The Lexus RX Cleans Up

The Lexus RX comes in three trims and offers available all-wheel drive.

The Lexus RX is a midsize, luxury SUV and the only model in its segment with an available full-hybrid drivetrain. For just over two decades, the RX has set the pace in the luxury sphere, delivering cutting-edge styling, efficiency, opulence, and value. For 2020, the Lexus RX 350 features a refresh with its updated exterior styling, expanded technologies, and new safety features.

2020 Lexus RX Review

Lexus markets the 2020 RX 350 in three trims: RX ($44,150), RX F Sport ($47,950), and RXL ($47,300). The first two trims offer seating for five; the RXL seats seven. Add $1,400 for all-wheel drive and $1,025 for the destination fee. You’ll also find a hybrid variant offered in 450h ($46,800), 450h F Sport ($50,600), and 450hL ($50,510) trims. For this review, we’ll feature the gas model primarily with a few mentions of the hybrid as appropriate.

Exterior

What’s the big change with the RX’s exterior? A few notable things, including a redesigned front fascia, deeper character lines, and more distinctive headlamps and taillamps. If you liked the design before, you’ll love the new look. Conversely, if you thought the previous style was over the top, this one may send you over the edge!

The standard features list includes 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, power-adjusted and heated side mirrors, and a power rear door. Choose the F Sport model and you’ll find such embellishments as a mesh grille, rear valance, and 20-inch wheels. Various packages bring in automatic-leveling headlamps, other wheel choices, a power moonroof and aluminum roof rails, and a panoramic glass roof. You can also choose a kick opening liftgate.

Interior

We like, no scratch that, we love Lexus’ interiors. The look and feel is exquisite with lots of high-end materials in place, including synthetic or real leather, wood, and metal trim. The dashboard features multiple layers with metal trim splitting various sections. Our test model included the available bamboo steering wheel with leather-wrapped grip points and a heating element ($450). The color schemes are soothing and visually pleasant. The front seats are plush and quite comfortable. Surprisingly, heated front seats ($440) are an upgrade; heated and ventilated front seats are available too ($640).

The second-row 40/20/40 split-folding and reclining bench seat holds two with ease and three for most people when needed. The RXL model adds a third row, but we don’t see its purpose other than for short trips to the store for youngsters. The area is cramped with limited legroom. It also takes away valuable storage space. If you absolutely need room for seven, the Lexus GX is a much better choice.

Among the standard features are full power accessories, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, power front seats, and zoned climate control. The list of options, exclusive of what was already mentioned, includes manual rear side door sunshades, power cushion extenders for the driver and front passenger seats, and heated outboard second-row seats. Choose the F Sport model and this trim adds a black headliner, aluminum pedals and doorsill scuff plates, performance-style instrumentation, and special badging.

Technology

In our book, the Lexus RX scores high in most departments. Technology, however, has not been its strong suit. Fortunately, things have improved this year.

The RX is the first Lexus model to offer both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, which will soon spread across the product line. Other changes include six USB ports and a new interface with embedded apps, including Waze and Google. Apple Maps, Apple Music, and related apps are accessible with Apple devices. Further, the standard 8-inch touchscreen display is replaced by a split 12.3-inch display in some models. Bluetooth connectivity is standard.

We’re still not smitten with the scratchpad controller, however. Here, you need to learn how to manipulate the pad to access certain features, including the radio. It takes time to learn and can be quite distracting until you get there. We’re of a mind that infotainment systems should be simple and straightforward with recognizable app-like icons, touch-screen use, and voice control.

The standard audio package is a 9-speaker system or you can opt for a 12-speaker system, which is bundled with navigation ($2,285). An 835-watt, 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system is available and also comes bundled with navigation ($3,365). Another option to consider is a head-up display ($600).

Safety

Perhaps the strongest suit for this Lexus is with its safety features. This model already scores high with the IIHS and NHTSA, but it also scores with consumers.

The standard Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 features this marque’s latest driver-assist technologies. Here, Lexus bundles automatic high beams, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, stop sign assist, and adaptive cruise control. Bundled separately is blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic braking, and parking assist.

Performance

The Lexus RX 350 sits on a front-wheel-drive platform with available all-wheel drive. Thus, it doesn’t have the handling acumen of competing rear-wheel-drive models, including the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the BMW X5. On the other hand, it finds its place among such models as the Cadillac XT5.

Powering every RX is a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. Lexus pairs this engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Choose the hybrid and the same engine is present, along with an electric motor, and a battery pack. The hybrid throws down 308 horsepower at full throttle.

We found the RX offers generous step-off acceleration and ample passing power. The transmission keeps up and it doesn’t slip nor does it fumble around as it searches for the right gear.

The RX delivers a comfortable ride with most road abrasions absorbed as it powers down the road. The steering is direct and the RX acquits itself as you navigate twisty roads. Pulling out of corners is another thing as this SUV tilts and rocks, much like any other high-profile vehicle. The F Sport’s adaptive suspension system would be nice here.

Fuel efficiency is so-so for the gas model, coming in around 23 mpg combined. Choose the hybrid and it’s much more efficient, averaging about 30 mpg. What’s especially noteworthy is that the hybrid also has the power edge. If you need to tow, the RX is rated to pull up to 3,500 pounds.

Competitive Set

Besides the models already mentioned, the Lexus RX competes with the Acura MDX, Infiniti QX60, Audi Q7, Jaguar F-Pace, and the Volvo XC90. The price range for most competing models starts in the low-to-mid 40s and pushes near or above $60,000.

Our Recommendation

Stick with the base model, then add the packages you want to customize your vehicle. The F Sport has unique styling features and the adaptive suspension system, but it doesn’t add a performance upgrade. We’re still intrigued by the hybrid, which carries a $2,650 price differential over the comparably equipped gas model. Make it your choice if you have long-term ownership in mind.

Should I Buy a Lexus NX or a Lexus RX?

Decisions, decisions. That’s the challenge new vehicle shoppers face when considering one of more than 400 models available to them these days. However, that search becomes much easier when you narrow the field to a particular brand, such as Lexus, which is the luxury marque for Toyota Motors.

Even so, you may find yourself stumped when comparing utility vehicles, as Lexus offers five models plus three hybrid variants. If you’re looking for a five-passenger model, you’ve immediately narrowed your search to three: the Lexus UX 200, NX 300, and the RX 350, although the latter does have available third-row seats, pushing your capacity to seven individuals.

That said, if you want comfortable room for five, then you’ll want to eliminate the small UX and concentrate on the NX and RX, the latter without the third-row package. There are some important differences between the two, but both do move five people in cosseted luxury.

The following are important points about Lexus NX and RX:

1. New features for 2020.

The Lexus NX benefits from a marginally expanded driver-assist safety features list. As for the RX, the changes are much more robust in keeping with its mid-cycle upgrade. Indeed, the 2020 RX has new front and rear fascia, updated suspension hardware, and updated tech.

2. Comparable storage space.

We see this a lot: storage space that’s nearly the same between different-sized models. The reason? To add more passenger space in the larger model to set them apart. Indeed, the closeness is quite apparent: 17.7 cubic feet for the NX and 18.4 cubic feet for the RX. With the second-row seat folded, the separation is a bit more apparent 54..6 versus 57.6 cubic feet. In effect, both models offer decent storage capacity, especially behind the first row.

3. Laudable tech features.

Both models feature an 8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility. HD Radio, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are included with the RX. You’ll find six USB ports in the RX, while the NX has just one port. The NX has an 8-speaker audio system; the RX comes with 9 speakers. NX options include a 10.3-inch screen, navigation, and 10- and 14-speaker audio systems. The RX has an available 12.3-inch screen, navigation, and 12- and 15-speaker audio packages. Both models rely on the Lexus Remote touch interface, which has a steep learning curve.

4. Diverging performance methods.

The Lexus RX is 10 inches longer and 300 pounds heavier than the NX, with the added weight due in part to its larger engine displacing 3.5 liters. This V6 produces 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the NX makes 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Both engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission. We’ve driven both models and can say the NX is just as fast as the RX in all things passing. Lexus may use diverging ways to deliver power with the two models, but they get it done.

5. Choose your F Sport.

Both models offer an F Sport variant, which includes trim enhancements, such as mesh grilles, a black headliner, leather touches, and aluminum pedals. You’ll also get a sport-tuned suspension, giving this model a handling advantage over the base trim.

6. Safety is their concern.

Credit Lexus with not shying away from including a long list of standard safety features. The NX received the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ plus award, while the RX earned a five-star rating from the NHTSA. Both models come with a roster of safety equipment, including pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition. The RX adds forward collision warning and forward automatic emergency braking, with the latter an upgrade on the NX.

7. NuLuxe or real leather.

Both models offer standard NuLuxe fabric, which is a worthwhile alternative to real leather. For those of you who despise the thought of sacrificing animals for your comfort, your comfort isn’t sacrificed with imitation leather, at least not in Lexus. It has the look and feel of the real thing, which should please most buyers.

Lexus NX or RX: Your Choice

Lexus charges from $36,720 for the NX and $44,150 for the RX. That’s about a $7,500 difference between the two. All-wheel drive is a $1,400 upgrade with either model and should be considered by anyone living in a snowy climate.

All in all, Lexus has two strong competitors in the NX and RX. Besides F Sport models, both have hybrid variants. We didn’t cover those models here, but each one may be worth a look, especially if fuel efficiency is a priority for you.

About the Refreshed 2020 Lexus RX

Ever since its 1999 model year introduction, the Lexus RX has played a significant role in the luxury utility vehicle segment. In fact, it was a groundbreaking vehicle, as it brought the first luxury crossover SUV to the market.

Since then, the RX has evolved significantly, as Lexus increased its size, rolled out a hybrid variant, and eventually added a third-row option. The current model is now in its fourth generation and for 2020 it receives a mid-product-cycle upgrade, featuring styling changes and both tech and safety updates.

The 2020 Lexus RX includes this F Sport model.

2020 Lexus RX Overview

The 2020 Lexus RX is a midsize crossover utility vehicle with room for five or seven. We’re not smitten with the third row (RXL) as evidenced by our review of the 2019 model. Nevertheless, that option may come in handy with families with small children. Otherwise, the Lexus GX is better suited for large families.

All models come with a 3.5-liter V6 engine. The gas model offers standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive, and has an 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid models come with standard all-wheel drive and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The following are the key updates with the 2020 Lexus RX and RXL:

1. Updated front and rear fascias. The 2020 RX receives updates to its front and rear ends. The front fascia has a slightly more relaxed, yet elegant look with slimmer headlamps and tweaked grille angles. From the rear, the fascia offers lights with an “L” design. Furthermore, all edges are sharpened and accentuated. Lastly, the liftgate’s available kick sensor now opens and closes faster.

2. New colors and wheels. Lexus adds a pair of new colors to the 2020 RX — Moonbeam Beige Metallic and Nori Green Pearl, the latter already available on the tiny Lexus UX crossover. A pair of new 18- and 20-inch wheel designs also roll out.

3. Expanded technologies, including smartphone compatibility. If there’s been a weak point with Lexus, smartphone compatibility is it. The company’s slow entry into the market comes as it takes pains to protect proprietary systems it doesn’t want tech companies to access. We recently saw Apple CarPlay added to the product line and for 2020 the RX becomes the first Lexus model with Google’s Android Auto. Other tech changes include an updated interface with embedded apps such as Google Maps and Waze. Apple Maps, Apple Music, and related apps are accessible with Apple devices. The standard 8-inch touchscreen display gives way to an available 12.3-inch display in some models.

The F Sport model offers unique interior detailing, including seat trim.

4. More standard safety features. For 2020, the marque makes the Lexus Safety System+ standard. This system now includes daytime bicyclist detection and low-light pedestrian detection. Both are part of an improved Pre-Collision System. You’ll also find road sign assist and lane tracing assist.

5. Enhanced driving dynamics. To further solidify the RX’s place in the market, Lexus updated this model’s driving dynamics for 2020 to include lighter (hollow) front and rear stabilizer bars to not just reduce weight but to reduce body roll and improve steering response. Also, retuned shock absorbers, updated dampers, and a stiffer suspension system thwarts understeering and improves vehicle handling.

6. Additional F Sport Access. Lexus’ F Sport line brings trim and suspension changes to each model. Indeed, for 2020, Lexus offers not one, but two F Sport packages. An enhanced RX F Sport package brings in elements from the LC sports car, including an active variable suspension system that’s more responsive than before. The package also includes a cold air intake, active sound control, electric power steering, and a heated steering wheel. As for the standard F Sport package, it now includes new front and rear performance dampers, and drive mode select with Sport+ and customer drive modes.

Hybrid Variants Too

Lexus will continue to offer hybrid RX 450h and RX 450hL variants. Production of the 2020 model begins in the third quarter with its on-sale arrival this fall.

In all, the refreshed 2020 Lexus RX does everything it must do to stay competitive in a segment that includes such models as the Cadillac XT5, Acura MDX, Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, and the Infiniti QX60. We think the expanded technologies will help attract customers to this model.

Introducing the All-New 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV

If patience is a virtue, then I exceed in virtuosity. At least when it comes to reviewing a Mercedes-Benz vehicle.

Eight years after my first-ever review, I finally had the opportunity to evaluate a Mercedes model other than one briefly encountered at a press rally (See: — First Look: 2018 Mercedes-Benz C 350e PHEV). That’s because my distributor now carries the brand, supplying journalists who are located throughout the southeastern United States.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE Overview

A 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE was my test vehicle and it was delivered to me in 350 4MATIC guise. Mercedes prices this midsize SUV from $53,700 (RWD). You’ll also find 350 4MATIC ($56,200) and 450 4MATIC ($61,150) models. AMG and GLE Coupe versions are marketed separately.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of building a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, then you might not realize package and individual options are how each model is built. You won’t find trims, but you can add features to customize accordingly.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE

For example, models dressed in a Black or Polar White patina incur no additional cost. Beyond that, you’ll find multiple color options at a cost, ranging from $720 to $1,515. You’ll also find three standard wheel choices and multiple wheel options, costing from $500 to $1,750. Notably, some of these choices are bundled in packages, such as the AMG Line Exterior Package ($2,900) or the AMG Line w/ Night Package ($3,200). A panoramic roof ($1,000) and illuminated running boards ($650) are available separately.

Interior upgrades include an AMG Line Interior Package ($400) and a 3rd-row Seat Package ($2,100). You’ll also find upholstery upgrades — $1,620 or $2,990 — and wood trim ($160). A heated steering wheel ($250), Nappa leather dash and door trim ($700), and an Acoustic Comfort Package ($1,100) are also available.

Under the Entertainment & Convenience grouping, you’ll find multiple package options. These include a Premium Package ($1,850), Warmth & Comfort Package ($1,050), MBUX Technology Package ($1,050), and an ENERGIZING Package Plus ($2,100). With these you’ll find such features as a Burmeister surround sound audio system, heated front armrests and upper door handles, a head-up display, and multi-contour front seats with massage and ventilation. Some of the features available within each package are also optioned individually.

Are we done with the packages, yet? Not a chance! Indeed, you’ll find under the Performance & Safety umbrella additional package options, including a Driver Assistance Package PLUS ($2,250), Advanced Lighting Package ($900), and an AIRMATIC Suspension Package ($1,710). Lastly, but certainly not least, you’ll find multiple maintenance, connected services, and concierge packages.

Mercedes makes it easy to add what you want. Keep in mind that your cost can surge significantly if you don’t pay attention. Definitely, your out-the-door price will push past $60,000 and may top $80,000 with the GLC 450 4MATIC.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE

A Matter of Style

Mercedes-Benz styling is both timeless and cutting-edge. This seems like a contradiction and I suppose it is. The company’s tristar emblem is its calling card, an unmistakable feature found on its grille, liftgate or trunk, and inside the vehicle.

As for the 2020 GLE, it delivers a modern, fluidic design that’s unified and not overwrought. The front fascia features a gaping grille with wing-like horizontal slats pushing out from the emblem. An even wider, lower grille opening and LED-accented headlights add a sporty flair. From the sides, you’ll find a gently rising beltline, a slightly falling roofline, blacked out B pillars and roof windows, and generously apportioned wheel arches. At the rear, the GLE has wraparound tail lamps with LED accent lights, dual exhaust tips, a roof spoiler, and dual exhaust tips. Underbody cladding completes the front and rear fascias.

The list of standard exterior features include LED accent lights, sport wheels, a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, power liftgate, power-folding side mirrors, and keyless entry. We already mentioned that patina and wheel upgrades are available. You can also opt for an illuminated star ($500), black side cladding ($450), and AMG trim.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV Inside, the GLE offers a stunning cabin, rich in choice materials, design execution, and fit and finish. It’s a masterful stroke, one we fully expect Mercedes to accomplish without disappointment. Among the many highlights are a blended instrument panel and center display, creating perhaps the largest panel in the industry. Between the seats are dual grab bars with ample open storage space at the base of the stack. And it isn’t a stack in the traditional sense, as the cabin layout is horizontally oriented, not vertical.

Most controls are sensibly placed, although it does take getting used to the location of the transmission shifter. It is found on the right side of the steering column and can be mistaken for the windshield wiper controller (found on the opposite side). It is the thinnest of all shifters I’ve ever seen, but it gets the job done, freeing up space between the seats for the infotainment controller.

The standard imitation leather seats are pretty, but the available leather interior supplies more comfort and an improved look. Wood trim and awe-inspiring ambient lighting supply panache and elegance. The symmetry is outstanding and takes nothing away from what is also apparent: very comfortable seats are in place, front and back.

This year, Mercedes offers a three-row option, which is similar to the Lexus RX we drove the same week. The Mercedes is about seven inches longer between the wheels than the Lexus, so seating in the last row should be an improvement over the Lexus. That said, if you need the extra passenger capacity, we think looking at the larger GLS will serve you best.

In addition to the features mentioned, the list of standard features include push-button start, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, zoned climate control, black imitation leather seats, and wood trim. The options list includes brushed aluminum pedals, sport front seats, a power second-row seat, and a wood and leather steering wheel.

Is there ever a sub-par Mercedes audio system? I doubt one exists. Indeed, whether you choose the available Burmeister system or not, you’re treated to an audio package that’s big on sound clarity and music enjoyment.

The standard package bundles many features, including navigation. Mercedes also supplies a voice-controlled interface, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone compatibility, and five USB charging ports. All models come with dual 12.3-inch screens for the instrument panel and multimedia center. They’re pulled together and covered in glass, and are highly functional.

On the safety front, you’ll find such standard features as blind spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include lane change and lane keep assist, evasive steering assist, distance control, and a host of other safety features. You can also opt for a surround view monitor ($400) to expand visibility.

On the Road

The 2020 GLE comes with two engine choices. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower and 273 foot-pounds of torque powered my GLE 350. Here, you have a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive (there is no low-speed transfer case, so it isn’t four-wheel drive). A 9-speed automatic transmission is standard across the model line. My test model was the GLE 350 4MATIC.

The second choice is exclusive to the GLE 450 4MATIC. Here, you’ll find a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine with 362 horsepower and 369 foot-pounds of torque. This powertrain includes a 48-volt electrical system, which delivers an additional 21 foot pounds of torque boost when cruising on the highway.

As for the test model, we give it high marks for its quiet, yet capable engine. It supplies ample step-off power and generous passing competence with the 9-speed automatic transmission furnishing quick shifts without drama.

This SUV grips the road and stays planted with only minimal body roll detected on twisty pavement. The ride is firm, yet comfortable and if you want to take it off road, you can. No, you won’t want to engage in aggressive off-roading, but you should feel comfortable on gravelly roads and worn paths. Leave the tough work to the Mercedes-Benz G550 if terrain romping is your thing.

Auto Trends Recommends

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE raises the bar in a very competitive segment. It makes the best-selling Lexus RX seem aged in comparison. The available inline-six delivers copious amounts of power and should be explored by anyone who places a value on performance. This model also comes with the 48-volt electrical system, which eventually will find its way into most new vehicles. That the system adds a measure of boost at cruising speed, is a plus.

We think most shoppers will be satisfied with the standard engine. Choose all-wheel drive if you live in a snowy climate or prefer improved handling on wet roads. There are lots of packages to consider. Likely, your final price will push past $65,000, especially if you opt for special paint, wheels, interior and safety upgrades.

All in all, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 underscores where this company is headed with its SUVs. The GLS will soon follow, building on the success of the GLE. We expect a plug-in hybrid GLE variant to roll out next year with a reported 62-mile range.

Lexus RX: Style, Luxury & Advanced Safety Features

The 2019 Lexus RX 350L offers standard seating seven or available space for six.

The 2019 Lexus RX 350 returns mostly unchanged, except for the newly added Lexus Enform Connect smartphone app integration. The current version of this SUV rolled out in 2016, launching this model’s fourth generation.

There is a reason why the RX remains a top seller in the midsize luxury SUV segment: it has the quality, reliability, technology and safety features customers want. It is also available in two- and three-row configurations, the latter adding an “L” to its name. That “L” doesn’t mean a longer wheelbase, however, they are the same as non-L models.

2019 Lexus RX Overview

Lexus offers the 2019 RX in three trims: RX 350 ($43,670), RX 350 F Sport ($49,320), and RX 350L ($47,870). Add $1,025 for the destination charge and another $1,400 for all-wheel drive. A hybrid variant, the 450h, is marketed separately.

As with most any Lexus model, you’ll find a host of packages available. The standard model offers six, including a Premium Package ($1,100, upgraded wood trim, a rear armrest storage compartment, leather interior trim, power outside mirrors, and a power moonroof).

A Luxury Package ($4,235) builds on the base package, adding 20-inch designer alloy wheels, illuminated front door sills, a heated wood-and-leather steering wheel, upgraded leather, and power seat extenders for the front seats.

You’ll also find a Navigation Package ($2,145) and a Navigation and Mark Levinson Premium Audio Package ($3,225) available. A pair of minor Cold Weather ($315) and Towing Prep ($265) Packages round out the offerings. The other trims have similar packages with some variations in content and cost.

A Matter of Style

The look of Lexus is something you either like or hate, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We’ve seen Lexus’ styling evolve in recent years from the evocative to the provocative. No longer can it be said that Lexus styling is uninspiring.

The RX’s front fascia is dominated by a spindle grille with LED accent lighting supplying flair and distinction. The deep cutouts at the lower corners along with the pronounced body sculpting of the hood raise the sporty quotient considerably. The drama continues along its sides, most noticeably with the floating roof design. From the rear, the tail lamps amplify that fascia with LED accent lights. Lots of chrome trim supplies elegant ornamentation.

Inside, the RX’s cabin offers a profound statement of Lexus style, elegance, and quality. The cabin is beautiful, serene and roomy — at least for five adults. The available third-row seat, however, is too small to house adults and barely useable by children. They’re okay for short trips, but if you’re shopping for a seven-passenger model, the full-size GX is where you want to shop. You might also consider the available six-passenger seating as this arrangement swaps out the middle bench seat for a pair of captain’s chairs. With this layout, access to the third row is easier and rear passengers have a bit more maneuverability available.

Lexus puts a lot into the RX’s dashboard, developing a multi-layered design with chrome accents and a color that contrasts with the roof pillars. The center stack tilts toward the driver and is itself wrapped in chrome. The color display sits on top of the dash with no direct connection to the stack. There is a certain fluidity apparent as the lines cross and intersect — it isn’t overwrought, but it is visually appealing.

As for the rest of the cabin, every seat is plush and supportive. Deep door pockets, thickly padded armrests, and available ambient lighting are welcome touches. The RX is all-day comfortable and all-the-time quiet.

Safety & Technology

We expect Lexus to lead in all things safety and the RX does not disappoint. All models have the Lexus Safety System+ bundle, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane departure alert with lane keep assist. These are the kinds of features we’re seeing offered in both mainstream and luxury models. Most manufacturers charge extra, however.

Lexus also offers individual options, including blind spot monitoring, parking assist, automatic braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. A head-up display is also available. Fully optioned, the Lexus RX delivers all the driver-assist features we expect.

As for non-safety technologies, the RX comes with an 8-inch color display, Bluetooth connectivity, a 12-speaker audio system, and the Lexus Enform app suite. What’s missing is smartphone compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lexus is behind here, not offering smartphone access we’re seeing nearly everywhere else. That’s beginning to change, but not fast enough for some consumers.

When it comes to upgrades, Lexus fans will be delighted to find an available 12.3-inch color display. The split-screen layout is crisp and concise, one of the best we’ve seen anywhere. Lexus bundles this screen with its navigation system. Also available is a 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio package, which delivers exquisite sound definition and distribution.

On the Road

Let’s hear it for V6 power! Every Lexus RX has a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 295 horsepower and 267 foot-pounds of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to the wheels.

The V6 is a common engine in many of Toyota’s larger models, including the Highlander, Camry, Avalon, Sienna, and Tacoma, although there is some difference in power, depending on the vehicle. The Lexus models with this engine include the IS, ES, and GS. Its a proven engine with ample upfront and passing power. Indeed, this V6 moves away from a dead stop with confidence and moves this SUV on the open road with authority. Even under full loads, you can expect the powertrain to keep up as the transmission switches cogs with precision.

Models outfitted with all-wheel drive possess an important advantage over the standard front-wheel-drive RX: up to 50 percent of the power shifts to the rear wheels under certain circumstances. Models equipped with the F Sport have no power advantage, but the exhaust chatter is louder and directed into the cabin. Still, this is one of the quietest models of its kind, matching the smooth driving you’d expect from Lexus.

If you prefer a more spirited drive and feel, the drive mode selector offers normal, eco and sport modes. Choose the F Sport and two more modes come in: Custom and Sport+. No, you won’t mistake this SUV for a performance model, but it is hardly a weakling at that.

For owners with a need to tow, the RX has a 3,500-pound tow rating when equipped with the optional tow package. On the other hand, the competing Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class with the available turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine delivers up to 7,700 pounds of towing capacity. Buyers should also compare these models to the Jaguar F-PACE, BMW X5, Cadillac XT5, Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, Infiniti QX60, and the Acura MDX.

Auto Trends Recommends

Inasmuch as seven seats may seem appealing and the available six-seat arrangement the better option in a three-row layout, it is difficult for us to recommend any RX-L model. As for the standard Lexus RX, that’s where you want to search as it offers the best combination of passenger room and cargo capacity. As mentioned earlier, if you need more passenger carrying capacity, then the Lexus GX is where you should be looking.

Some may find the RX’s exterior too busy for their tastes, while others will simply overlook the enormous grille, deep cutlines, and the floating roof. The cabin is definitely this model’s strong suit, as it offers an attractive style, exquisite materials, and matchless fit and finish. If you’re not beholden to an SUV, then the Lexus ES sedan is also worth a look, a model imbued with an outstanding interior and a premium ride.

7 Headliners at the 2015 New York Auto Show

The 2015 edition of the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) begins this week, with the public show running from April 3 through 12. This writer is on his way to the Big Apple to attend dozens of news conferences and related events, and will share his findings here as well through Twitter (@theautowriter) and Facebook.

The New York show promises to have its fair share of hoopla to conclude the North American portion of the auto show circuit for the season. To that end, Auto Trends has identified seven headliners that will most likely be major newsmakers this week.

1. Cadillac CT6 Unveiled

Over the past few years, Cadillac has teased us with a pair of concepts — Ciel and Elmiraj — that have strongly hinted at the direction GM’s luxury brand might take. Long rumored that a six-figure, range-topping model was in the mix, confirmation of same only came last year.

The all-new Cadillac CT6 is *the* news story of the 2015 NYIAS. It is a five-passenger rear- or all-wheel drive model, designed specifically to do battle with the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and the Lexus LS. Built on an all-new Omega platform, it will be the most advanced model to come from GM, replete with leading-edge technologies and new or updated engines.

2. Scion is Back

Never did this writer think that Scion would be a news story again. Scion, introduced for the 2004 model year, is a Toyota sub-brand aimed at young, first-time buyers. The brand got off to a strong start, but within six years, it faded and has largely become irrelevant. Indeed, a few years back Toyota Motors gave Toyota dealers an option to not sell Scion vehicles. That’s a sure sign your marque is doomed.

Well, Scion is not doomed, at least not in the short term. New York will feature a pair of new models, including a subcompact IA hatchback based on the Mazda2 and a compact IM sedan. These two models plus the FR-S coupe may very well rescue Scion from oblivion.

3. Chevrolet Malibu is Now Relevant

The latest generation Chevrolet Malibu has struggled in an unforgiving segment and after three years, including a rushed second-year refresh, a new model debuts. GM simply could not wait the usual six years to turn this model over and will present a longer and more stylish Malibu in New York.

We have been told that the current model’s biggest problem will be resolved. Specifically, the wheelbase will be stretched by four inches to better accommodate rear-seating passengers. Furthermore, a legitimate hybrid contender will roll out in spring 2016, a full-on hybrid that taps Chevrolet Volt technologies.

4. Lexus RX and Closely-Held Secrets

The best-selling midsize luxury utility vehicle is the Lexus RX. A new model will debut in New York, but not much is known about it. Lexus is determined to maintain its leadership in a segment where Mercedes-Benz, Acura, BMW, Infiniti and Audi are fighting back. Further, an all-new Lincoln MKX is also being readied.

Some content that Lexus has played it safe with the RX and needs to make a bold statement with the new model. We have heard about new powertrains and technologies, but until the cover drops in New York, we really cannot say what those changes will be.

5. Nissan Maxima Already Revealed

Full-size sedans are not what they used to be. Certainly, if customers are shopping for cars, they are more likely to go with a midsize offering. Without doubt, the Nissan Altima has been a strong seller, while the brand’s flagship Maxima is long in the tooth and nearly forgotten.

Well, Nissan hasn’t given up on the Maxima and has been showing us a concept that points to this sedan’s styling direction. Moreover, the sedan’s final look has been shown since the Super Bowl, thus the New York unveil will be rather anticlimactic. However, a few things about the 2016 edition remain unanswered. Will a new engine be offered? Is all-wheel drive an option?

6. Jaguar XF Goes to Flatiron

The Jaguar XF has already been seen, thanks to a cleverly arranged water crossing in London last week. The second generation of this midsize, luxury saloon comes in longer, but lighter than the original. That’s a trend competing models have also been embracing.

Although the Jaguar XF will have its official news conference at the auto show, this model will also be on display in the city’s Flatiron district (23rd and Broadway) on Tuesday, beginning at 11 a.m. As for all the technical specification details, you’ll have to wait until April 1 for that news.

7. New Hyundai Tucson Debuts

Okay, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson was already revealed in Geneva. Further, photos of the North American spec model have been out since February. So, there is not much more to say about this model, at least for right now.
What will be interesting to watch is how well the new Tucson will compete in a segment dominated by the Honda CR-Z, itself all-new for 2016. Moreover, Toyota will debut a RAV4 Hybrid, what should coincide with a major mid cycle refresh for this compact SUV.

New York, New York

Yes, there will be many other news stories in New York, including a handful of surprises. Mitsubishi will show us a new Outlander, Kia will reveal a refreshed Optima and the Aston Martin Vulcan will make its US debut. For this purpose, Auto Trends will share those findings throughout the week.

Fabulously Unfrozen: February 2015 US Auto Sales

The eastern half of the nation has had quite a winter, with record cold, significant snows and paralyzing ice storms extending deep into the south. Despite the difficult conditions, consumers visited US showrooms in strong numbers, helping to propel February 2015 auto sales in a positive direction.

Neither treacherous winter conditions, nor rising fuel prices kept consumers from US auto dealer showrooms in February. However, earlier rosy sales projections did not pan out quite the way analysts had hoped as manufacturer sales were tempered almost across the board. Notwithstanding the projections, Toyota Motor Sales notched a 13.3 percent increase in the month on the strength of robust light truck and Lexus sales.

The Detroit Three

Meanwhile, the Ford Motor Company posted a 2 percent decline for the month, even as demand for the F-150 pickup truck, the new Transit van and the Ford Mustang remained strong. Sales for its car lines and utilities were spotty, contributing to the brand’s decline. Lincoln sales tumbled by 7.5 percent, nearly erasing January’s gains.

General Motors enjoyed brisk truck sales with deliveries increasing by 36 percent year over year. GM sales rose by 4.2 percent based on strong demand for GMC products and positive action for Chevrolet. Buick and Cadillac, however, experienced losses with the latter falling by 12.6 percent for the month.

It is now 59 consecutive months whereby Fiat Chrysler (FCA) has been experiencing year-over-year sales gains. February’s rise narrowed to 6 percent with the Jeep brand up by 21 percent and the Chrysler brand up by 13 percent. The Ram brand climbed by 12 percent, but both the Fiat and Dodge brands saw sales pull back.

“In spite of snow and bitter cold that slowed auto sales in many regions of the country, FCA US still turned in a 6 percent sales increase and extended our year-over-year sales streak to 59-consecutive months,” said Reid Bigland, Head of U.S. Sales. “Even with tougher year-over-year sales comparisons in 2015, our vehicle lineup continues to produce record sales results.”

The Japan Top Three

Toyota Motor Sales enjoyed a double-digit increase as Camry, Corolla and RAV4 continued to pace the Toyota brand. Scion sub-brand sales, however fell by 14.7 percent as total Toyota brand sales increased by 7.9 percent for the month. The Lexus marque enjoyed robust demand for its RX crossover, GS sedan and for its all-new compact NX crossover model.

American Honda said that its sales rose by 5 percent in February on the strength of a 4.1 percent increase for the Honda brand and a 12.5 percent increase for the Acura emblem. Strong demand for the subcompact Fit, the usual strong interest in the compact CR-V crossover and robust truck sales paced the Honda brand. Acura benefited from a strong interest in its RDX and MDX utility vehicles.

The Nissan Group reported a 2.7 percent sales expansion for February on the strength of hearty interest in its Infiniti marque. Indeed, Infiniti car sales were especially vigorous, rising by 25.1 percent, including a 77.2 percent increase for the Q40. Nissan brand sales rose by 1.1 percent, due largely to a 24.4 percent increase in Nissan Sentra sales for the month.

Hyundai and Kia Report

Hyundai Motor America has had its share of struggles lately, trailing the gains enjoyed by the market leaders and losing market share. However, last month the Korean automaker had its best month ever etas sales rose by 7 percent. The Sonata sedan, Santa Fe crossover and Genesis luxury sedan were key contributors for the month.

“Even the treacherous weather across the country couldn’t keep shoppers away from dealerships in February,” said Bob Pradzinski, vice president, national sales for Hyundai. “With consumer spending and confidence continuing to grow at the fastest pace in years, customers bought Hyundais in record numbers, giving us the best February in our history.”

Kia reported sales of 44,030 units last month, up 6.8 percent over last Feb. The Kia Optima (midsize sedan), Soul (utility vehicle) and Sorento (crossover) continue to pace the market. Sales for its Sedona minivan gained fivefold for the month.

Hyundai Genesis

Sales for the Hyundai Genesis sedan rose sharply in February.

Volkswagen and Subaru Report

Volkswagen brand sales fell for the month, continuing a trend that has dogged this German manufacturer for the past few years. Feb. sales fell by nearly 5.2 percent. However, the subcompact Golf line continues to show much promise as sales surged by 141 percent for the month. The new Golf R was a big contributor as well as the Golf EV.

Subaru continued with its stampede, enjoying brisk sales on 41,358 vehicles sold or up 18.5 percent. All models except the BRZ saw an increase for the month. The Legacy midsize sedan realized an increase of 68 percent for the month and Outback sales were up by nearly 30 percent.

The Luxury Market Remains Strong

Continued strong interest in the luxury brands helped fuel sales for Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Audi sales rose for the 50th consecutive month, increasing by 5.3 percent based largely on sales of its new A3 sedan. The BMW marque’s sales rose by 14.5 percent as interest in its X5 crossover and 2 and 4 Series lines propelled sales. Mercedes-Benz reported its best Feb. ever as sales rose by 4.5 percent. Potent interest in its CLA- and C-Class models helped Mercedes. Porsche sales edged lower by 0.9 percent for the month.

Elsewhere, Mazda sales rose by 5.4 percent, Volvo sales increased by 0.5 percent, and Jaguar Land Rover sales increased by 13.8 percent. Mitsubishi sales rose by 26 percent for the highest gain by any manufacturer for the month.

To sum up, US sales roses by 5.3 percent in a month beset by bad weather. Motor Intelligence (Autodata Corp.) reported 1,257,619 models sold; year-to-date sales are up 9.2 percent.
