesel power is advantageous.

Aluminum Tough: 2015 Ford F-150

May 7, 2015 by admin 25 Comments

2015 Ford F-150

The Ford Motor Company is in the midst of an experiment, one that could just as easily be described as a gamble. Beginning with the 2015 model year the F-150 is all new, but its uniqueness isn’t limited to a fresh face or a new engine — both are apparent — rather to the company’s resoluteness to go with an aluminum body instead of steel. That decision is a light-weighting move that Ford says yields a more economical model. Indeed, with the smallest V-6 engine chosen, the 4×2 F-150 is now rated at 26 mpg on the highway.

Some critics have openly wondered whether the new Ford trucks were up to the task, but the automaker has assured us that the trucks have endured millions of miles of testing to prove its brawn, something that I was able to confirm after a week of testing.

2015 Ford F-150

That test model was a 2015 Ford F-150 4×4 SuperCab, the middle of three cabin choices. A three-passenger regular cab and a six-passenger SuperCrew cab are the other choices.

Before we examine the model at hand, a look at the available models (or editions) is necessary. Ford prices the 2015 model from $25,800 (XL edition) and also offers XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum editions for a maximum price of $51,350. But you will pay more for 4×4 models and special packages. Ford also eliminated half of its editions for this year, a move that consolidates its offerings.

2015 Ford F-150

Furthermore, Ford also eliminated the larger of its two V-8 engines — displacing at 6.2 liters — and now offers three V-6 engines and just one V-8. Certainly, that sort of maneuver would have been unheard of a decade ago as most truck fleets were dominated by V-8 engines with a token six-cylinder offered.

The base engine is a normally-aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 followed by a new, 2.7-liter EcoBoost (turbocharging and direct fuel injection) V-6. A 5.0-liter V-8 is the next choice, followed by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6. All four engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with a tow/haul mode. Importantly, each model takes regular grade gasoline.

The weekly loaner had the smallest of the four engines, so I was able to experience what this 325-horsepower motor has to offer. My verdict is in: the smallest engine is big on power — not once did I feel that I was being “cheated” by its comparably diminutive footprint. There were times when I had to remind myself that it wasn’t a V-8 under the hood, such is the vigor of this powerhouse from the low end of the RPM band at that.

2015 Ford F-150

Weight Saving Measures

Ford says that it trimmed up to 700 pounds with its latest generation pickup truck, a move that has had no adverse effect on payload or towing — the twin prerequisites of large trucks. In fact, Ford now claims preeminence among its competitors as its 3,300-pound payload and 12,200-pound towing capacity beat its five competitors: the Chevrolet Silverado, Ram 1500, GMC Sierra, Toyota Tundra and the Nissan Titan.

Has Ford raised the bar with the all-new F-150? You be the judge. And if its near four-decade dominance in the segment is not enough to convince you of its fortitude, then you probably need to do some head-to-head testing to find out yourself.

2015 Ford F-150

Additional Changes Enumerated

Besides going with a high-strength aluminum-alloy body and steel frame, changing its engine offerings and streamlining the editions, the 2015 Ford F-150 boasts a number of other modifications that are noteworthy.

First, the tailgate can now be remotely locked just as you would do with the doors. Indeed, if you activate the close door feature you will hear the doors and the tailgate lock in place.

Second, Ford upgraded its lighting offerings to make LED headlamps and tail lamps available.

Third, an available 360-degree camera view makes it possible to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the truck, a feature that makes it easier to park or maneuver your F-150.

Fourth, Ford rolled out a BoxLink system that utilizes a coalescence of metal brackets and custom cleats to secure accessories in your cargo box.

Fifth, a smart trailer tow module makes use of an all-new wiring harness to help the driver pinpoint problems with connectivity, including brake light and trailer battery issues. Separately, Ford also offers a trailer hitch assist in the form of a rear view camera that makes use of dynamic lines, removing the necessity of a human spotter.

Other updates include: 400-watt, 110-volt power outlets in the cab, a new 8-inch LCD productivity screen, LED lighting embedded in the walls of the cargo box, and under seat storage in the SuperCab and SuperCrew models.

2015 Ford F-150

SuperCab Means Constrained Rear Space

My impressions of the SuperCab model are mixed. On the one hand, I had no complaints about the driver’s seat, the instrument panel or center stack (although the Ford Sync system needs improvement) or the performance. However, the second row is accessible by means of a pair of rear-pivoting half doors what provides ease of access to that section, but also means you can only open them when the front doors have been opened.

Like other manufacturers, the SuperCab configuration provides the extra room, but that room is best used by families with younger children — legroom is tight, especially if either the driver or the front passenger pushes his seat back. Surely, if you want an F-150 for your work crew, the SuperCrew is your best choice.

Exterior Highlights

Standard with the XL edition are 17-inch silver steel wheels. Painted aluminum, machined-aluminum and polished aluminum wheels are available. All-season tires are standard; all-terrain tires are available.

Ford trucks are offered in three bed sizes: 5-foot-6-inch, 6-foot-6-inch and 8-foot beds. Each bed represents Ford’s traditional “Styleside” design.

Interior Highlights

The base XL edition is outfitted with a 40/20/40 vinyl bench seat. It can also be updated to cloth. It isn’t until you reach the Lariat edition where leather is available and offered standard. Bucket seats are optional with the XLT and standard in the Lariat and above.

The Lariat also offers a power driver and front passenger seat. This feature is optional with the XLT, but it isn’t available with the XL edition. In SuperCab and SuperCrew models, you get a 60/40 flip up bench seat.

All models are equipped with air conditioning, with dual-zone climate control coming in when you choose the Lariat. A standard AM-FM audio package upgrades to a Sony audio system elsewhere. Navigation is standard only with the top end models, optional elsewhere except with the base model. Furthermore, SiriusXM satellite radio and SYNC with MyFord Touch are optional.

Every Ford F-150 comes with power windows and door locks, a 12-volt outlet up front and an additional 12-volt outlet in the rear for extended cab models, and an auxiliary audio input jack. King Ranch and Platinum editions come with a USB port, what is also included with tech packages elsewhere. The two top editions also come with a rear view camera.

There are a number of important points about the dashboard that should be considered. Notably, the instrument panel is easy to read with large analog dials for the tachometer and speedometer and four smaller dials for the gas gauge and other features. Smack dab in the middle of it all is a digital driver’s information center — what you control on the surface of the steering wheel. By the way, a tilt and telescopic steering column is standard.

Surprisingly, the center stack features a small color display. It just doesn’t seem sized right for this vehicle. Moreover, the SYNC 3 system that will begin rolling out for the 2016 model year cannot come soon enough.

I absolutely appreciated the storage spaces between the front seats. You have an enclosed storage compartment, a pair of open compartments as well as a place to hold your smartphone. The requisite deep storage compartment between the seats was also there as well as a large and deep glove box. Commercial account buyers should be satisfied with this design.

2015 Ford F-150

Safety Considerations

Besides the available rear view camera, all models come with a suite of six airbags. Curve control is standard as are four-wheel anti-lock brakes. SuperCrew models offer inflatable rear safety belts with all editions except for the XL. A blind spot information system with rear cross traffic alert is available.

Crashworthiness testing as conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is not yet complete for the 2015 Ford F-150. However, in testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the regular cab model received 5-star ratings for both the 4×2 and 4×4 editions. That represents the NHTSA’s highest score.

2015 Ford F-150

The Bottom Line

Will the 2015 Ford F-150 satisfy current owners? That seems likely and judging by early demand for the new model and Ford’s careful ramping up of production, there just doesn’t seem to be much to stop the F-150. Concerns that some have expressed about its durability are unfounded. Furthermore, bodily repair costs should be in line with other trucks, something that the insurance industry stands by.

GMC Sierra Denali: The Peak of Pickup Truck Living

May 6, 2015 by admin 3 Comments

Large trucks are as popular as ever and in the Sierra, GMC has one that may interest you. The Sierra Denali is the top trim level, bringing lots of exterior chrome, interior trim and leather, and the payload and trailering capacities that shoppers demand.

GMC Sierra DenaliPickup truck sales are booming and General Motors is well-positioned to meet that demand. It is the only company offering three full lines of pickup trucks — medium, full-size light-duty and heavy-duty models. And it does so under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands.

GMC has a certain cachet that attracts a smaller, but more profitable segment of the consumer market. And to that end a pinnacle “Denali” trim level is offered with all the chrome, glitz and leather that allows GMC to assume the “luxury” mantle with these particular models.

2015 GMC Sierra Denali

The GMC Sierra is the full-size pickup truck and a Denali 1500 4WD Crew Cab was a recent weekly visitor. It was the second go round of the model year for this type of truck, with an up level 2500 the previous test subject. No matter, when the press fleet distributor brings them, then I will test whatever is in my driveway. And this time I took said subject off road — briefly — but just long enough for me to see how it performed in muck, mire, slough and so forth. More about that sodden experience later.

The standard Sierra is powered by a 4.3-liter V-6 engine making 285 horsepower and 305 foot-pounds of torque. Engine choice number two of three is a 5.3-liter V-8 engine rated at 355 horsepower and 383 foot-pounds of torque. Your third choice is a colossal 6.2-liter V-8 engine making 420 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque. The two smaller engines are paired with a six-speed automatic; the larger engine gets an eight-speed automatic. As tested, the Denali came with choice number three.

Trucks of the Sierra Denali’s proportions seem imposing. And they are. The longest model, when equipped with a 6-foot-6-inches bed, is nearly 20 feet in length. Moreover, it spans more than 7 feet across with its mirrors and is just over six feet tall. That these models take up significant road space is a given. That they are also a bear to park in today’s smaller parking spaces may not be entirely grasped until you are driving one.

GMC Sierra Denali

Redesign Ahead of Ford

GM redesigned the GMC Sierra and its Chevrolet Silverado twin for the 2014 model year. That changeover preceded the much anticipated next generation Ford F-150, now sporting an aluminum body. Despite whatever edge Ford claims with the lighter material, the fuel economy differences are negligible — no more than 2 mpg between models. Furthermore, loyal buyers continue to flood GMC showrooms and are now considering the smaller Canyon too. Notably, the Canyon has not poached Sierra sales as GMC truck sales are up across the board. Certainly, you can thank $2.50 per gallon gasoline for that trend.

All Sierra pickup trucks are marked by a massive grille, a long hood, strong shoulders, a slab side and a pickup truck bed. Indeed, there is not much to distinguish these models until you opt for various upgrades. Oh, yes, the side CornerSteps on the rear bumper are a welcome way to access the truck bed.

Choose a Denali edition and you get chrome touches on the upper grille, the lower grille, the door handles, on the side mirrors, around the windows, and along the lower part of the doors. And if that isn’t enough, you get 20-inch ultra bright machined aluminum wheels. If bling isn’t your thing, then the Denali isn’t for you. Or pay for a customized blacked-out appearance package after the fact to rid yourself of at least some of the bedecked trappings.

GMC Sierra Denali

Cavernous and Well-Appointed Interior

Inside, the GMC Sierra offers no compromise room for five. Not only that, but if you are a crew-centric commercial account, then you can swap the front bucket seats with a bench seat to gain a sixth spot. In doing so you lose the substantial and cavernous storage compartment splitting the front seats. But you do gain locking under-seat storage on SLE editions with the front bench seating.

All seating positions are very comfortable in the Sierra Denali. Specifically, GMC adds “dual-density seat foam” that holds its shape longer in a bid to maintain comfort. And the big guys sitting in the front bucket seats have all the room they need with generous amounts of head, shoulder, hip and leg room. To be sure, only the full size pickup trucks presents a suitable driving experience for the tallest people among us.

Everything about the Sierra Denali seems large because it is. The instrument panel is upgraded from the standard Denali, with standard models featuring a six-analog display with tachometer and speedometer readouts dominating. Four smaller displays are at the top of the panel with a digital driver’s information center below these.

View manufacturer details and pricing

GMC Sierra DenaliHowever, in the Denali, you have two capacious analog read outs surrounding a digitalized compass and speedometer. Attached to either side of that center dial are oil pressure and fuel gauges.

To the left of the steering wheel are the 4WD controls for four-wheel drive models. On the steerage wheel itself are the cruise and secondary audio controls. That steering column tilts and telescopes to allow you to find the ideal comfort position. With top-of-the-line models, memory settings allow you to save your seating position.

One of my personal favorite designs for the Sierra Denali is its center stack. In fact, it is easy to comprehend and use, starting with the color display. That display features smartphone-like apps to gain additional information about navigation, climate control, audio and more. Beneath that are switches and dials for operating the audio system, climate control and a melange of other driver features.

At the base of the center stack — at least in the Sierra Denali — is a dream formation of multiple USB ports, a 12-volt outlet, an auxiliary input port and a 110-volt outlet. Truly, the connectivity aspect along with the downreaching storage compartment suitable for hanging folders makes the Sierra Denali an office on wheels. Not to mention the 4G LTE feature that brings in WiFi for Internet access.

All Sierra models come with a complete infotainment package, including an audio system. However, in the Denali you get a 7-speaker Bose audio system with subwoofer.

GMC Sierra Denali

Storage and More

The Denali features multiple in-cabin storage areas. For example, you get an oversized two-tier glove box, and a storage well between the seats located just before the two cup holders, in door storage holders with drink holders, and an overhead console. Speaking about overhead, the Sierra Denali also has a sunroof.

In many vehicles, the rear seating passengers may feel cheated. But not so with the Sierra Denali. For instance, if you were to place three large men side-by-side in the back seat, there is enough head, shoulder, hip and leg room to go around. With two people in the back, the center position converts to an oversized armrest and cup holder.

GMC Sierra Denali

On or Off the Road

Take to the road and the Sierra Denali has copious amounts of energy at the ready. From out of the gate and on to the highway, you have every bit of power at your disposal. The transmission shifts with confidence through each gear, although in the upper gears there were times it seemed to “hunt” or hesitate for the next gear.

Off-roading is one feature of the Sierra Denali 4×4 that should be attempted to be fully appreciated. It may seem a bit of an oddity to some that such a “pretty” truck should do off-road duty, but it does so without drama. Don’t mistake its visage for being anything less than a beastly workhorse.

One of my favorite places to take a 4×4 is a clay bog about 20 miles from my home. At first glance, the morass leading to a hunting club’s entrance seems nothing more than a puddle. But if you do not come properly equipped, you will discover that the moor quickly becomes a quagmire. It is also the perfect place to test out your 4×4 system.

A certain section of that morass is especially muddy. Thus, switching from 4×4 high to low may be necessary, especially if your tires are more of the on-road variety. Not once was I stuck, although I kicked up enough red, oozy mud to make it appear as if I did engage in an all-day 4×4 affair. In the event that you do get stuck, the Sierra Denali has a pair of tow hooks up front for your extrication.

People may shop for a Sierra Denali for its large cabin, high-end amenities and its ton-plus payload capacity, but trailering may be the overarching factor for some. To enumerate, minimum towing for the 4×2 model is 5,500 pounds. But with the trailering package included, your towing capacity leaps to a robustious 12,000 pounds. However, the 4×4 edition offers minimum towing of 7,100 pounds and tops out at 11,900 pounds. As you can see the Sierra Denali offers a complete package that seems to satiate the desires of many.

GMC Sierra Denali

Your GMC Choices

If you find the Sierra too big of a package for your needs, then take heart as there is a Canyon model with Denali trim that can meet your needs. Either way, you have access to trucks that deliver what owners insist on in a variety of sizes and trim levels.

GMC Canyon: Smaller Truck, Big Amenities

April 21, 2015 by admin 4 Comments

2015 GMC Canyon 4WD Crew Cab
2015 GMC Canyon 4WD Crew Cab

The GMC Canyon is nothing less than a brute, a robust midsize pickup truck sold in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations. The Canyon and its Chevrolet Colorado sibling were brought back to the market in 2015 after a three-year hiatus — both models compete in a sector dominated last year by the Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier.

That self-evident moiety is being turned upside down as sales for the GM doublet have pushed past Nissan for the first three months of 2015 (Chevrolet Colorado — 19,126 + GMC Canyon — 7,152 = 26,278 v. Nissan Frontier 19,102). The Toyota Tacoma at 39,666 units sold remains the segment pacesetter, but the heat is on. In response, Toyota will debut an updated Tacoma for the 2016 model year.

Notably, sales of the full-size GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado have not been adversely affected by the reintroduction of the smaller trucks. Through March 2015, Sierra sales are up 7 percent, while Silverado sales are up 17.6 percent. Furthermore, GM is the only manufacturer selling three truck lines — a small pickup truck, a full-size model and heavy-duty editions. The Ford F-150 may be the best selling model line, but GM is the pickup truck forerunner. Allow that thought to marinate for a few moments.

GMC models typically command a slightly higher price point than Chevrolet trucks, usually for equipment and trim differences. Both trucks offer standard and extended wheelbase options, two cabin sizes, two truck bed lengths, and three trim levels (base, SLE and SLT). Sadly, this segment no longer offers regular cab models — your choices are extended and crew cab trucks.

2015 GMC Canyon

But even as cabin styles shrink, the base price for these models remains highly competitive. For 2015, the GMC Canyon Extended Cab 4×2 is priced from $21,880 —destination charge included. GMC prices the Crew Cab, Short Box from $26,130 and the Crew Cab, Long Box from $27,650.

However, if you choose a 4×4 configuration, you will need to add thousands of dollars to your base price as GMC buoys up the content level with these models accordingly. My test model, a Canyon 4WD SLE Crew Short Box, retailed for $34,935. And with an all-terrain package ($1,190), power lumbar package ($745), and several other conveniences, trailering and audio packages included, the final price for this smaller truck was substantially priced at $39,090. Now let that price point also marinate for a few moments.

What will please GMC fans is the look of this pickup truck, inside and out. As far as its visage, the Canyon complements the larger Sierra and strikingly so. Its dimensions are about three-quarters of the Sierra’s size, but its bold, upright grille, strong shoulders, solid slab sides and versatile truck bed gate are more like the Sierra than they are not. Certainly, GM had to compensate for the truck’s smaller formation, but the arched wheel wells, sturdy cabin compartment and the rear step bumper have found a home in the Canyon.

Seating for up to Five

Inside, seating is for up to five with bucket seats up front and a folding bench seat to the rear. The extended cab would be useful for holding children, while the crew cab has more legroom for adults. Two average-sized men can fit without a problem; three would put the squeeze on the middle passenger. If you are looking for a work crew truck, then you might prefer the Sierra crew cab’s interior.

The instrument panel offers yet another intimation of the Sierra and that, too, is a fine thing. That panel has fewer analog displays, but you will find what you need. To the left is a tachometer. To the right is the speedometer. Above and between the two are gas and oil gauges.

To the left of the steering column on the lower dashboard is the control switch for 2WD/4WD driving. On the steering wheel itself — at least for upper trim level models — are cruise and audio controls. To the right and at the top of the center stack is the color display.

I have mentioned this in the past and it demands repeating — GM’s infotainment system is one of the easier ones to manage. In this case you get GMC Intellilink and the accompanying SiriusXM satellite radio, OnStar directions and connections with turn-by-turn directions and automatic crash response. Not to mention a 4G LTE hotspot, one that provides stellar Internet access from within the cabin of the truck.

Switches and knobs for the audio system and climate control are located beneath the display. In upper trim level editions, additional switches for seat heating and cooling are below that. Between the front seats is a USB connection and a 12-volt outlet. In addition, the transmission shifter, two cup holders and an armrest/storage compartment can be found.

The front seats are sufficiently supportive with four-way power adjustment for the driver. Up front you will find head, shoulder, thigh and legroom generously apportioned; taller drivers should benefit too, although pushing the seat all the way back will consume rear seating legroom.

Performance: Two Engine Choices

Under the hood, a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 200 horsepower drives the base model. Also available is a 305-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine. Both engines come paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. However, if payload, towing and performance are important to you, then only the larger engine will appeal to you. Indeed, when equipped with the Z82 trailering package you can extend the standard 3,500 pounds of towing capacity to 7,000 pounds. That larger number joins with upwards of 1,620 pounds of payload. A stout conveyance? You bet!

On the road, the test model with the larger engine performs admirably, with a long power curve and
no hesitancy detected. This truck shifts smoothly between all forward gears and delivers generous and consistent amounts of power on the highway.

Rear Bumper and Bed

One of my personal favorite design attributes of late model GM pickup trucks — Chevrolet and GMC — are the corner step bumpers that make it easier for people of a certain stature or of a certain age to access the truck bed. An “EZ” lift and lower tail gate is offered with the SLE and SLT editions, yet another move to simplify access to the truck bed.

That truck bed is 5-foot-2-inches long in the Extended Cab and is also the standard length for the Crew Cab. Besides the standard bed, crew cab models can be outfitted with a 6-foot-2-inches bed, an ideal length for hauling plywood. Furthermore, both truck beds — regardless of size — come equipped with 13 tie downs throughout the bed and can be used in conjunction with movable cargo tie-down rings. Certainly, that makes for a winning combination in trucks of any size.

Top-of-the-Line Trucks

As is a common practice among media fleet vehicles, most of the inventory Auto Trends reviews is based on top-of-the-line models. Some manufacturers serve up a variety of trim grades, but in the case of the GMC Canyon, the high-end model was it.

If you were to shop for this truck, your final price, including taxes, tags and fees, would push $40,000. But there is a reason for that — every conceivable amenity is on board, including 17-inch blade wheels, projector beam headlamps with LED daytime running lights, front fog lamps, a chrome rear bumper, front recovery hooks, a locking tailgate and power side mirrors. Inside, you get a rear window defroster, an automatic dimming rear mirror, steering wheel-mounted secondary controls, and a navigation package.

Certainly, it also helps to have a spray-on liner, automatic climate control, hill decent control and a transfer case shield. Not to mention a power lumbar driver’s seat, all-terrain tires and the Z71 off-road package. This package goes beyond the visual enhancements — chrome grille and recovery hooks — to bring in a front skid plate and tubular assist plates.

The Bottom Line

Certainly, you can order a 4×2 GMC Canyon and drive away from the dealer lot paying under $25,000. However, GMC believes that you will want many of the amenities as mentioned here, including the 4×4 system and various package enhancements. The sticker price may be daunting, but you do have some bargaining room available. You also have the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier competing, models that may also offer discounts to keep you from leaving the respective smaller truck fold.

Midsize Beast: 2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Crew Cab 4×4

January 20, 2015 by admin 13 Comments

A new generation Colorado dispels an old way of building small trucks.

Chevrolet Colorado

A red hot 2015 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab, Z71 edition.

General Motors cancelled the Chevrolet Colorado and the similar GMC Canyon following the 2012 model year, offering vague assurances that they would be back in the game some day with all-new, vastly improved models. The GM pickup duo, along with the Ford Ranger and Dodge Dakota, left a chasm in the small truck segment, one eagerly filled by the two remaining trucks: the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan’s Frontier.

Chevrolet Colorado Restoration

Well, after a two-model-year hiatus, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are back and they’re simply superior than before. What you have here is a pair of authoritative medium-sized pickup trucks, with both offering compelling alternatives to the competition. GM could have hit a two-bagger with these models and still succeeded, but they went to the fence and have brought home a pair of winning runs.

This January, GM was gracious to hand over the keys to a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado 4WD Z71 Crew Short Box model for my testing. The only model more expensive than this one is the long bed version. Still, at $34,115 and $36,710 fully equipped, the supplied Z71 pushes the pricing envelope. My test model came with four packages or options: a Bose audio system ($500), Chevrolet MyLink ($495), a spray-on bedliner ($475), and a trailering equipment package ($250).

Just for giggles, I launched the Chevrolet Colorado configurator and added $4,570 worth of options to comprise the components found in my truck, in addition to various supplementary items. These included: a tonneau cover, an exterior convenience package, a divider package, and a sliding rear window. At this point you’re staring at a truck costing $39,860. And that was before destination, taxes and tags were added.

2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Cab Sizes and Trim Levels

You mustn’t allow the lofty valuation to chase you away. Sold in extended cab and crew cab configurations, the base extended cab, long box 4×2 model is priced from $20,995. Crew cab short box models are priced from $25,205 and crew cab, long box editions retail from $26,725. Therefore, if you want a 4×4 with an acceptable amount of standard equipment, an LT edition can be had for $30,095. Chevrolet sells the Colorado in base, WT (work truck), LT and Z71 editions.

What sets the current pickup truck apart from its predecessor is, well, nearly everything. The latest rendition has a fresh face, more akin to Chevrolet’s contemporary design language. The trademark golden bow tie emblem is centered within a multi-slat horizontal grille. Available projector beam headlamps, fog lamps, a lower grille opening and hood creasing give this truck a muscular persona.

That athletic demeanor is further amplified by the Colorado’s strong shoulders, squared wheel wells, upper and lower profile characteristics, a sloping hood and a modernistic rear bumper with side steps. A collection of tire and wheel choices add to the flair. Distinctive Z71 badging on the grille and rear side panels provide emblematic touches.

The State of Small Pickup Trucks

It is a pity that no manufacturer offers a regular, two- or three-placement cab in this segment these days. Go back in time when small trucks were true compacts and that is all you got — with the occasional extended cab appended. These days, the extended cab is standard, but manufacturer advertising naturally insinuates that you want a crew cab. They’re probably right too: the extended cab only offers token rear seating and room, while the crew cab model provides room for three.

Up front is where the seating is most comfortable. Bolstered bucket seats offering very good back, hip and leg support are present. That’s not to say that the rear 60-40 folding bench seat is a penalty box, but if you’re talking about adults riding in this truck, then the back seat is tight for three, adequate for two and best used with the armrest folded down and the cup holders at the ready.

Up front, you get available heated and cooled seats, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel column, an instrument panel with four analog displays — two large tachometer and speedometer readouts and two smaller gas and oil gauges. Positioned in the middle of it all is the requisite digital driver’s information center.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel comes with cruise and auxiliary driver controls. To the left of the steering wheel and fixed to the lower part of the dashboard is the headlamp and drive mode knobs. The latter defaults to “2” for the standard rear-wheel drive. Also, there are two settings for high and low four-wheel drive. Except for the toughest conditions, you’ll probably stick with the higher 4×4 setting.

Underneath the big and brightly link touchscreen Chevrolet MyLink infotainment display are switches and knobs to access audio, media and navigation. Further below are knobs and switches for the climate control system with additional switches controlling trailering, traction control, bed lighting and hill descent. Moreover, for trucks so equipped, seat heating and cooling switches are also at hand.

At the bottom of the console is an open storage compartment, suitably sized to hold your smartphone. USB, auxiliary and 12-volt outlets are also present. Between the seats is the transmission shifter, two cup holders and yet another open storage area for a smartphone. Open the deep armrest and you will find another USB port. Although moderately confined, the storage area was sufficient for holding my camera case. At the rear of the console and facing the back seat is an additional open storage space accompanying a pair of charge-only USB ports.

Chevrolet supplies overhead storage, seat lights and illuminated visors. All four doors have storage compartments with drink holders. The truck bed has four tie-down hooks. A pair of tow hooks are up front.

Waiting on Diesel

Passionate Chevrolet fans are cognizant that a 2.8-liter turbo diesel four-cylinder engine will be offered in the Colorado, beginning in 2016. For now, the choices are a pair of gasoline engines. First, you have a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine making 200 horsepower and 191 foot-pounds of torque. Second, you can upgrade to a 3.6-liter, V-6 engine making 305 horsepower and 269 foot-pounds of torque. Both direct injection engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

For the test model, the Z71 was outfitted with the V-6 engine. That motor offers very good off the start acceleration and imbues confidence on the road. For much of the time I operated the Colorado in 4×2 mode, switching to 4×4 while traversing gravel roads and for one all-to-brief mud slough passage. There was no quagmire here: the Colorado trampled through the fen with authority — I didn’t need to shift to a lower gear to traverse the moor.

On the road, the Z71 handles much like any other large truck and that’s a marvelous thing: the Colorado behaves more like a junior Silverado with its high profile, energetic engine and assured handling. The suspension system is aided by an independent arrangement up front and by leaf springs at the rear.

Pickup Truck Quandary

Small pickup truck owners are extremely brand loyal, therefore Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier owners aren’t likely to transition to Chevrolet in significant numbers. What this truck does is augment Chevrolet’s current offerings, to apprehend previous Colorado and S10 owners, while making a play for Ford Ranger and Dodge (Ram) Dakota owners who no longer have a new model to consider.

Perhaps the most significant question any prospective Colorado owner will ask is this one: should I purchase the Colorado or make the step up to the Silverado? At least with the current models that step is a much smaller one as the two pickup trucks are more alike than they are not.

Professional Grade: 2015 GMC Sierra Denali 2500 HD

December 10, 2014 by admin 4 Comments

The ultimate in cabin comfort and 4×4 capabilities.

2015 GMC Sierra Denali 2500 4WD Crew Cab

2015 GMC Sierra Denali 2500 4WD Crew Cab

In my neighborhood people drive an assortment of vehicles, including a fair share of hybrids and EVs. There are several pickup trucks around here too with a few heavy-duty models sprinkled in.

Head just a few miles out of the metropolitan area and a dramatic shift to pickup trucks takes place. Contractors, families and outdoorsmen drive them, and with several large lakes nearby you can find them queuing at boat ramps. These particular trucks are nearly evenly split between regular duty and heavy duty models, the latter powered by turbo diesel engines offering outstanding towing capabilities.

2015 GMC Sierra Denali 2500 HD 4×4 Crew Cab

A 2015 GMC Sierra Denali 2500 4×4 Crew Cab model was a recent weekly driver, a big model with a long name. For the life of me I couldn’t ever get its name straight, simply calling it a “Sierra Denali” to anyone who asked. Those two words alone usually brought forth a familiar nod, especially from my truck friends who sometimes call them “Country Cadillacs.”

That Cadillac appellation is not too far off the market as anything with the name “Denali” attached to it reveals a chrome grille, chrome exterior cladding, and a leather interior with wood inlays. With the Cadillac Escalade ESV no longer built, the GMC Denali line is once again on top of the pickup truck heap for GM.

Any GMC truck with the 2500 or 3500 numbering sequence represents the heavy duty line for this brand especially when “HD” follows. All 1500 models are light duty and powered by one of three gasoline engines. The heavy duty credentials are backed by a standard Vortec 6.0-liter gasoline V-8 engine or an optional 6.6-liter Duramax turbo diesel engine paired with an Allison transmission.

Sierra Denali Pricing

GMC prices the Sierra Denali 2500HD from $51,390 for the 4×2 model. Choose a 4×4 and you’ll add $3,200 to the base price. To get the diesel engine, you’ll pay an extra $7,195 for one. Or, you might choose the Duramax-Plus package as found in the test model, what brings in the diesel engine, the Allison transmission, an engine block heater, an engine exhaust brake, a 3.73 rear axle and a driver alert package. Your gross vehicle weight increases by 500 pounds to an even 10,000-pound rating.

As equipped, the Sierra Denali also included a power sunroof ($995), 20-inch forged polished aluminum wheels ($850), a dual alternator — 150 amps each, 20-inch all-terrain tires ($200) and power outside camper mirrors ($55). A final price of $64,575 reflected a $1,500 discount for the Duramax-Plus package.

For the uninitiated, the “Denali” line brings in a special chrome grille with chrome clad side with additional chrome touches on the side steps, door handles and on the wheels. This model also includes a spray-on bedliner, cargo box lighter, power heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, projector beam headlamps, fog lights, LED lighting front and back, color-keyed bumpers and rear side step bumpers.

Inside, GMC provides room for three — there are a pair of bucket seats up front and a 60-40 split fold up seat in the rear. I like fold up seats as they provide an extra measure of storage space as needed. Make a big grocery run and you can line the floor with your packages.

Plush, Comfortable Cabin

Pickup truck seats, especially in high end models, are as comfortable as any I’ve found in luxury cars. Plush, supportive and highly adjustable, the driver’s seat in the Sierra Denali would be hard to beat anywhere else. The cabin is unusually quiet too as GMC engineer’s installed triple door seals, sound-absorbing materials and enhanced that with its inlaid door design. Where the front seats provide the ultimate in comfort the quiet cabin extends that luxury feel.

Truck shoppers who prefer analog displays will be happy with the Sierra Denali’s instrument panel. Two large dials for the tachometer and speedometer dominate, flanking a customizable digital driver’s information center. At the the top of the layout are four additional, but smaller analog read outs for battery power, coolant, gas and battery life. Cruise and secondary audio controls sit on top of the leather-wrapped steering wheel.

To the left of the steering wheel is the trailer brake controller, what enables you to control and monitor your trailer brakes. Beneath that is the 4WD on-dash drive controller, defaulted to two-wheel drive and easily adjustable to standard four-wheel drive and low-gear four-wheel drive, the latter for towing. With a ball joint in place you can pull up to six and one-half tons with this beefy diesel to more than 17,000 pounds with a gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitch.

At the base of the center console just below the climate controls and above the storage console are a number driver control switches, including some related to trailering. For instance, the diesel exhaust brake — when activated — provides greater control on grades and reduces brake pad wear. You’ll come across as a trailering champion by putting it in automatic mode, activating cruise control and allowing the Sierra Denali to take over. When descending a hill, the truck controls your speed and keeps it within 5 mph of your set speed. No braking on your part — the GMC does it all.

When it comes to storage compartments, the Sierra Denali has you covered. Literally. Its stand out feature is the covered center console compartment, large enough to hold hanging files and designed to do just that. While I like the room it offers, I also like the “carved out” compartment on top, designed to hold your smart phone. There is an open storage compartment in front of the center console too, offering another place to park your smart phone and then some.

The dual glove box is a great feature as well. The lower section is the traditional box; the upper section lifts up and provides a small storage area. In-door storage compartments with bottle holders, overhead storage and side front console storage are also included.

Truck Bed Access

As wonderful as the GMC’s cabin is, you wouldn’t have a pickup truck apart from a useful truck bed. GMC offers a standard 6.6-foot bed with its double cab and crew cab models. The regular cab comes with a long 8-foot bed, optional with the other cabin choices.

All models are equipped with CornerStep rear bumpers, what are essentially indentations on both sides of the bumper to provide easier access to the truck bed. Consider this a welcome feature given the height of the truck — shorter or older people are saved from the embarrassment of grabbing onto the liftgate and hauling themselves up.

The test model came with a spray-on bed liner, a feature many buyers seem to prefer. Or you might prefer to order a bed rug and a bed net, a metal bed storage box or a soft folding tonneau cover. Any conceivable option can be ordered at the factory, installed by your dealer or handled by an aftermarket provider.

On the Road

Without benefit of having anything to pull, my impressions of the Sierra Denali’s on-road manners is limited to standard driving. Step on the accelerator and this 3.5-ton beast lumbers along until you floor it to gain every foot-pound of twist that moves this truck with authority. It is rated 397 horsepower, but the 765 foot-pounds of torque is what most people will be interested in. Fortunately, the torque curve is a low one, coming in at 1,600 rpm. Suddenly, that lumbering feeling disappears as the truck is turned into an on-road brute — be careful here as you may suddenly find yourself with more forward motion power than you had realized and breaking speed limits along with it.

At highway speeds the GMC was quiet, rode comfortably and steered nearly effortlessly. It took me a while to get used to the sheer size of the truck with its camper-style mirrors. The lower section of the mirrors reveals the sides of the truck — the upper section is adjustable. Turning corners may seem awkward at first, but you’ll quickly get a handle on it and realize that this truck handles quite well. Braking is also good, benefiting from four-wheel disc brakes and a stability control system with rollover mitigation and traction control. GMC is also the only full-size truck manufacturer to offer an automatic rear locking differential, what locks both rear wheels at the same time to improve traction.

My brief trip off-road had me driving on an unpaved road for just over a mile before I came upon one of my favorite mud sloughs. Roughly the size of the truck, it provides a good testing place to determine any vehicle’s 4×4 capabilities. I had already flipped the truck into 4×4 mode before hitting the unpaved road, then gently entered the quay and slopped my way around. There was no hesitancy on the truck’s part as it navigated the bog with ease and was back on more sure footing in mere moments.

Overall Impressions

There is a certain breed of people who are attracted to a truck that matches the Sierra Denali’s capabilities and refinement. No doubt that you can easily pay at least $65,000 for a well-equipped model, rivaling the cost of a large, luxury sedan. But this GMC goes well beyond the creature comforts to deliver a true workhorse. It is that combination of ride and utility that people will consider when examining the Sierra Denali. The Duramax diesel takes this model to a much higher trailering level than the standard 6.0-liter V-8 gasoline engine, an added cost that is offset by an improved resale value.
